nightswimming deserves a quiet night

the photograph on the dashboard, taken years ago,

turned around backwards so the windshield shows

every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse

still, it's so much clearer

i forgot my shirt at the water's edge

the moon is low tonight

nightswimming deserves a quiet night

i'm not sure all these people understand

it's not like years ago,

the fear of getting caught,

of recklessness and water

they cannot see me naked

these things, they go away,

replaced by everyday

nightswimming, remembering that night

september's coming soon

i'm pining for the moon

and what if there were two

side by side in orbit

around the fairest sun?

that bright, tight forever drum

could not describe nightswimming

you, i thought i knew you

you, i cannot judge

you, i thought you knew me,

this one laughing quietly underneath my breath

nightswimming

the photograph reflects,

every streetlight a reminder

nightswimming deserves a quiet night, deserves a quiet night

Karate for Kids Testimonial and Review

When my eight-year-old son first asked me if I would let him take Karate for Kids, I was a little worried. Karate seems so dangerous and I was concerned that my boy would end up injured. After talking with my husband, we agreed to give the program a chance and now we are so glad that we did.

First of all, I would like to state that Master Babin is wonderful with the children. While I was apprehensive that the Karate class would be all about fighting, I was relieved to learn that the focus was more on self-defense and moral values. Now my son is healthier than ever, doing an activity that he truly loves.

I would encourage every parent out there looking for a fun exercise-based activity for his or her child to participate in their Karate for Kids program a chance. My son is constantly talking about what he learned in his past karate lessons and practicing his blocks and punches in the living room. He is even playing his video games less.

After my initial reservations, I now cannot imagine my son participating in any other karate program. Consider this my highest recommendation.

Reviews on Karate for Kids

When my son started karate instruction with Karate for Kids, he was timid, had few friends and had trouble paying attention in school. I didn't agree with the doctor who tried to tell me he had Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and that I should put him on medication to control it. To me, my son just needed some loving guidance, not to be medicated.

That is when I asked my good friend about her children's experiences with the local martial arts Instructor. Like my son, her children did not have a father figure in their lives and suffered greatly as the result. When they were approaching their teenage years, she decided to enroll them in karate at Karate For Kids Within a matter of weeks, I saw her pre-teen son and daughter become more confident, focused and goal-oriented and knew I wanted the same for my child.

After his very first lesson, my son, then aged nine, was already a changed child. He overflowed with enthusiasm as he explained how the karate for kids program pushed him to reach goals, but was "really nice" about it. To this mom, that means that my son finally got the caring, personal instruction that he deserves.

Thank you for such a fantastic Karate For Kids Program

Testimonial and Review on Martial Arts For Men

I am a forty-eight year old man and, until about four months ago, I had really let myself go. Between work-related stress and the other pressures of my day-to-day existence, I made little time for exercise and gave almost no thought to a healthy diet. In short, I was a mess.

One day, a colleague at my office took me aside and recommended that I sign up for the martial arts program offered locally. He had recently signed up for a class and loved it. After some convincing, I agreed to accompany him to his next class.

Fast-forward to today and I now love my martial arts training. Martial Arts for men workouts feels less like training and more like fun. I have been losing weight and now have a new energy when facing the daily grind. I have gone from one class a week to two, and am thinking of adding a third.

If you are looking for a fun way to get in shape, I would advise you to come on down our Martial Arts for Men Academy. You will not regret it.

Testimonial and Review on Martial Arts For Women

I never would have thought that taking up martial arts, would change me so much as a person and in so many ways. I still use every occasion to thank my friends, for recommending me the Martial Art courses for women taught by a martial arts school that teaches quality skill sets for women

I used to be a very shy person, and had become quite fearful after having my purse stolen one evening. Now, that is no longer the case. Since participating in the martial arts courses, I have felt more empowered than ever. I enjoyed the friendly and encouraging atmosphere right from the start, and did not feel ashamed of my initial clumsiness.

Now, I can actually impress my friends with some of the moves I learned. Also, I am fully aware that martial arts represent a life style just as much as anything else. My Instructor simply amazed all of us throughout the entire program, with his dedication and willingness to teach us. In fact, we could hardly wait for the next session.

