The stunning view east into Malealea Valley from Gates of Paradise towards Thaba Putsoa Mountains across valley of Makhaleng River. Malealea Lodge and village is in shadows in upper left of this shot. Taken just before 6pm after leisurely drive from Maseru. This was heaven for 4-5 days after euphoria of World Vision visit of previous day. Children in this valley eke out a basic existence but demonstrate friendliness and loyalty. They showed me around village including local HIV Aids compound where I met lady attending to cooking, growing vegetables, etc. I repaid both of them - Leluma & Poseka - by fitting them out with school clothing so they could attend local college. We drove to Mafeteng to get shoes shorts and shirts. Uniforms are mandatory prerequisite for school attendance. Paid their school fees for a few months to get them off to a good start. I hope they are still there. This whole visit was a reality check like no other. If only people in Australia & elsewhere knew how lucky they are.

Meandering Caledon River forms the northwest international border of Lesotho with South Africa. On my afternoon flight to Johannesburg from Maseru we passed almost directly over Ficksburg. The border crossing over the Caledon River bridge at Ficksburg to Maputsoe is clearly visible from high above in lower left corner of this view. The industrial area of Maputsoe sits astride the main A1 highway in mid-picture heading north through Lesotho passes towards top left of photo on far side of river towards the Leribe district & Maluti Highlands stretch away into the hazy east in background.
