Scorch Salamander by KMR_Studios

A revised sketch of one of my Mega Man X9 original boss concepts, Scorch Salamander. He was based off a fire salamander.

SCORCH SALAMANDER | スコーチ・サラマンダー

A former member of the Maverick Hunters’ covert ops team who was unintentionally left for dead by his teammates during a mission gone wrong. Resurrected by an unknown party and driven mad, Salamander now guards a Maverick base located near a volatile volcano waiting to seek revenge.

Abilities:

- Able to withstand fire and lava of any degree.

- An excellent swimmer.

- Near vulnerability when covered in lava which he regularly coats himself in order to survive.

- Can fire sticky bombs covered in molten lava that explodes into fireballs.

- Sprays globs of lava from his mouth.

Weapon Obtained:

- [X] Magma Bomb - Fires a sticky bomb that explodes into three fireballs.

- [Zero] Lava Slash - Performs a quick forward slash, followed by a wave of lava behind him.

- [Axl] Melt Spray - Sprays globs of lava.

“Electrifying Speed Runner”

Lightning Cheetah is a reploid equipped with an built-in overclocked acceleration device and a fast CPU, enabling him to both run very fast without losing energy and think very quickly while moving. He was originally a recon soldier gathering intel for the Maverick Hunters prior to being corrupted. Being very difficult to track due to his speed, he was last spotted in Africa trying to derail a high speed transport train.

The weapon you obtain after defeating Lightning Cheetah is Spark Runner. It fires an electric spinning energy disc that travels extremely fast along floors, walls and ceilings. The charged version fires two cheetah-shaped electric blasts in both directions that travel very fast along the ground, walls and ceilings.

Designer notes:

This boss concept has been to the drawing board back and forth several times. Originally meant to be a fire-based cheetah boss, before deciding to make him an electric-based one. I named him Lightning Cheetah as he is a cheetah and cheetahs are fast runners in real life, as well as ‘lightning’ also means ‘very quick.’

so.. originally this wasn't going to be mega man... more of like a dark green armored new mega man anti-hero-ish person, but then i got the idea to dress it up like a game, and HAD to run with the idea. really really fun stuff. recreating the megman x logo, and capcom logo were probably the most tedious things of the whole picture. VERY fun experience.

this is just a fan's dream that the mega man x series will be continued, and brought back to nintendo where it started - perhaps thus becoming the "Luke Skywalker" of the megaman franchise which ultimately brings balance back to the force once and for all in a gauntlet run through emotions, last chances, shattering dreams, and reploid and maverick body parts alike.

Satellite Starfish by KMR_Studios

“Living Laser Weapon”

Satellite Starfish was a top secret prototype weapon created by the military for its growing space weapons program before being corrupted. His body is actually made up of several laser weapon drones & mini-satellite cannons while his head is a floating control module for these weapons. His monotonic and robotic personality along with his abilities to transform and regenerate any part of his body makes him dangerous. He has taken over a weapons center with the intent of using an untested space cannon against targets on Earth.

The weapon you obtain after defeating Satellite Starfish is Homing Laser. It summons five mini-starfish drones and targeting cursors that will lock onto enemies, allowing the drones to automatically fire multiple laser blasts. The charged version fires a large, horizontal laser blast.

Designer notes:

Out of all my Mega Man X9 boss concepts, I think Satellite Starfish is my favourite. His body is meant to be a fusion of all the laser drones, mini-satellite cannons and control module. And I added in some solar panels as well. Although him being a combined robot sounds similar to Impact Man from Mega Man 11, this is not totally the case as starfishes in real life have the ability to regrow any part of their bodies. My inspiration for this boss came from the Ion Cannon weapon from the old Command & Conquer games.

“Drift Polarbear” by KMR_Studios

“White Cold Stalker”

Little is known about Drift Polarbear, other than the fact that he is one of the last surviving members of the bounty hunter organization, Red Alert. He has taken over an arctic prison camp where he intends to unthaw thousands of dangerous mavericks for the rebellion, but his true goal is to rebuild Red Alert with them. He has the ability to create blizzards, allowing him to sneak up on enemies unnoticed.

The weapon you obtain after defeating Drift Polarbear is Ice Barrier. It summons an barrier consisting of rotating icicles that can be sent spiralling outwards, freezing any enemy the icicles hits. The charged version unleashes a full screen blizzard, which slows enemies and environmental objects temporarily.

Designer notes:

Since the Mega Man X series has two bear bosses for the record, Crescent Grizzly & Bamboo Pandamonium (Seriously, why not call him Bamboo Panda, Capcom?), I felt it was time to add another bear boss to the list. But like Scorch Salamander, this was another boss I had to design without ripping off its Mega Man Zero 2 counterpart. The key was making him different and giving him different attacks. Original name choices were Mist Polarbear and Whiteout Polarbear. Based on a polar bear, one of my favourite animals.

