What a situation... ;) Time for a 'moving sale'?

An old mattress left on the footpath of a suburban street. The council has already been and tagged it with hazard tape and a sign threatening a $5K fine. I suspect the dumper has already moved out of the area.

The rock was arranged for one of the future romantic session for a date, far from the eyes and in a simple and quiet place.

Photograph presented 180 degrees out to show shadow in wrong position

One week ago, Super Bowl Sunday, W9 drove us to a park near the Los Angeles Zoo. A Summer Tanager sighting had been reported.

In LA you gauge distances by time. Not by miles. Then factor in things like "Rush Hour" (ha ha. Rush Hour is any day any time) and if Dodger Stadium has a game and the typical ….stalled cars, a mattress in the fast lane, stuff like that. The park was not close but do-able.

Gratefully we've had some rain. The ground was soggy. My well-worn boots had so many holes in the sole and I put off the decision to repair them or toss them. But not the decision to wear them one more time.

We were there to get the rare tanager.

W9 walks over to me and says look at my shoes. And I do. They look really wet. And I glance at my tired trusty boots. They are soaked but I don't feel the wet and cold just yet, but I will. And soon. We continue to stomp around fighting the urge to complain about the wet and cold like the weasels we are but “man up” when we find another birder who has been sitting patiently scanning the trees with her binoculars (BTW which abbreviation do you prefer? Bins or Binocs?). She is blond and wears a red jacket. I am sure if she had a dog I could tell you his/her name and how old they are and what their favorite toy is... but her name escapes me.

Today we tried again. W9 and I had new waterproof footwear on. We had better light and new energy. We struck up a quick bond with Amir, also looking for the colorful rare bird. Marylou and daughter Emma joined us. And the blond in red was there too. I saw her pointing and gesturing to Amir who had his camera raised and ready. She is the reason I am posting this photo today. She didn't have a camera but said she could look at ebird postings and find the photo or the link to the photo we post. And then she could show her friends this beautiful, incredible, and rare visitor.

I couldn't let her down.

This was taken at sunrise on the summit of A'Mhaighdean (3,173 ft), looking NW towards Ruadh Stac Mòr, Sgùrr Bàn and Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair (Left to Right). Snow wasn't expected on the summit, but it made for perfect photographic conditions, except from the strengthening wind that morning. We judged the temperature to have been around -10deg overnight, inside our tent the water froze, but we were all fairly well prepared with winter down bags and thermal air mattresses.

We’ve had a vegan, natural latex mattress for the last seven years and in the past few years, we weren’t that happy with it. After doing some research, we decided to replace it with one from Avocado because the reviews were terrific (www.avocadogreenmattress.com). They’re also organic, all natural, handmade in the USA, and the company is carbon negative plus gives 1% back to environmental nonprofits.

Even more, they give you a one year trial (costing you nothing if you decide it’s not for you) and a 25 year warranty.

Our first impression of it is very good. Hazel was the first to sleep on it and gave her approval, which means a lot to us because she can be quite the tough critic!

Sleeping has become nearly as expensive as photography.

hilarious and awkward moment this morning: already 80 degrees at 7 a.m. and sticking to the alleys for shade while walking the dogs - I hear someone say "good morning" - not sure where the voice was coming from or if it was intended for me. Then I see a sleeper sofa under a carport - a man under some sheets - it was like he set up his bedroom outside - complete with nightstand. He tried to guess the breeds of our 3 dogs and acted like this was a perfectly normal social interaction. Just when you've think you've seen it all....

Not much comfort in those mattresses after long days in the cane fields.

This company, founded in 1926, still exists but manufactures its mattresses only in BC. Tax Assessment information suggests that the building is owned by CNR railroad and is located on "contaminated soil." It is taxed as a "warehouse."