I truly recommend anyone to make the same change I made in my life. Looking back, I really cannot see my weekly schedule without my martial arts training sessions.

Taking a martial arts class was not something I had given much consideration prior to turning 30. Wanting to preserve my strength and flexibility for years to come finally enticed me to take the plunge. The immediate results were stunning and I found myself feeling more energetic and confident in just a few sessions.

Not only are his martial arts skills top-notch, but I find his enthusiasm and enjoyment of the sport to be infectious. Considering that this entire venture was foreign to me, I felt right at home during my very first class. In addition to training in martial arts my instructor has a great deal of patience and warmth, the other karate students in the session were just as receptive to me. They really know how to make new members feel welcome.

Learning the forms and methods involved in martial arts is a great experience, but what makes these classes truly exceptional is that we learn how to incorporate the philosophy and principals behind this art form into our everyday lives. I look forward to my sessions with my instructor, and find his classes to be a great way to invest in myself, while having some fun at the same time. It is more than just kicking and punching it’s a well rounded martial arts program.

With Great Thanks,

UVic wins Supreme Court battle to keep students safe from Marijuana Menace - pothead stopped from making birdhouse.

Solely based upon the existence of my Medical Marijuana License and prescription for marijuana, and without any evidence or witnesses showing that I was misusing my medication before entering the workshop, and without any evidence or credible eyewitness accounts of impaired behaviors, I am not allowed into the workshop to complete my university degree – without a note from my doctor stating that it is safe for me to use marijuana in the workshop, in spite of the note I have from my doctor stating that it is safe for me to use marijuana in the workshop. The judge stated that the note I have from my knee specialist is not acceptable, but he did not state in what form the note should be.

Because of this debacle, I am stuck with student loan and lawyer debt totalling over 15 thousand dollars, I am unable to complete my degree because the entry level class is a requirement, and I am left assumed impaired until proven sober by the University of Victoria and the BC Supreme Court.

Federally Licensed Medical Marijuana Patient Branded; without evidence, assumed baked and dangerous until proven sober.

Dean often shows up to writing class "in an over medicated state." (Lynne Van Luven, UVic)

Student [narc] Jenny Wooding "encountered Bruce in class and claims that he was far more impaired [on marijuana] than she was [on narcotics]."

"Mr. Dean’s submission that the Tribunal should consider the lack of material from the respondents establishing that he used marijuana or abused marijuana seems hollow."

[Asking to be considered innocent until proven guilty is a hollow request? For potheads, I guess.]

I was registered at UVic, working toward two degrees,

 BA in Creative Non-Fiction (1 class left, to be finished this next term).

 BFA in Visual Art (on hold because of this mess)

o I was registered in a Sculpting class, with a Shop component, to make a bird house mount.

A p/t UVic employee in the shop, Doug Smith, apparently also worked for a business that serviced one of my mobility aides. Through this he was aware of my federal medical marijuana license. He informed the Shop instructor, Daniel Wilkin, who pulled me from the class on this knowledge.

I lost a term at school; I’m stuck with the student loan debt for the wasted term and several thousand in lawyer fees, so far. I'm a 55 year old single father living on CPP Disability and a small WCB pension.

UVic’s own documentation admits that I had not been observed impaired,

 "...the initial assessment was based on second hand information and that it was not made by visual assessment."

 "...at the initial time of decision making the student [Bruce Dean] had not been observed officially. That Dan had made his decision based on the information Doug [Smith] had told him."

 "...the University determined that there was no professional on campus who was qualified to judge dosage levels and the physical and psychological behavioral effects of marijuana in respect of the contemplated risks." (Uvic)

 Dean often shows up to writing class "in an over medicated state." (Lynne Van Luven)

UVic’s attempts to prove I was impaired were insulting. My favorite was provided by an impaired student narc;

 "...she [Jenny Wooding] was outside with a couple of students that were smoking weed (she was just present not partaking) [sure, sure, that’s what they all say] and compared her impairment [from narcotic pain killers] to theirs and found it to be about the same. She then encountered Bruce in class and claims that he was far more impaired than she was."

 (this narc's info didn't surface until after UVic had made their assessment of my impairment)

 She admits that she was impaired on narcotics yet she claims she is able to judge levels of impairment.