Needle Stonefish by KMR_Studios

“Underwater Stealth Assassin”

An assassin for hire, Needle Stonefish is on the Maverick Hunters’ Most Wanted list for the deaths of valuable reploids and humans. Recently hired by an unknown client to destroy X and his fellow hunters, he has taken refuge in an underwater laboratory where he patiently waits beneath the ocean floor for the opportunity to ambush his prey with his deadly razor-sharp needles.

The weapon you obtain after defeating Needle Stonefish is Needle Trap. It fires a glob of spikes that stick to floors and walls, damaging enemies who touch it. The charged version fires a wave of spikes that travel along the ground.

Designer notes:

The stonefish is considered one of the most venomous fish in the world with their spines and camouflaged appearance. Why not do a boss based off of one? My first original Mega Man X boss I created.

Magnet Treehopper by KMR_Studios

“Disciple of Magnetic Ninjutsu”

Unknown to the Maverick Hunters, the former hunter turned brainwashed assassin Magna Centipede had an apprentice, Magnet Treehopper whom he trained prior to his death. Having trained on his own for years, Treehopper is now ready to prove himself by destroying the Maverick Hunters and avenge his master’s death. He has taken refuge in a gravitational maze facility in a rainforest.

The weapon you obtain after defeating Magnet Treehopper is Bounce Magnet. It fires a magnetic orb that bounces across the area, pulling in debris after each bounce, creating a large ball of debris for more damage. It can also pull in certain enemies as well. The charged version generates a magnetic barrier that pulls in enemies and destroys them while protecting the user.

Designer notes:

My Mega Man X9 boss concepts needed an insect-based one. I came across pictures of a Brazilian Treehopper whom this character is based off to. It looked cool and freaky (especially with those “orbs” and “tail”) that I thought that’d make a good Mega Man X boss. And for those wondering, those wings are transparent.

“Whirlwind Halcyon” by KMR_Studios

“Dancing Wind Warrior”

Whirlwind Halcyon once served the Maverick Hunters under the 0 Special Unit and was well known for her spear weapon fighting style and wind manipulation abilities. Now corrupted, she has taken over an island radar outpost out in the sea, turning it into a fighting arena. She continues to hone her skills while waiting for a worthy opponent to challenge her on top of the tower.

The weapon you obtain after defeating Whirlwind Halcyon is Dancing Vortex. It fires a slow moving wind vortex that sucks in enemy shots while damaging enemies. The charged version unleashes a vertical tornado that sucks in nearby enemies while allowing the user to jump high if in the tornado.

Designer notes:

Another boss concept that is one of my favourites, a lot of thought was put into designing Whirlwind Halcyon. She is based off a Halcyon bird (or kingfisher birds as they’re sometimes called). There were Greek legends involving the Halcyon birds which were said to have the power to calm winds on the sea, so I used them for reference when coming up with her design as well as her attacks. I added in a little Greek warrior touch to her as well.

Scorch Salamander by KMR_Studios

“Volcanic Fire Fiend”

Scorch Salamander was originally a sabotage agent for the Maverick Hunters until a mission went horribly wrong, and was presumed dead by his fellow hunters. He somehow survived with a new body designed to survive extreme hot temperatures and even molten lava which he intends to take a splash in. Vowing revenge on his fellow hunters, he now joins the rebellion and guards a forbidden weapons facility located near a volcano.

The weapon you obtain after defeating Scorch Salamander is Magma Bomb. It fires a sticky bomb resembling molten rock that explodes into three fireballs. The charged version shoots a bomb into the air that explodes, raining fireballs in the process.

Designer notes:

This character was easy as he is based off a fire salamander. Since there is a similar character in Mega Man Zero 3 (who is based off a bearded lizard by the way), a lot of effort was made to make him different. The stripes on his body are suppose to resemble molten lava.

Impact Ram by KMR_Studios

“Metal Armoured Beast”

Impact Ram was once a member of the Maverick Hunters before he was expelled due of his reckless behaviour and use of force. He now joins the maverick rebellion and has taken control of a giant tank production factory on a mobile tank. With his impenetrable horns and armoured body, he is almost unstoppable even once he picks up speed.

The weapon you obtain after defeating Impact Ram is the Horn Bullet which fires a metal horn-shaped bullet that damages enemies and deflects shots in its path. The charged version allows you to perform a devastating air or ground dash, damaging any enemies and deflecting shots in your path while destroying certain blocks as well.

Designer notes:

When designing Impact Ram, there are three things that had to be implemented. One was that he had to be big, give him armour and make his horns as big as possible. Other design features were the boosters on his back and legs to help him move, and the ram horn textures on parts of his body. The scars on the metal parts of his body are meant to make him more intimidating. He is based off a ram, which is a male sheep.
