“Cowardice asks the question, 'Is it safe?' Expediency asks the question, 'Is it politic?' Vanity asks the question, 'Is it popular?' But, conscience asks the question, 'Is it right?' And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because one's conscience tells one that it is right.”

I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality... I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.

I've been remiss in commenting and posting—so many senators and representatives to write and such draining enthusiasm these past four years. Dreadful times here with a racist leader and his disregard for covid.
We honor/honour Martin Luther King Jr. on January 18 (today here). King became the most visible and vital spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. Struggles continue.

This image is my tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. Day in America. The many colored leaves and varieties of trees remind me of the different colors, shapes and sizes we all are. None more or less unique or beautiful. None superior or inferior to each other. All creating a wonderful symphony of tones that salute the beauty of the physical universe and the Creation we are all a part of. Our respects to Dr. King, his memory and his dream.

Infuse your life with action. Don't wait for it to happen. Make it happen. Make your own future. Make your own hope. Make your own love. And whatever your beliefs, honor your creator, not by passively waiting for grace to come down from upon high, but by doing what you can to make grace happen... yourself, right now, right down here on Earth. A year ago at Christmas, I photographed this Brant and once again on New Year's this year. He/she has been around for about a year and a half. We usually see it in the sunlight so you don't get the beautiful black color often.
We went out to do a little more testing of my camera yesterday. Not much happening but right before we left as luck would have it, I had a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk pretty much land right in front of me in the shaded picnic area. It paused for a few minutes looking around for a meal, jumped up on the picnic table and then flew off to a nearby pole. Nice for me! Elliot was farther back on the trail distracted by planes...he eventually got a couple shots

Who will Win the Nobel Peace Prize ?
We didn't know then and there was no shoo-in candidate in 2016;the only thing I knew was that there were air strikes in Aleppo and fighter jets and helicopters dropping barrel bombs, phosphorus and chlorine ; how ironic while awaiting the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize ...
My own humble Peace Prizes went to the "White Helmets",an all-volunteer team known as the Syrian Civil Defense on the front lines rescuing civilians caught up in the carnage of the country's five-year war.Daring their efforts, they have saved more than 60,000 people in Syria.
And,to the Aegean Islanders, the inhabitants of Greek islands who have rescued drowning refugees and helped those who reach the shore.Just ordinary people, with no order from above, respecting tradition and acting out of sheer hospitality and solidarity. What they did and do shows the best of humanity in the simplest way.
On 27 November 1895, Alfred Nobel signed his last will and testament, giving the largest share of his fortune to a series of prizes, the Nobel Prizes. As described in Nobel's will, one part was dedicated to "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations and for the abolition or reduction of standing armies.

"Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the US,held on the third Monday of January. He won the Nobel Peace Prize 1964 ... In his acceptance speech he said that : "Peace is more Precious than Diamonds or Silver or Gold, sooner or later All the People of the World will have to discover a way to live together in Peace ... "
* And to Mankind's Struggle for a Lasting Peace.

Fancy scientific names for Tropical Kingbird on Flannel Bush.
The last of the TRKI at MLK. My only wish would have been that the Flannel Bush was fully in bloom. It has beautiful yellow flowers but the only flowers that were blooming that day were deep inside and they are the color of the kingbird's breast.

I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law.
Martin Luther King Jr.
Friday was such an upsetting news day that we had to get out of the house. I had been cautious about not carrying my camera to aggravate my mid back strain but we just HAD TO GO. I didn't care that the time of day and tide were not the best, but it was a relief to get to the birds, any birds.... The highlight was seeing a few Elegant Terns hunting at Arrowhead Marsh. We also saw three different Cottontail Rabbits which is always a treat because they are so cute.
Major troubled times are ahead and unfortunately NOT behind us. We need to take all the care we can to get through it.
We need to all fight for our children to grow up in a world where racism is not prevalent, where lives are not limited and where people are truly judged on their character and not the color of their skin. It boggles my mind sometimes how far from Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream we still are. We have a congress that wants to take away health care, some of these same congressman are saying they honor Martin Luther King Jr. today even though King said, “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
And we have a president who says the most racist things that one can possibly imagine any political leader ever saying. Where does that leave us in the world today? That leaves us, no matter what our race is, to not be silent and to be vocal in the streets. We must stand up for this next generation of beautiful children to have access to a quality public education, to quality health care, to highly skilled jobs, to in all accounts the pursuit of happiness, to an environment that has stabilized and to liberty.
Sometimes, it is really difficult for me, even though I am white, to not despair myself. I feel like our nation has taken steps backwards not forwards with Trump and all the beautiful children I help, regardless of race, I want them to have a life that entails all of these things. But, I also truly believe that if King were alive today, he would encourage people to not give up the fight. We have to remember, as Americans, our country is only worthwhile if we fight for the best it can be and can offer all of our immigrants and citizens both.
Dr. King also said, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." We should all make an effort to be kinder, to listen to each other, to be compassionate and to reveal insight and light as a counter to arguments that support discrimination. We are at a time when we all have to fight for human rights. Protests were even less popular during Martin Luther King's time period and he gave his life fighting for justice. Let us be inspired by his bravery not just today but in all days going forwards.
