Hundreds of National Nurses United nurses from across the country gathered in Washington, D.C. on April 29 and 30 for their annual Lobby Day events and to champion their top priority: winning passage of H.R. 1384, the House Medicare for All bill cosponsored by Reps. Pramila Jayapal and Debbie Dingell that would guarantee health care in the United States as a human right. Through political demonstrations, direct actions, and sharing personal stories at visits to their elected officials, nurses pressured lawmakers to base policy on the needs of people and workers, not corporate profits. The nurses claimed a huge victory when Rep. Richard Neal announced on April 30 that he would schedule Medicare for All hearings in Ways and Means, a key committee for any health care legislation.

Day 1 kicked off with a massive demonstration by nurses and allied health care activists from a variety of labor, social justice, and progressive political groups in front of the headquarters of PhRMA, the pharmaceutical industry's national lobbying organization. Speakers shared stories and called out Big Pharma not only for its opposition to Medicare for All, but for its price gouging and $28 million spent on lobbying last year to influence lawmakers. Ady Barkan, a longtime health care activist dying from ALS, risked his health to travel to D.C. and give emotional testimony about why Medicare for All is needed NOW. Protestors capped the rally by using bandages to tape up copies of GoFundMe pages that people had set up to crowdsource medications and medical procedures. Later that day, nurses also heard from Reps. Jayapal and Dingell, as well as AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Liz Shuler.

Day 2 events included direct actions where nurses presented Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Ways and Means Committee Chair Rep. Richard Neal with giant pills of paper money to pressure them to hold hearings on H.R. 1384; nurses witnessing a historic House Rules Committee hearing on the bill; remarks from Sen. Bernie Sanders and Reps. Ro Khanna and Rashida Tlaib; and dozens of visits by nurses to Capitol Hill legislators to garner support not only for Medicare for All, but safe staffing ratios, a national standard to prevent workplace violence in health care settings, and full union rights for VA nurses.

Every year this group shows up. Despite the fun and frivolity of the Doo Dah Parade, this group is also very serious about pushing single payer healthcare for everyone. They just pick different themes for each year.

Today, National Nurses United (NNU), along with a broader coalition of pro-Medicare for All organizations rallied outside of the national headquarters of PhRMA in support of Medicare for All. Hundreds of nurses, patients and supporters organized outside of the company’s front doors with chants and stories of how PhRMA’s focus on profits has caused hardships for many people.

“We have seen patients rationing their insulin to stay alive and families who can’t afford the medications their children need for treating leukemia. Families have to choose between facing homelessness or caring for their children,” said NNU Executive Director Bonnie Castillo, RN. “Drug companies know this, and still choose to prioritize profits over people. This is why we need Medicare for All, to protect patients from the abuses of Big Pharma.”

The rally culminated with a powerful action where nurses used Band-Aids to paste large print outs of various GoFundMe pages that people had set up to crowdsource medications and medical procedures

“Every day, we nurses see the painful toll our current for-profit health insurance system is taking on our patients. Expenses are so crippling that even people ‘with insurance’ have to set up GoFundMe campaigns in order to afford life-saving procedures – this is unacceptable,” said NNU President Zenei Cortez, RN. “The only groups opposed to Medicare for All are the ones profiting off of the status quo – insurance companies, Big Pharma, and the lobbyists who carry out their agenda.”

Nurses have led the grassroots movement for Medicare for All for decades, and have launched an unprecedented, national grassroots movement in support of this legislation, which includes thousands of canvasses and phone banks in every state across the country. H.R. 1384 will be taken up for a hearing in the House Rules Committee tomorrow – the first full committee hearing on Medicare for All -- and NNU will be on Capitol Hill to advocate in support of the bill and to mark this historic first step towards health care justice.

Largest U.S. Nurses’ Union Champions New Medicare for All House Bill — H.R. 1384

RNs are organizing an unprecedented, grassroots movement to back the new legislation

National Nurses United (NNU) announced its strong support for the new Medicare for All Act of 2019, introduced today by Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), with backing from more than 100 members of Congress.

“As the largest union of registered nurses in the country, we could not be more proud of Rep. Jayapal for leading the way on this legislation that will change and save our patients’ lives. This bill is not only the most comprehensive Medicare for All act we have seen to date, but it is being introduced at a time when a majority of Americans are fed up with incremental tweaks to the current broken system and are demanding Medicare for All. It’s the right bill, at the right moment—and now we are organizing an unprecedented grassroots movement to demand that our elected officials support this legislation,” said NNU Executive Director Bonnie Castillo, RN.
