Behold, friends - the very epitome of human achievement: the Ethel Merman Disco Album!

With Cher and Streisand having blazed the trail, it was only a matter of time before Merman was called upon to belt out disco versions of her classic tunes. And yes - it's sounds EXACTLY as you might imagine.

Now I can die a complete and happy man.

Fearless wretch, insanity.

He watches lurking beneath the sea.

Okay, I know what you're thinking. Is this real? Well, it's real in the sense that it is a physical object. But no, it's not a real Merman, it's just a bunch of parts of animals and fish sewed together. It's located in the building where they keep the alligators for the winter at the Alligator Farm in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Supposedly, they've been offered big bucks for it from Ripley's, but chooses not to sell. These things are considered good luck in Japan, and other parts of the orient and Pacific Isles. How the Alligator Farm got one I'm not sure. But I can say the thing has been there since I was a little kid.

Around the west door arch at Loches are many weird and wonderful carvings - here an acrobat, a beast-head with two people emerging from its ears, and a merman.

Friday, July 25, 2008 - Emmanuel picked me up at the train station in Génolhac, a village in the Northern Cévennes, and we drove to the idyllic hamlet of Chalap. We met up with Eric, Sunil, and Marie, and drove to the "faille" - a gorge with a river running through it. After climbing down a steep mountain, we went swimming in the Cèze and reclined on the hot hot rocks. /

He really is beautiful I love his tail.
