Cap de Cavalleria is the northernmost point on Menorca, the end of a long and barren peninsula that extends about 4km north of the rest of the island. The scenery around the area is dramatic. It is not well visited as an attraction, but for those that do the area has a dramatic landscape and drive on offer. The area around here is remote and uninhabited, miles away from the sandy beaches and large hotels. This area is often thought of as a rather desolate area pounded in the winter by the island's famous tramontana wind. The tramontana wind is a classical name for a northern wind. Far from desolate this northern area is rich in history and embellished by beautiful beaches such as Playa de Cavalleria. The walk from Cap de Cavalleria is not difficult although the going can be hard in places and the pathways can be a little uneven and rocky. Good comfortable shoes, sun hat, sun cream, bathing costume, a picnic and a large bottle of water is all that's needed.
How to reach Cap de Cavalleria? Firstly, from the village of Es Mercadal in the centre of the island. Follow the signs to the northern beaches “Playas del Norte". This route takes you through the Tramontana way (camino de Tramontana). Take the road to Cavalleria. The picture shows a rugged, rocky cove with dramatic 90 m high cliffs plunging into the sea. There is no beach at this northernmost point on Menorca - Spain.

The European Shag or Common Shag is a species of cormorant. It breeds here around the rocky coasts of Menorca - Balearic island of Spain. The green sheen on the feathers and green eyes results in the alternative name Green Cormorant. The European Shag is one of the deepest divers among the cormorant family. Using depth gauges, European Shags have been shown to dive to at least 45 metres. They find their prey on the sea bottom. They will eat a wide range of fish but their commonest prey is the sand eel. Shags will travel many kilometres from their roosting sites in order to feed. The dive times are typically around 20–45 seconds, with a recovery time of around 15 seconds between dives; this is consistent with aerobic diving, i.e. the bird depends on the oxygen in its lungs and dissolved in its bloodstream during the dive. When they dive, they jump out of the water first to give extra impetus to the dive. It breeds on coasts, nesting on rocky ledges or in crevices or small caves. The nests are untidy heaps of rotting seaweed or twigs.
From our apartment in Cala'n Bosch on the Spanish island of Menorca we found ourselves nestling between a spectacular coastline and the outstanding natural environments that have earned world-wide acclaim for Menorca. In 1993 UNESCO declared the island of Menorca Biosphere Reserve. UNESCO considered Menorca worthy of this declaration for the diversity of its Mediterranean landscape and the species of animals and plants found exclusively on The island, some of which are in danger of extinction. We explore some unique scenic landscapes on foot. We hike along along the coast line and found this peacefully rural location where we met the Green Cormorants nesting on the rocks. It is located on the South West tip of the island.
De Kuif Aalscholver is een vogel uit de orde van Suliformes. De vogel wordt ongeveer 75 centimeter groot, iets kleiner dan de gewone aalscholver. Verder lijken de soorten veel op elkaar, maar de kuifaalscholver heeft een dunnere snavel, een groenachtige ogen en verenglans en een voornamelijk bij adulte vogels zichtbare kuif. Kuifaalscholvers komen zelden in het binnenland voor. De kleur is groenzwart, met een gele snavelbasis. De kuifaalscholver onderscheidt zich in de broedtijd van de gewone aalscholver door o.a. een kleine, naar voren buigende kuif en het verenkleed is voornamelijk krijgt een groene glans. Buiten de broedtijd is de kuifaalscholver te herkennen aan het kleinere formaat, een minder dikke snavel en de rondere kop. De kuifaalscholver is een echte zeevogel en laat zich in tegenstelling tot de gewone aalscholver zelden in het binnenland zien. De aalscholver is een echte viseter. Ze kunnen langer dan een minuut onder water blijven en ze zwemmen met behulp van de zwemvliezen aan hun poten achter de prooi aan. De staart doet dan dienst als roer. De aalscholver heeft niet zo'n goede waterafstotende vetlaag als andere watervogels. Het verenkleed van de aalscholver is waterdoorlatend, omdat hij anders niet zou kunnen duiken. Bij het duiken naar vis wordt hij nat tot op de huid. Na het duiken gaat de aalscholver met uitgespreide vleugels op een paaltje of tak bij het water zitten. Hij droogt op deze manier zijn veren. De vogel broedt langs de noordelijke kusten van de Atlantische oceaan en langs de kusten van de Middellandse Zee, zoals hier op Menorca. In Nederland is de kuifaalscholver zeldzaam.