 What did UVic do about the people Jenny Wooding reported were likely smoking marijuana illegally?

The case went through the Human Rights Tribunal system,

 The Settlement Hearing failed when UVic refused to compensate me for the debt incurred.

 The Human Rights Tribunal Adjudicator eventually ruled against me,

o The flawed decision was based on an issue that didn't exist. She claimed that because I failed to include a copy of my federal license, I was unable to prove my case (prima facia ?); that I was unable to prove that I was legally entitled to use marijuana as medication in the first place.

o The problem with this is of course was that everybody accepted as fact, except the adjudicator, that I was disabled and that I held a federal exemption allowing me to legally use marijuana.

 The entire basis of the UVic reason for my expulsion was their discovery and confirmation that I had a medical prescription.

ACCOMMODATIONS Offered by UVic

o When assessing that UVic had offered me accommodations, the adjudicator ignored the delay of their offer (après removal from class) (I was kept out of class for a month), the limitations of my disability, and the financial loss I needlessly suffered because of UVic’s poor handling of my case.

 All accommodations offered came AFTER the initial insults and prolonged exclusion from class, which greatly disrupted my education. My surgery had little to do with the deferral of my classes. I‘ve had 20 surgeries on my knees, so far, and never have I needed to defer a class.

 All accommodations ignored the financial loss and physical limitations of my disability. The accommodation's expectations exceeded the limitations of my disability and my finances. I should not be stuck with the student loan expense for a term I was not allowed to complete, nor should I be expected to work at the detriment of my disability.

 All accommodations, and the decision by the Human Rights Tribunal, operate under the assumption that I was impaired.

 Because of the existence of my medical marijuana license and prescription, I am assumed impaired until proven sober.

This gorgeous galah presented to me in a dreadful state. He was lucky to be alive as the rest of his mob was run over by a truck. He came in with a very swollen eyelid, head trauma and degloving injury to his wing. I had to crop feed him and medicate him daily. After one week, he became more responsive and feisty and it was great to see. I sent him to a wildlife carer to practice flying prior to being released back into the wild. I grew very fond of him. Unfortunately, the feeling wasn't mutual, hehehe...Always a good sign when they act instinctively!

I'm a tongue-tied torture, roasted on a spit

split down the middle of a two-tone brain

I chose sane because meditating

was easier than medicating

but in the process of braiding my DNA

someone slipped a slipknot in

I can't win because I come unraveled

by one loose thread in a wool sweater soul

caught on a loose screw

then pulled some more

I'm such a bore in a tug-of-war

I drop the line

and jump in the mud puddle every time

I'm in the quicksand, quick, throw me a stick

I'm unhappy as a pin-pricked pig in a pit

but this won't hurt a bit

that's what they say before every new pain

like weather forecasters denying heavy rain

leave your umbrella by the door

roll your sleeve to your shoulder

burn your passport in the barbeque

then walk to the border

see how life goes

where nothing is planted

but pitcher plants grow

between the crosses, row on row

the stones never show

how the ones they mark were left behind

but I often wish I could write a few lines

this one "forgotten while living

remembered fondly while fallen"

that one was someone else's problem

Martial Arts For Women in Chandler, Arizona

Jackie W

Have you ever considered how sometimes the "truth" seems so much stranger than "fiction"? I'm always at a loss as why the idea of "mind control" necessarily has to have esoteric, occult or outlandish sounding conspiracy theory explanations that are difficult to articulate without sounding somewhat crazy and easily discredited by cynics. But that's just me.

To me the issue of so called “mind control” is as simple as the manipulation of mass consciousness through fear. Fear of fear itself (terrorism and uncertainty), fear of strangers, fear of not being sexy or not cool enough, fear-based demonizations of foreign cultures, religions, political ideologies, racial stereotypes and alternative sexual orientations.

The control of minds is often achieved through the self-censuring fear of being thought of as "soft"on on crime and communism, “soft” on terrorism, of being unpatriotic, un-Christian, or a relativist liberal with no moral anchor. This can easily cause us to self-doubt, self-medicate, become polarized, paralyzed, divided and isolated. Easy prey for mind control.

