Toronto, May 25, 2018 - Lara Setrakian is co-founder of Press Forward, an organization looking to improve newsroom culture in the wake of media-industry sexual harassment allegations—including her own against journalist Mark Halperin while at ABC News. She is also co-founder and CEO of News Deeply, a digital media company that mixes investigative reporting, expert analysis and community insights to create single-theme platforms that cover topics such as Syria, refugees and water. Setrakian was in conversation with Farah Nasser, anchor of Global News at 5:30 & 6. This event was a partnership with RTDNA Canada.

CAPE MAY – Author, professor and historian of contemporary American politics and culture, Natalia Mehlman Petrzela, Ph.D., will present her lecture, “Women and Children First?: #MeToo, #NeverAgain and The New Faces of American Activism,” on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 4 p.m. at Cape May Convention Hall, 714 Beach Ave. This is the seventh annual lecture in the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) Lessons of History Distinguished Lecture Series. The lecture will be followed by a meet-the-speaker reception at The Chalfonte Hotel, 301 Howard St.
Women and children, two segments often marginalized in American political discourse, are now leading nationwide conversations about gun control and sexual violence. From the ousting of sexual predators in the workplace to the outpouring of support for gun control by the survivors of the mass shooting in Parkland, Fla., American activism has powerful new voices and faces that are overwhelmingly young and female. Historically, women and young people have been grouped together as needful of protection and as less than full citizens. Our current moment witnesses a new era in which they are rightfully recognized as autonomous political actors shaping the national discourse. Professor
Petrzela will delve into the historical roots of this transformative activism and its implications for our collective future.
Petrzela is associate professor of history at The New School in New York City. An expert in 20th century American politics and culture, she is the author of “Classroom Wars: Language, Sex, and the Making of Modern American Culture,” (Oxford, 2015) and currently is working on a book about modern American fitness culture. Petrzela is a founding host of the popular “Past Present” history podcast, and regularly comments on the modern United States in the media in such highly regarded venues as The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Guardian, The History Channel and “The Brian Lehrer Show.” She holds a bachelor of arts degree in history from Columbia University and a master of arts degree and doctorate degree in history from Stanford University.
