Bones joins Kirk and Spock. QMX have done it again - this is a near-perfect little DeForest Kelley. I was a tad nervous after the initial official photos but any fears were totally misplaced.

McCoy Road can be a bit of a show for these loaded Lycon trains. After reaching the top of the 0.5% grade in the rock cut from my previous post, the tracks then dip down a 0.9% hill which bottoms out at Nine Springs Creek. Immediately past the bridge, it'll be a 1% pull up towards the Fitchburg area. The bridge over Nine Springs Creek has a 10 mph slow order on it, so you can't really gain any serious momentum coming down the 0.9% grade to help push you up the next hill. Added to that, it's 25 mph track after clearing the bridge. With the tail end just clearing the slow order and the majority of the train on the hill, engineer BAM has kicked on the sanders and grabbed a notch or two to get up to speed.
Lycon is the sole customer on this reactivated portion of the Reedsburg Subdivision. A couple times a week, sand and gravel from JS&G in Janesville is ferried up by T005 and shipped down to the Lycon facility on L469. These moves are seasonal however, lasting between mid-spring and mid-autumn. I didn't know this at the time of the chase, but this would be the last shipment this year.
This end of the Reedsburg can be a bit tricky to shoot. Typically, L469 will head down this way first thing in the morning. During the Spring and Summer, the sun is far to the north. By the time it swings around, the lighting can be a bit harsh. Mid-Autumn is the best time to shoot down here. But even then its tricky as as the morning shadows are much longer. Coupled with the irregularity of these moves, their seasonal nature, and complications of which way the locomotive is facing, it can be challenging to get a solid chase. Thankfully on this day, I got a tip from a couple of friends that L469 would be heading down to Oregon later in the day with a locomotive facing short-hood-forward.

The daily Cumberland to Hagerstown manifest crosses Green Spring Run at McCoys Ferry, MD on the former Western Maryland Railway "West Subdivision" main line. By this time, the West Subdivision was truncated west of the former B&O connection at Big Pool, and was designated by CSX as being part of the Lurgan Subdivision.

Shortly after sunrise near the small community of McCoy Oregon, the PNWR Westider works it's way north through fields of golden wheat. The Westsider makes an over night run from Whiteson to Albany and back serving what remains of the ex-SP West Side Line.
"A piece of my story that I think needs to get told is that broken crayons still color.
"So often we hear that there's this cycle of hurt, and hurt people hurt people, and if you came from something, you have to be a product of your environment.
"I do feel like, in a lot of ways, we are, whether you want to be or not. The people that raise you give you a bag, and they put things in it, and you carry those things with you, good or bad, for the rest of your life. But just because my dad struggled with addiction and just because my mom wasn't always there didn't mean that I had to be either of those things.
"I didn't have an example, a great example, of what love looked like all the time, but I did, right? I didn't have the Cosbys, but I had exactly what I needed to be who I needed to be. I think that part of my story is what I'd like to tell more of.
"Yeah, I came from brokenness, but I'm not broken."

The Hopper Custom has very little in common anymore with it's base McCoy. The Hopper was built with speed in mind from the very first.
So I had this idea from the start of using Mixels joints to put together a fun looking booster pack...I'd like to think I succeeded.
