Focal Point Challenge "Mechanical Thread"

Month of Mornings 4/30, Port of Napier, Napier, New Zealand

For my 4th day of #monthofmornings I headed around to Ahuriri, with the promise of a bit of cloud and low tide.

One of the reasons I am committing to getting up every morning to get out and shoot at sunrise, is to show that sometimes the conditions do not lend themselves to producing the types of images that you might want to shoot. This morning was one of those mornings. And that is ok. There is always tomorrow.

So I pointed my camera at the cranes of Napier Port and shot a silhouette. It was about the best image I got for my hour long shoot, and it is nice enough, but not what I was hoping for.

And that is ok. There is always tomorrow.

The group's first album, Spirit, was released in 1968. "Mechanical World" was released as a single (it lists the playing time merely as "very long"). The album was a substantial underground hit, reaching #31 and staying on the charts for over eight months. The album displayed jazz influences, as well as using elaborate string arrangements (not found on their subsequent recordings) and is the most overtly psychedelic of their albums.

Foolishness abounds, but it's still fun.

Many thanks for your visits, faves and comments. Cheers.

Eastern Osprey

Scientific Name: Pandion cristatus

The aerial displays of the Eastern Osprey often feature two birds soaring together in a series of undulations, or one following the other on a weaving course. These may occur near the nest, which is a huge structure made of sticks, driftwood and seaweed. As the nest is used year after year, the material may accumulate to form an enormous pile of sticks, sometimes 2 metres across and 2 metres tall, with the size and shape determined by the nest-site and how long it has been used.

Description: The Osprey is a medium-sized fish-eating raptor (bird of prey). It has dark brown upperparts contrasting with pale underparts. There is a black band through the eye, separating the white throat from the pale crown. The Osprey has a rather small head and neck and typically swivels its head around or sways its head from side to side. When it is perched, there is a short bristly crest. The eyes are placed well forward on the head. The fingered wings in flight are narrow and angled distinctively. There are dark carpal patches on the underwing (at the bend in the wing). The beak is strongly hooked and the legs are powerful. The female is similar to the male but is larger and has a fuller, darker breast band. The Osprey is also called the Fish Hawk or White-headed Osprey.

Similar Species: The White-bellied Sea-Eagle, Haliaeetus leucogaster, is much larger and soars with up-swept wings, rather than the sharply bowed wings of the Osprey.

Distribution: The Osprey is cosmopolitan, being found in many coastal and lake areas of the world. In Australia, it is found on the north and east coast from Broome to the south coast of New South Wales. There is also a southern population from Kangaroo Island to the Great Australian Bight and a western population from Esperance to Cape Keraudren. Ospreys are also found in the Phillipines, Indonesia and New Guinea.

Habitat: Ospreys are found on the coast and in terrestrial wetlands of tropical and temperate Australia and off-shore islands, occasionally ranging inland along rivers, though mainly in the north of the country.

Feeding: The Osprey feeds mainly on medium-sized live fish, which it does not swallow whole, but rips apart to eat. The Osprey patrols the coast, searching for prey. It folds its wings, then drops headlong, with its feet forward to snatch a fish with its talons. It may go right under the water or snatch a fish from the surface, before lifting off again, with strong wing strokes.

Breeding: The Osprey may use the same nest year after year. The nest is made from sticks and driftwood and may be huge after many years. It is usually placed on a cliff, a dead tree or even a radio mast. Both birds bring sticks, but the female usually places the sticks in the nest. The nest is lined with grass, seaweed or bark. The female does most of the incubation, while the male brings food to the nest.

an old friend of mine asked back in winter to help him with some shots of his chopper. it was a life dream of his to get into some biker mags. he even arranged the obligatory bikini model.

we met after work at a biker bar south of raleigh. i shot some pool, had a beer or two, hung out with the owner and his minature doberman Spike while i waited.

once my friend showed up, we rolled down to a nearby lake for some shots - the bikini model was stuck at work.

we got a couple test shots in that afternoon, and we'll do the real set next tuesday.

created this today with ali and kenzie at our workshop!

the title came from ali, who had been thinking about a way to use it. when ali proposed the title, and how she had been wanting to do something with ribbons wrapping around, kristi immediately said "reminds me of something mechanical pumping a heart." and thus, this image was born! after hearing both of those thoughts, i started to see this story of an old mad and lonely scientist, who just wont give up til he has created his perfect magical woman to love forever. the title could then be given the double meaning to his creation, which is a bit mechanical in nature.

i absolutely love how this turned out... its really mysterious in its elements, and a bit weird feeling to be honest, but i think it could portray soooo many things. im thankful that ali and kenzie came out for their workshop today, because without their ideas, this photo never would have been created! and funny fact - the boy character here is being played by my beautiful intern sophia! who woulda thought with a few bobby pins and a big jacket she would be so manly! :P

i also shot a personal concept today as the basis for our workshop so hopefully ill get that one edited up and posted soon. :)

I cropped this one carefully, shooting for its mechanical nature and its greasy texture.

While stopped at a traffic light, I found myself next to a flatbed trailer carrying paving equipment. Hours of working with asphalt have given this machine its greasy blackened, reddened look.
