In the ghost town of Bannack Montana.

The George Meade Statue, Gettysburg National Military Park in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, USA.

The Hotel Meade in Bannock, Montana was originally constructed as a county courthouse in 1875. A few years later the county seat was moved and the structure became a hotel. The hotel has a reputation for being haunted by ghosts, particularly the ghost of Harry Plummer, the sheriff who was hanged by vigilantes in 1863. Seems odd a ghost would choose to haunt a building that was constructed years after he died, but then you never know what a ghost is going to do!

The hotel is flanked by a beautiful tree and also contains many beautiful windows.

CSX K371 eases through the mild central Florida hills with an empty wet rock train for Mosaic's Fort Meade Phosphate mine.

I previously shot this back in the summer. But, this is a more fitting setting.

Jupiter on July 20th. Seeing was above average with average transparency with a humid and hazy sky. The Great Red Spot (GRS) is shown crossing with a lot of turbulence following. The feature known as the "chimney" is shown to be open now. This feature is the bright broken area in the dark ring that surrounds the GRS. The "chimney" is located at the 1 O'clock position above the GRS. Image taken with ZWO ASI174MM camera and Meade 12inch LX200 scope.

Hiking along Meade Run in Allegheny National Forest and checking hemlock trees (tsuga canadensis) for Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA), a tiny, invasive insect that is detrimental to these beautiful trees. HWA was introduced to the US from Asia accidentally in the 1950's in Virginia, and has been wreaking havoc on hemlock trees in states like TN, VA, and NC to name a few. For nearly the last 10 years when I hike in the ANF or any other area I take a little extra time to check hemlock trees for HWA. I report my findings to the USFS or other agencies depending on where I am hiking. On this trip I checked around 30 hemlocks for HWA and found none.

At the Hotel Meade, which was originally built as a courthouse in 1875, there are numerous stories of ghostly activity. When Bannack lost its county seat status to nearby Dillon in 1881, the building sat vacant until 1890 when it was remodeled into a plush hotel. The hotel opened and closed sporadically through the years with the ebb and flow of mining activity. At one time the building acted in the capacity of a hospital.

Gettysburg National Military Park

This is my end of summer goal to be able to hike. It's just under 10k feet high, with a 2400' elevation hike. The trail is only 3 miles round trip, so it should be easy :)

House and farm originally owned by Jacob Meade near Nickelsville, Virginia

IC 1396 wide field from the backyard (Las Vegas Bortle 9). This is 45 hours and 15 minutes of exposure, my new record!

This was fun, the framing was really tight but just right with the Meade 70mm APO.

My OIII data looked terrible so I really wish I grabbed that from the desert, but I don't have the will to work on this again so maybe in a couple of years.

Imaged from my light-polluted backyard in the Niagara Region. So many re-processes, I finally ended up with this. As always, more time under darker skies would help. I blended some 10 second exposures of the core in.

Not sure how flickr picked up Canon 7D with the 300mm, I do own that camera and lens but this was definitely the Xsi through a telescope! lol

Meade LX90 8 inch SCT telescope ready for some Astrophotography tonight. We had just brought a ZWO 120 camera to capture some photos of the moon, planets, nebulas, and stars.

Meade Peak is the mountain in the center background. The mountain on the right looks higher, but only because it is closer to the camera. Meade Peak is the tallest mountain in Bear Lake County, Idaho and the second tallest mountain south of the Snake River in the state. It was named for General George Meade who was best known for defeating Robert E. Lee at the battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War.

The spiral staircase in the once plush Meade Hotel in Bannack Montana. The little mining camp was named for the Bannock Indians who frequented this area. The post office was established in November 1863 and when the name was submitted to Washington D. C. the "o" was inadvertently taken for an "a" creating the name Bannack.

Osprey migrating through the area, launching off a tree limb. Flew further than I expected to for it to dive for a fish.

The focus of this image is the pair of elliptical galaxies in the center of view, they are the large elliptical galaxy NGC 507 and the smaller one above is NGC 508. They are located 210 million light years away in the constellation of Pisces. NGC 507 is classified in the Arp Catalog as Arp 229, Galaxies with Concentric Rings. Looking closely at my image you can see the “ring” which Arp identified. There are so many galaxies in this image!

Fuji Color 200 is likely (?) discontinued and that's a real shame. This lovely, consumer-grade emulsion was probably the best C-41 film that Fuji ever produced.

Sometimes it can lean into the greens, or so I've heard. I've never had this issue myself.

Developing it in ECN-2 brings out the reds. Actually, it brings out everything. There's nothing really natural looking about this. But it relates the 'magic hour' look that was truly there on the day that I shot this. A normal emulsion like Portra wouldn't touch this. It would render the scene properly.

The desire to render a scene properly is a great reason to shoot digital. Not that film shouldn't be used to capture 'normal' stuff. I really don't care why or even if someone shoots film.

But the reason I shoot film is to develop it in ECN-2 and make the colors look how I felt. I could do that with digital too, of course - filters and effects have come a long way. But I don't want to. It's okay if you do.

Meade was ordered to take command of the Army of the Potomac just three days before the Battle of Gettysburg when General Joseph Hooker abruptly resigned. Before that Meade had been in command of the army’s Fifth Corps.
