Measured for 3" rule

Life isn't measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

-Anonymous

Model: Suyin

Location: Planta Hotel, Bacolod City

The poet T. S. Eliot made part of that sentence famous, but he actually wrote,

"I have measured out my life with coffee spoons."

My husband uses tea bags, and began to collect them for me. Hasn’t it been one helluva year? And it isn't over yet.

But I've discovered some surprising small and good things as we’ve sheltered...about him, about pleasure in one decent photo, the joy of an unexpected text.

And you?

These eagles have been nesting at Lake Wooddruff Preserver for many years judging by the size of the nest. American Bald Eagles mate for life and use the same nest each year unless the nest has been destroyed or the tree dies and becomes unsafe. When mating season start they return to the nest and start repairing and adding to the nest. This results in the nest becoming quite large. The largest on record, according to Guinness Book of World Records, was found near St. Petersburg Florida and measured 9ft wide by 20ft deep and weighed more that 2 tons.

(Eacles imperialis) Measured wingspan is approx. 4 in. (10cm). Imperial moths (their many regional morphs, subspecies, and sibling species) range from Argentina to Canada and from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Coast. A fé, não se mede... Sinta a fé!

Portugal, Fátima, Ourém

The man measured his life between trees

With each new oak, aspen, elm, or palm

He would force himself

To make a decision

Often, they were completely Inconsequential

He’d decide to text his daughter Hello

To schedule a meet up with a friend to play cards

Or what he might eat for lunch

On occasion, reaching

The next tree

Helped with more momentous choices

Should he move closer to his son and grandson?

Should he give a substantial donation to clarity?

Should he invite his landscaper’s family of refugees to stay with him if they didn’t feel safe?

Weighing each choice and alternatives,

He noticed the peeling bark of the elm tree and

How the white revealed a wound of red-orange.

He observed the eyes of the Aspen trunks staring at him

With no way of speaking a solution.

He noticed how the shape of the oak tree leaves

Were unlike any other.

He breathed deeply and reminded himself that,

As a tree takes decades to grow,

A decision can take a substantial time to make as well.

The problem with trees is actually a problem with humans.

We aren’t usually careful enough with our choices

Sometimes it’s our fault when the trees burn down.

All it takes is a mere moment of flippancy.

This man will walk for hours or

Days if he has to

Until he runs out of trees to

Inspire him to stop procrastinating

Then, he’ll look around in a state

Of both awe and horror

Unable to put another foot forward.

Measured by my index finger, the wavy leaves in this photo from top to bottom, are the tip to the knuckle.

The whale shark is the largest of all fish today and always. The largest one ever measured was nearly 62 feet, although the average is about 18 to 32 feet. The Georgia Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the U.S., is one of only five aquariums that have whale sharks and the only one in the United States.

Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?

Took me over to your house to meet your family

Introduce me to them, saying that you'd marry me

Then you'd look me in the eye and say, "It's just a joke"

Then you'd kiss me and I'd smile, did you even know?

When you'd say that kinda thing, I'd be excited

Got me hoping maybe one day you would mean it

Always thought I'd only make a fool of someone else

Now you've only gone and made me make one of myself

I guess that flowers aren't just used for big apologies

I guess I should've been more conscious how you spoke to me

'Cause when we'd fight, you'd give me space and not communicate

And for a while I thought that's what I should appreciate

Maybe I was holding onto what I thought you were

But when you think too hard, eventually it starts to hurt

The version of you in my head, now I know wasn't true

Young people fall for the wrong people, guess my one was you

I was getting any flight so we could make it work

You'd ignore me, coulda told me you were seeing her

Kinda hate myself for justifying your mistakes

Took a minute but I learned that shit the hard way

Who are you to tell me I can't be heartbroken?

Babe, you had the chance, the door for you was open

If it's what you need to tell yourself to sleep at night

Pretend I haven't found a man who finally treats me right

I guess that flowers aren't just used for big apologies

I guess I should've been more conscious how you spoke to me

'Cause when we'd fight, you'd give me space and not communicate

And for a while I thought that's what I should appreciate

Maybe I was holding onto what I thought you were

But when you think too hard, eventually it starts to hurt

The version of you in my head, now I know wasn't true

Young people fall for the wrong people, guess my one was you

If there's anything I've learned, it's you should watch yourself

If it's hurting you, then leave and go and get some help

A bee fly of the Bombyliidae family and this one is feeding on lavender flowers, measured about 6 or 7mm long, so really tiny.

