Portrait using a hard, gridded key light with a soft fill.
A series of examples that use a hard, restricted light as the key light. One possible problem with using a bare light as they key light is that the shadows tend to be very hard and very dark. To control the depth of shadows, we use a large, soft light source (softbox, in this case) as a fill light. By keeping the fill light very close to the camera axis, we avoid creating additional shadows with the fill light. If you don't have a second light, you can also use the ambient light as "fill."
The amount of fill light you use is entirely up to your taste and the look you want to create. This series includes one photo with just the key and no fill. Then there are examples with the fill set to about 1, 2, and 3 stops below the key light.

The first VC4Africa Meetup was held at Katch the Sun in Kampala, Uganda on June 30th, 2009. We had about 25 members show up and spent several hours networking and getting to know more about one another!
The energy and enthusiasm for this meeting really tapped into this idea that we should be connecting anywhere and everywhere people want to come together and talk about all of the opportunities and possibilities in Africa.
The VC4Africa meetup concept was born and we have now seen members take similar initiatives across the world. As of 2011 more than 25 meetups have been organized and counting....

Dozens of community members came to our Sustainable Food Meetup to learn how eating sustainably can help fight climate change. During this free event hosted by GreenChange.net, we discussed how our food choices impact the climate crisis.
Featured speakers included:

• Mark Squire, Good Earth partner and organic farmer
• Writer Anne Marie Guglielmo and her son Gus
They talked about some of the ways we can change the way we eat, reduce food waste, switch to a plant-rich diet and support sustainable farming. These informative talks were followed by a lively group discussion, when we shared best practices for sustainable eating -- and our favorite vegetarian recipes.
This community meetup took place in our partner Good Earth’s new classroom in Mill Valley on November 13th, 2019 at 6pm. It was led by Fabrice Florin, with the help of Lily Cohen, Al Grumet, Kelly Horner, Rob Mayfield and Marilyn Price. We’re grateful to all our gracious contributors. :)

On February 22nd we hosted the first VC4Africa meetup in Oslo, Norway. This was the second event in the region, with a meet up held previously in Stockholm. This was a great step forward for the community and its great to see members taking a proactive approach to grow the VC4A network in the Nordic countries. This event was hosted by Svein Mork Dahl.
