This story began a couple years ago with this photo. The lovely Sally Monster never tasted caramel-apple candy corn so I made a mental note to send some to her the following year when it was in the stores again.

Fast forward to last fall. I noticed the "autumnal" goodies while shopping and picked up an extra bag for Sally. I was all ready to mail them off to England, but Sally was on her way to the U.S. and I didn't have her address in the states.

Fast forward again to last week. Everytime I opened the pantry, I would see the hefty bag of noms and think of Sally. I knew that I couldn't send them to her with last years date on the package, so after resisting temptation for a year, I finally caved and decided to turn them into cookies and call them "Sally Monsters."

I thought the chewy candy corn would bake like chocolate chips... I was sadly mistaken!

The aroma of brown sugar, fresh apples and sweet candy called me back to the kitchen for a looksee before they were done baking. I excitedly opened the oven only to find what looked like golden-brown cookies in a pool of blood! The candy corn seperated from the cookies and covered the entire bottom of the cookie sheet with bubbling hot redness.

Zombie BuNnY MoNsTeR, Donna B. Dead must have heard me shriek with horror. (not beacuse of what looked like a Betty Crocker autopsy, but because, hey... I'm supposed to be a chef, damn it!) Donna left her cozy hiding spot on the bookshelf, (behind Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned) looked at me and with an expression of insanity and inquisitiveness, and exclaimed, "brainz?!"

"No, not brainz" I replied, but she devoured half of them before I could explain. So... while I may have failed miserably as far as creating a new recipe, I succeeded in getting Donna's mind off brainz and into cooking. Or so I thought...

Now she's hanging out on the kitchen bookshelf around Julia Childs' Mastering the Art of French Cooking, studying page 408; Ris de Veau et Cervelles...

Aka "Sweetbreads and Brains."

Mastering the art of focusing (using a reversed lens + extension tubes!)

The challenge for Our Daily Challenge group today is "art". Now I figured photography actually is a form of art. People print them and put them on their wall….. So that counts as art in my book! Photography enables as much creative expression as any other form of art - just take yesterday's "blur" challenge - there were so many different interpretations!

So this is my take on photography as art:

1. I am "mastering the art" of photography, and more specifically in this case - insect macro photography. (I reckon the anatomy of these bugs is a work of art too, but that's another story).

2. There is a definite ART to manually focusing a lens mounted backwards, with 3x macro tubes, with a small insect which jumps around and a breeze which wants to blow every 3 seconds. Every minute movement effects the focus 10x more than in normal, non-reversed mode. So - focusing on this little critter requires a lot of patience, a bit of practice to get the art down!

3. There are some bright arty colours?!

Ha ha. This is almost SOOC - watermark and about 10% cropped off the frame, just to put Mr. Bug in a nicer position in the frame.

PS - for anyone interested in the set up, I use one identical to Kelday's set up in this image. Kelday's macros are pretty inspiring too, so check them out!

They looked like a Betty Crocker autopsy, but they tasted pretty good. ;~)P