Aoraki / Mount Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand. Its height since 2014 is listed as 3724m (12,218 ft), having earlier been measured at 3754m. It lies in the Southern Alps, the mountain range which runs the length of the South Island. A popular tourist destination, it is also a favourite challenge for mountain climbers.

Aoraki / Mount Cook consists of three summits lying slightly south and east of the main divide, the Low Peak, Middle Peak and High Peak, with the Tasman Glacier to the east and the Hooker Glacier to the west.

Struggled with the lighting on this one! Wanted to to show the edge of the bit the measuring tape was on whilst trying to keep the background as black as possible. But to achieve some highlights on the tape I had to do the opposite. Anyway, kind of turned out how I wanted it!

Just before capturing this shot, the ocean was violently pounding the rocky outcrop with wave after wave. And, a few birds were flying about looking for a place too perch. When the waves suddenly subsided and colors began to appear, one bird found an ideal place to roost. Its response to what had been otherwise violent was quite measured. Now peering out at the ocean and it's less harsh nature, the birds demeanour appeared more calm toward the nature of its surroundings.

I seriously cannot live without coffee. I would probably whither up and die if coffee suddenly became extinct. I. love. coffee. ...on my 2nd cup now. Cheers! HBW :)

Tarragona Amphitheatre is a Roman amphitheatre in the city of Tarraco, now Tarragona, in the Catalonia region of north-east Spain. It was built in the 2nd century AD, sited close to the forum of this provincial capital. The amphitheatre could house up to 15,000 spectators, and measured 130 by 102 metres.

With mists hanging over the open ground, the sun coming up on the horizon, and a herd of ponies ambling across the scene; I just had to find a high vantage point to set up the camera and enjoy the start to the day. (Note to Sir R – I believe that since the dawn (weak pun intended) of Enlightenment the start of the day has been set by the periodic rotation of the Earth on its axis, and not measured by the fullness of one’s bladder. Apart from the deepest parts of Derbyshire, where old pagan beliefs in the natural spirits are still strong).

The word “chronos”refers to measured, ticking, quantitative time. Chronos is the personification of time in pre-Socratic philosophy, Greek Mythology and later literature. He is the symbol of the eternal passage of time.

My warmest greetings for the New Year! Wishing you lots of love, happiness and champagne. Will be a pause in the gallery in 2025 but the journey is never ending. ...

Thank you very much for making 2024 an exciting year with your faves, comments and friendship. Wishing you a year full of blessings and happiness.

and big thanks to my dearest and kind friend 🌷Isa🌻 www.flickr.com/photos/evaevaevaeva/

for this wonderful poem that I will treasure and keep in time

To Foteini, Weaver of Light and Time

In the realm where Cronos bends the fleeting hour,

Foteini wields her camera, a boundless power.

Like the Titan shaping destinies unseen,

She captures life in frames, both raw and serene.

The gods whisper secrets to her nimble hand,

And mortal moments glow, divinely planned.

O artist of the cosmos, fearless and bright,

You tame the infinite, crafting worlds from light.

Where myths and muses blend, your visions soar,

Beyond Olympus, through time’s eternal door.

Foteini, your art, a hymn to life’s design,

Transforms the transient into the divine.

Leave room in your garden

For the fairies to dance, the cat’s meow

And the children to play

Hear the songs the breeze declares

By the moon’s shimmer glow

And the sun’s echo

Celebrate within your terrace

Weave your dreams by night and day

Know how to live

Hold fast

By all means

Dragonfly wings are sepcial in several respects.

Compared to other insect's wings they are rather thick, here I measured 2.3 microns (most other insects have wing-thickness between 0.1 ~ 1.0 microns!).

Due to this thickness, interference colors are not striking (since the reflection spectrum contains all spectral components, cf. the measurement here:

Reflection spectrum of a dragonfly-wing

The wings are NOT flat. In the lower part of the picture shown here, every other row is tilted, very much like in a fan. This structure massively increases the stiffness of the wing.

Abiqua Falls, 89 ft. high (measured). I have been to well over 600 waterfalls in my long life but Abiqua Falls ranks near the very top of the most beautiful falls I have ever been to. Of course I had seen many photos of this waterfall before, but nonetheless I was overwhelmed when I arrived here. It is truly magnificent.

