During mating season, the Great Egret grows long wispy feathers that he fans and displays to any female who saunters by. This pair is standing in the nest they have started in the top of a tree.

 

"Plume hunters in the late 1800s and early 1900s reduced North American populations by more than 95 percent. The populations recovered after the birds were protected by law. No population is considered threatened, but the species is vulnerable to the loss of wetlands." allaboutbirds.org

One of these days I will invest in a decent photo editing programme other than the standard Microsoft Office as I know it would totally enhance these images.

 

I figured it was worth its own photo, considering the character of the structure and pride that its builders must have had in completing it nearly a century ago. Wonder what happened to the "O," though...
