It's all very serious, usually ordering a meal brings some joy & excitement to the table.
The proof will be in the pudding.
To many older generations of Leeds residents (Loiners) the name of Schofield's will be recalled as being that of probably the 'best; department store in the city. Formed in 1901 by Snowden Schofield as a drapers and millners the store grew to comprise of a number of units around the Victoria Arcade on what was to become The Headrow. In 1962 the company, still family run, reconstructed their premises as a modern store and they continued to operate until the 1980s. At that time the building was sold to a property company and developer and the store itself passed unto the ownership of the House of Fraser. In the 1990s the building was reconstructed to form the Schofield Centre, let out to other tenants, and the House of Fraser closed their branch here to concentrate on other outlets in Leeds city centre and so the store and name passed into history.
This Menu Card from the store's café is not dated but has a feel of wartime or post-war austerity about it given the mention of margarine as substitute for butter, the use of synthetic cream and the somewhat limited fare.

British Railways had a network of named trains for many years, usually main line 'expresses', and these services often had extensive catering and restaurant services. For these services BT's catering services frequently commissioned artwork for menu and wine list covers as can be seen here for "The Mancunian". This service between Manchester London Road (prior to its renaming as Manchester Piccadilly) and London Euston originated in 1927, the days of the London Midland & Scottish Railway prior to nationalisation in post-war years, and as the text explains the title was conferred upon the 9.35am departure and 5.30pm return. At the date of this list, 1961, electrification of the West Coast Main Line between London and Manchester/Liverpool was in full swing and so timings had been slackened to allow for engineering works.
The luncheon menu shows the same vessel that is used on the wine list cover. The ship is seen against the backdrop of mercantile architecture and that hints at the Manchester Ship Canal and possibly the CWS's ship "The Pioneer" that was the first ship to unload cargo at the new Port of Manchester in 1894 and indeed the first vessel to be registered as being of that port. Annoyingly no artist or designer is shown but it has the feel of Eric Fraser who certainly did design such items for BR and BT Catering at this time.
The old British Transport Commission (that existed from 1948 until 1962) - and of which British Transport Catering was a subsidiary - had very high standards of graphic design and typography as this menu card, that shares part of the design of the complimentary wine list cover. I suspect that the artwork is by Eric Fraser (although it is unusual for them not to show "EF" I will admit) as he undertook others in this series of 'named train' cards. The design is based around the mythical 'Liver Bird".
The "Merseyside Express" not surpringly ran between London Euston and Liverpool and is the shortened name for the "London - Merseyside Express" that had been introduced by the pre-nationalisation London Midland & Scottish Railway in 1927 although an earlier version, the name conferred on the 1730 ex-Euston, was introduced by the LNWR in 1905.
Dinner - quite an event - was priced at 15/6d and that has risen as an early menu card for this service shows it priced at 12/-!
Kansas City-based Glace (say it this way, “Gla-say”) Artisan Ice Cream is a more grown-up sweet treat expression, rich in texture and inventive flavors like Venezuelan dark chocolate, fleur de sel caramel and pineapple-cilantro sorbet. The corresponding brand expression is clean, sophisticated and a nod to the owner’s love of modern minimalism. At the same time, copy and color palette make it feel fun and approachable. The logo also incorporates a sly tie to ice cream with circles that look like melting “drips” hitting the floor, while tailored graphic elements make the identity feel fashionable and unexpected in the category.

British Railways had a network of named trains for many years, usually main line 'expresses', and these services often had extensive catering and restaurant services. For these services BT's catering services frequently commissioned artwork for menu and wine list covers as can be seen here for "The Red Rose" express.
"The Red Rose" that, as the back cover of the wine list explains, was the name of one of the two named express trains that ran between London Euston and Liverpool Lime Street station in the 1950s and '60s. This dinner menu, priced 15/6d, was served in the restuarant car.
The design of the 'red rose', that symbolises the County of Lancashire, is by 'Stratton' and is taken from the wine list cover.
British Railways had a network of named trains for many years, usually main line 'expresses', and these services often had extensive catering and restaurant services. For these services BT's catering services frequently commissioned artwork for menu and wine list covers as can be seen here on the Dinner Menu card from the Ulster Express. It is not dated but others in this series are from late 1960. The Ulster Express ran from London Euston station to Heysham in Lancashire to connect with the ferry crossings.
It uses elements of the design seen on the cover of the Wine List for this train - sadly uncredited it has a 'feel' of Eric Fraser who was commissioned for many of these illustrations at the time. Many of them were printed at the Curwen Press in London.
A rather fine and deceptively simple menu card issued by Travellers-Fare, the catering arm of BTH and British Rail, in 1977. It is designed to go in a plastic folder along with the changing breakfast, dinner and drinks tariffs. Sadly the illustration of a passing woodland scene is not attributed.
Menus for Oak 63. These menus boards where screen printed on one side and the menu is printed daily and slipped into it.

I-5 Design and Manufacture created all of the interior signage and décor for Admiral Thriftway located in Seattle, Washington. The kiosk area needed a changeable menu sign. The center of this Kiosk sign was designed with the same style of pottery as in the other department signs throughout the interior of the market, to provide interest as well as promote the types of food located in that section. Each side of the sign is a changeable chalkboard. Click here to see more examples of market decor
