Samantha was introduced to corrosion at a young age and has been fascinated by corrosion science ever since. Today she is earning a PhD in materials science.
Hongling Lott (left) and Eric Colegrove (right), researchers in the Materials, Chemical, and Computational Sciences (MCCS) directorate at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), discuss their work in front of the CdTe Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) in the Science and Technology Facility (S&TF) in Golden, Colorado.
The CdTe MBE enables researchers to do highly controlled material science experiments primarily for CdTe based photovoltaics (PV) at a lab scale. The ultra-high vacuum (UHV) environment coupled with highly controlled deposition sources allow researchers to grow single crystal thin-films epitaxially which is used as “model systems” to better understand commercially relevant polycrystalline thin-films. The tool helps inform production scale processing and enable higher efficiency CdTe PV devices and modules.
