The young Lieutenant breathed a sigh of relief, 30 more seconds and he would be back in the air...
Lt Dumas had been daydreaming at the stick, not watching the gas gauge. Suddenly, the engine of his P-26 Pea Shooter sputtered and he had to find a place to land, quickly. Lady Luck offered a clearing by the lake and the young pilot gratefully accepted. Luck was on his side again when the nearest farm house turned out to have a phone! Lt. Dumas contacted the nearby civilian field and they sent out a truck with gas.
The motor roared back to life and the lieutenant thought to himself, “OH please, let no one notice I am late…Oh please, I just might get away with this yet…”
That was when his luck ran out. He spotted an Army Staff car out of the corner of his eye and even over the roar of the engine he could hear Major Blarney cursing him and all his unborn children.

The Boeing P-26 Pea Shooter was the USA’s first all metal mono-wing fighter. They were the core of the US Army Air Corp, fighter strength throughout the 1930s and were exported to Spain, China and the Philippines. Pilots loved them but they were no match for the German and Japanese planes they ended up facing.
This is a forced perspective photograph of 1/24 and 1/25 Philippine mahogany and die-cast scale model vehicles in front of a real background.
