ABOUT THE WORK
Spanish tradition also has it that Santiago el Mayor/Saint James the Great appeared in an epic battle between the Christians and the Moors on a white horse, holding a flag, and brandishing a sword to help the Christians slay the Moors. Hence, the (politically–incorrect) title: “Santiago Matamoros” (“James the slayer of the Moors”). The Battle of Clavijo in 834/844 AD was mythical but the Second Battle of Albelda in 859 AD on which Clavijo was loosely–based was historical. Ramiro I of Asturias’ son and successor Ordono I and Garcia Iniguez of Pamplona crushed Musa ibn Musa al– Qasawi and his army. The Asturias victory gave rise to the centuries–old cult of “Santiago Matamoros” in the Iberian peninsula and became the foundation of Catholic Spanish identity. The great shrine of “Santiago de Compostela” and the continuing worldwide popularity of the “El Camino de Santiago” pilgrimage are testaments to that.