High waves hit the rugged North coast of Menorca. The scenery around the area is dramatic. The area around here is remote, miles away from the sandy beaches and large hotels. Thanks to this protection of the narrow mouth of the harbour to the sea, the 5 km of length of the bay and the 2 kms. of width, marine sports activities have a privileged place in Fornells. There in its calm waters you can practice windsurf, saling, kayak and diving. The wind is usually moderate and sufficient for surfers, divers will find plenty of life at the bottom of the sea and those on their kayaks will be delighted by the unspoiled coves and the wild beauty of the coast. A walk around the peninsula of Fornells is not difficult although the going can be hard in places and the pathways can be a little uneven and rocky. Fornells heeft een prachtig haventje , maar nog niet heel erg toeristisch. Dit komt mede doordat Fornells zelf geen strand heeft. Wist u dat de Spaanse koning Juan Carlos altijd met zijn jacht in de haven van Fornells aanmeert? In Fornells kunt je naast de stoofschotel de beroemde langoustinensoep caldereta de llagosta proberen, die zo goed is, dat de koning hiervoor snel van Mallorca hiernaartoe zeilt.

Cales Coves has a small coarse beach reached by a short walk down a steep sided limestone gorge. It has two small beaches. Access is from the road between Cala’n Porter and Sant Climent but be warned! The road down to Cales Coves is about 1.5 km long and very bumpy. It is worth the 10-15 minute drive though, as you will discover once you arrive at the small parking area. Apart from the beautiful bays at Cales Coves you will also discover a few fascinating burial caves with its necropolis from 9 B.C. This beach sports more than 100 prehistoric caves that have made it famous. Some you can reach via a footpath over the cliffs, which also takes you over the rock head and on to a second cove. There are many caves high up in the walls of the gorge, making the exploration of this area very exciting for children and their mom & dad as well. Some caves are inaccessible. If you have the time and energy check out Cales Coves smaller second bay by clambering over the rock head, then go for a dip in the bay's other fork. Nudists use the rocky shelves and cave entrances and swim in the waters of the coves. Menorca is laid back and offers many golden opportunities for Naturists on its unspoiled shores. There are several naturist beaches around the island where Nudity is permitted but not required.
Cales Coves is an attractive bay situated on the South East coast of Menorca. Nudists use the rocky shelves and prehistoric cave entrances and swim in the clear waters of the coves getting "back to nature". Naturism is a lifestyle in harmony with nature. Menorca is laid back and offers many golden opportunities for Naturists on its unspoiled shores.
Het kost heel wat moeite er te komen – een ruige rit op vier wielen of een stevige wandeltocht tussen de olijfbomen van Son Vitamina – maar als u bij Cales Coves arriveert, wordt u begroet door één van de meest onvergetelijke plekken op Menorca. De kliffen die op deze beschutte baai neerkijken herbergen meer dan 100 grotten uit de Bronstijd, uit de rots gehakt en gebruikt als grafkamers en woningen – de doden waren de buren van de levenden. De oudste grotten dateren van de 9de eeuw v.Chr.; volg het voetpad over de rotsen aan uw rechterhand en u bereikt een tweede baai. Onderweg komt u langs recentere grotten - 4de eeuw v.Chr., met ramen, binnenplaatsen en cellen. Sommige dragen Romeinse inscripties, wat aangeeft dat ze ook na de Talaiot-tijd in gebruik waren. Er zijn zelfs grotten die nu nog bewoond worden door moderne holbewoners. U ziet ze water halen bij een bron en naakt in de kristallen zee baden. Van tijd tot tijd proberen de autoriteiten deze moderne holenmensen ertoe te bewegen te vertrekken, maar ze keren altijd terug. Als u een kijkje neemt in één van de onbewoonde grotten, ziet u hippieschilderijen met zonnen, manen en bloemen op de muren. De prehistorische bewoners hadden een goede plek uitgekozen – de hoek van de inhammen zorgt voor beschutting tegen de open zee. Dat maakt de baaien 's zomers ook goede ankerplaatsen voor pleziervaartuigen. De stranden zijn eerder kiezelig dan zanderig, maar u kunt vanaf de rotsen goed zwemmen. Cales Coves zijn een ideale bestemming voor rustzoekers en liefhebbers van zwemmen. Naturisme wordt dus in deze afgelegen baai toegestaan.
