My plan is to use the AVR Butterfly as a remote control console for driving Isorropos. The Butterfly is equipped with a 6-char LCD and tiny joystick. A program in the butterfly will read the joystick and send commands to the robot via the Maxstream radio modem, a companion to which will be attached to the MCU on the robot. By applying a small bias to the forward or backward tilt and the left or right wheel velocity I'll be able to drive the robot around while it is balancing. In theory, at least... :)

The modem board contains the 5v and 3.9v power supplies for the modem and AVR, and a MAX232 level shifter to raise the TTL signal levels of the modem to the RS232 levels on the Butterfly (which has a level-shifter built in).
The Arduino stack... That's a Liquidware Lithium Backpack at the bottom, then an Arduino Diecimila, Adafruit Proto-shield with a SparkFun XBee breakout board and an LZ-MaxSonar-EZ1

This replaces the RS232 tether to the controlling PC. The Zigbee chip is a Maxstream XB-24 "XBee Pro". The chip on the upper right is a MAX232 that converts CMOS/TTL signals to/from RS232.
Finished building my two Xbee kits and hooked them up to Arduinos. Had no problem at all configuring and getting them to send data.
The left one is the receiver, sending the incoming data to a computer via USB. The right one is the "wireless" transmitter; still tethered to the USB port because I couldn't find a battery to power it with.
At perfect conditions, the indoor range of these suckers are 30 meters (100 meter outdoors).
