Sawara-no-Taisai Aki Matsuri Festival, Katori, Chiba Pref. The festival, which has a 300-year history, is designated as one of the National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Assets. It features a parade of 12 beautifully sculptured floats with huge dolls on tops from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The festival's highlight is when all the floats get together, and Sawara-bayashi (festival music) is demonstrated on the floats from 6 p.m. on the 8th.

Temporary Limited Express Sawara Aki Matsuri-Go on the JR Narita Line leaves JR Shinjuku Sta. at 8:49 a.m. for JR Sawara Sta.

For returning to Tokyo, the train departs from JR Sawara Sta. at 3:57 p.m. (arrival time at JR Shinjuku Sta.: 5:54 p.m.) on Oct. 8th and 9th.

The Narita Taiko matsuri is one of the three biggest Japanese drumming festivals (the others being the Matsumoto Taiko matsuri and Earth Celebration held on the island of Sado).

Held every April, it brings together some of Japan's best amateur taiko groups, many of which are school teams.

Being chosen to play at the festival brings huge prestige to the school and the competition to be one of the select few to participate is fierce in the extreme...

MATSURI

Tokyo holds many festivals (matsuri) throughout the year. Major festivals include the Sanno Festival at Hie Shrine, and the Sanja Festival at Asakusa Shrine. The Kanda Matsuri in Tokyo is held every two years in May. The festival features a parade with elaborately decorated floats and thousands of people. Annually on the last Saturday of July, an enormous fireworks display is held over the Sumida River and it attracts over 1 million viewers.