Bentonitic clay concretions that measured between 6” and 10” across were found in a layer of the Lower Cretaceous Thermopolis Shale east of the Causeway on US 14A near Kane, Wyoming. Many of them had iron oxide stains. Most of the oxides were distributed in circular bands as seen here. Beneath the weathered surface the concretions are encased in black, organic rich, fissile shale.

20/20 vision means normal visual acuity, or the clarity of vision, measured at a distance of 20 feet. If you have 20/20 vision, you can see clearly at 20 feet what a person with average eyesight can see at 20 feet. This is often expressed as a fraction (\(20/20\)), where the top number is the distance the person is viewing and the bottom number is the distance at which an average person could see the same detail. It is a measure of vision sharpness, not a measure of perfect vision, as it doesn't account for other important visual skills.

Beyond 20/20: Extremely high visual acuity has been reported, such as 20/10 or even better. Some sources even mention a reported human vision of 20/5, which is comparable to the natural sight of eagles.

The world's best human eyesight is officially recognised in Guinness World Records as belonging to Veronica Seider, a German woman whose visual acuity was measured at 20 times better than average. She could identify people from over a mile away, and her vision was approximately 20/2 compared to the normal 20/20.

Thanks to my friend Phil pointing out that it's the colours of the Canadian flag, I've re-titled this photo to reflect that insightful observation.

Perhaps that's why the architects chose this bold red colour to clad the building and use white for the trim, along with huge cedar beams to support the roofs.

a life is not measured in grand gestures.

it is measured in kilos and cents.

in small numbers written in a worn ledger

at the end of a long day.

each number is a transaction, a conversation,

a small piece of the world that has passed

through these hands. there is no great drama here.

only the simple, profound arithmetic of a life's work.

and it all adds up.

I was in the process of taking a photo of a small boat against the backdrop of the setting sun. As a result, I photographed a seagull flying by, which obscured the boat. You can see the waves in the background.

To avoid oversaturating the sun, I measured the light using the “Highlights” exposure.

In the High Arctic, where isolation is measured not just in miles but in megahertz, aging satellite ground stations like this one—once lifelines to southern Canada via the ANIK satellite cluster—now represent a fragile tether to the outside world.

As infrastructure decays and signal reliability falters, communities face growing risks: delayed medical evacuations, disrupted weather data, and fractured emergency coordination. The problem is further exacerbated by a growing population and a greater reliance on high speed communication with the South.

The vulnerability isn’t just technical—it’s existential. In a region where climate, sovereignty, and survival intersect, the erosion of communications capacity threatens both resilience and autonomy. This station, nestled in snow and silence, is more than a relic—it’s a warning.

A serac (originally from Swiss French sérac) is a block or column of glacial ice, often formed by intersecting crevasses on a glacier. Seracs are found within an icefall, often in large numbers, or on ice faces on the lower edge of a hanging glacier. They are dangerous to mountaineers since they may topple with little warning. Even when stabilized by persistent cold weather, they can be an impediment to glacier travel.

The Aletsch Glacier (German: Aletschgletscher) or Great Aletsch Glacier (German: Grosser Aletschgletscher) is the largest glacier in the Alps. It has a length of about 23 km and covers more than 120 square kilometres in the eastern Bernese Alps in the Swiss canton of Valais.

The Aletsch Glacier is composed of three smaller glaciers converging at Concordia, where its thickness was measured by the ETH to be near 1 km. It then continues towards the Rhône valley before giving birth to the Massa.

Redcurrants from the garden, quite small, the row of six measured two and a quarter inches.

Just shy of 424 miles from Fremont, Nebraska, lies the tiny community of Whitney, NE. Measured via Long Pine, Valentine and Chadron, it takes a long time to get anywhere out here.

CNW predecessor Fremont & Elkhorn Valley built here in the 1880's. Over time, what became CNW's Western Division comprised about 800 miles among three states. Today, one-fourth of that remains. Most of those 205 miles witness only one or two trains daily.

Working from CNW timetable No.1 dated October 29, 1972, the train seen here would be about 13 hours behind schedule. Second class freight 319 would be westbound through Whitney around 1020 pm, mountain time. Today's train still keeps a schedule, but it's a much looser time frame. Operating only twice each week, with an overnight run from Rapid City, SD, to Dakota Junction, NE, is the RCP&E's freight to the BNSF interchange in Crawford, Nebraska. Upon arrival at Dakota Jct., the train is handed off the Nebraska Northwestern Railroad who takes it 20 miles to BNSF and return. Three SD40's and 25 cars comprise today's train, ambling along at 10mph.