The “White Elephant in the living room” stares at the “800 pound gorilla” on the couch and says:

Projecting power in the world is nothing new but, what we have now is world that is getting smaller, parsed-out and controlled in ways that would have surprised even George Orwell. Globalized mass audiences and diverse constituencies being addressed by the insidious and pervasive language of multinational corporate political power.

In the US the power elites seem to disavow displays of ostentatious wealth and leave that to the nuveau riche, athletes and people in the entertainment business. In the Symbology of the language of control, these folks are held up as examples of an implied promise that such things are surely possible for anyone. While the true power elites shy away from such displays, their charitable activities only hint at their true wealth and power. Their charitable foundations, grants and symbolic grand gestures actually help to hide their wealth and facilitate the lawful evasion of taxes to the commomwealth of the nation.

This misdirection or subterfuge is aided by an economic system that facilitates credit and encourages consumption by the masses as a substitute for an authentic sense of self worth, their true lack of political power and their shrinking acquisitive capacities.

The perversity and the sad irony of this system is that the political candidates of the powerful elite often mascarade as populist advocates on behalf of the powerless, freedom and the American way.

The myth of “free market capitalism” is held out as a promise just over the horizon that will surely reward the truly patient, hardworking, God loving and patriotic. A system of economics with the trappings of a secular state religion and doctrinal faith that rewards blind obediance and confers rightousness to the compliant.

To add insult to injury, questioning or critiqing the status quo are repudiated as divisive “class warfare”. If it sounds Orwellian or if it walks and talks like a duck....maybe it is. The “feel-good” mantras of “freedom of choice”, “democracy”, equality and the intrinsic “goodness of the American way” serve as the modern day “opiate of the people”.

The powerful manipulation of symbols that cover up this reality are at the root of what can only be referred to as mass mind control. I have to say, George W and his transparent greedy cohorts have done more for my education in this area than anything I studied in school. For this I am grateful…..especially on this Thanksgiving Day.

Remember, don't be fooled into believing that you need to shop till you drop to enjoy the holidays or that the state of the US economy rests on your shoulders on “Black Friday”. Just show your love, understanding and tolerance...and not just for those you already know and love.

GRACIAS A LA VIDA

(Violeta Parra)

Graba noche y día, grillos y canarios,

Martillos, turbinas, ladridos, chubascos,

Y la voz tan tierna de mi bien amado.

Gracias a la vida que me ha dado tanto.

Me ha dado el sonido y el abecedario;

Con à l las palabras que pienso y declaro:

Madre, amigo, hermano, y luz alumbrando

La ruta del alma del que estoy amando.

Gracias a la vida que me ha dado tanto.

Me ha dado la marcha de mis pies cansados;

Chocolate covered marshmallows. I have an addiction to sweets.

Sugar.. I love sugar. Sweet tea, chocolate, skittles. I love them all.

I also haven't been to the dentist in about 8 years. Three cheers for no dental insurance!

My addiction to sugar coupled with the fact that I've either been nursing or pregnant for 6 years have given me really horrible teeth.

So horrible it's embarrassing really.

I had half a molar break off months ago but have been pretending that it's not a problem. Until yesterday. That's when the pain started. Pain so severe that it's worth than childbirth. Yes I said it. Worse than childbirth.

My gums are swollen and red, not to mention that side of my face looking slightly larger than the other.

So tomorrow morning I will face my fears and sit in the dreaded chair. He will stick needles in my gums and try to remove the tooth. If he can even get it out. Time will only tell.

All I have to say is that today I'm incredibly grateful for a mother in law who hoards pain pills and antibiotics. Yes, I'm self medicating. The pain pills work for about two hours by the way, then I have to suffer for 4 more until I can take another.

If I disappear from flickr, you guys will know it's because I died of a panic attack over having to go to the dentist.

I'm gonna puke.

Warm medicated oil is poured over my head in a rhythmic fashion through this.

My 54th "Squirrel Run" of the year at the University of Michigan since our work from home started to combat COVID-19. Pictures on Friday December 11th, a lovely day in Ann Arbor, well, from a weather perspective. Saw a number of squirrels have mange on the Diag, and I hooked them up with medicated pecans. The campus was mostly empty and the squirrels are getting ready for winter. Sending love and virtual hugs from Ann Arbor, Michigan.
