Mandelbrot set near c=-1.747+0.005i.

Topography maps of Titan based on the data in Lorenz et al. "A global topographic map of Titan" Icarus 225 (2013) 367–377.

The maps are based on small strips of Cassini radar observations that have been interpolated with splines; the real topography is of course more fractal. The elevations are fairly flat, with higher regions at the sub- and anti-saturnian points.

Zoom of the Mandelbrot set around a point projected so that the distance to the point forms a logarithmic scale. Details on the left edge are ~10^15 times smaller than on the right edge.

The rightmost black blob in the pictures is the main "continent" of the set. Satelite sets of different sizes can be seen linked by fractal chains of varying complexity.

The colors are set using the distance estimator method.

Here I color the Mandelbrot set based on the orbit of the points: each step adds red if it has negative real part, green if it has positive imaginary part and blue if it is outside the circle |z|=2/3. Each iteration contributes exponentially less, resulting in a color mixture.

It nicely fills in the "aura" close to the set.

A map close to a Misiurewicz point.

Section through the Mandelbrot-Julia set, defined as the points (z,c) in C^2 where z_{n+1}=z_n^2+c does not diverge for z_0=z. This section corresponds to real c. The color denotes the magnitude of the smallest iterate.

Note the soft flat face, corresponding to the Julia set c=0.25 which suffers an implosion when c is increased, turning into rays of Fatou dust.

Note how the stripes form a rather small region on the border to the boring homogeneous domain; the dimples are even harder to find.

"Mandelbrot set" for the map zn+1=Mi(zn)2, where Mi(z) are three Möbius transforms cyclically applied after each other. The transforms are -1/z, (-0.43-i)/((3-.1i)z - i), (wz-i)/(iz+.3+.1*i) where w is used as the control parameter varying across the images. z starts from zero, and the location after 300 iterations derermines the color (angle determines hue, magnitude value).

"Mandelbrot set" of the map zn+1=M(zn) where M(z) = (exp(.3*i+.5)z + w)/(exp(i*3.3-.3)z + exp(.3*i)), a simple Möbius transformation. The color of the pixels denote where in the complex plane zero ends up.

The fact that the usual Mandelbrot set shows up is not too odd - the map does involve a translation and a squaring. But changing M to other Möbius transforms warp it to all sorts of other fractals.

The movement of the "economic centre of gravity" across history.

The centre was calculated by taking the Maddison historical economy dataset and calculate the GDP-weighted average of the country locations (taken from the Nationmaster database). This point is located inside the Earth, so it was projected radially onto the surface and plotted.

Swedish Ambassador to Bangladesh H E Charlotta Schlyter, Ms Carin Zetterlund, First Secretary/Deputy Head of Development Section and Ms Lena Nordström, Head of Staff MoFA visited icddr,b’s Matlab field site - one of the developing world’s richest, most comprehensive and longest-running data resources.

The guests visited icddr,b health and demographic data collection facilities, ongoing studies in the villages, the Matlab hospital, especially providing services for women and children and a mother care unit.

The guests also took a boat ride to Matlab, using the same route once taken by hundreds of thousands of cholera patients from remote areas to reach icddr,b’s floating hospital on a barge, which now remains parked at Matlab, bearing witness to the history of humanitarian efforts.
