This is how the Merlot looked when we first got here before the new trellis system and pruning techniques.

From Nicolas in Paris, but had this in a restaurant the previous trip.

This LOOKS like a lot of sediment settled out of the wine. However I think this was precipitated out by the chemicals I added last night and fell out rapidly so it's probably spun out to the outside wall of the carboy whilst the wine as still spinning from the 'vigorous stirring' I gave it. In other words I don't think there's really 2 solid inches of sediment in the bottom of this carboy.
