In April I built Mario in a Kart and Yoshi on a bike to place on a 16x16 street vignette for a collaborative street display and contest. But the small format was a bit too crowded to make a proper scene out of it, so for displaying at Paredes de Coura in Portugal and Brickworld in Chicago in June, I decided to build a larger scene for them, including my Lakitu as well (with a camera this time) and a Piranha Plant built for the occasion.
This also scored a nomination for "best vignette" at Brickworld!
The Piranha plant especially was quite challenging, as I needed it to scale with my other characters, and be in the same style.
While the stairs might be 90 degree drops, people who played Star Road on Mario Kart 64 know that with enough acceleration, you can skip over the lower portion of a downhill slope. With that said, Mario and Yoshi use that technique to go all the way downstairs, but Yoshi once again turns too wide and Mario takes the lead once again!

Looks like Mario Kart is back. All the riders are very happy. They run in front of me waving their hands.
Sherbet Land is actually Spray Lakes first of all.
When I first got this Donkey Kong Kart... I immediately thought "Sherbet Land" which is one of the only winter levels in the Mario Kart game franchise. This happens to be one of my favourites thus far with this particular prop haha.

More Mario! This time actually Mario, in a kart! Because Mario Kart is awesome. This kart is modelled after one of the Mario Kart 8 karts.

Built for the category "Small Scale" of BrickNerd's Adorabuild contest.
Having some heavy rain and completing most of the housework tasks I found sometime in front of the PC.
I grabbed the shot of my son yesterday, as taking his Go-kart, was part of the deal for us to go out "walking".
I liked the way he was in mid turn and how I was directly behind him (which reminded of some 80's racing game sprite). Even when I took the shot I thought I would use it in a composite where I've tried to make it look like he was drifting out of the bend; of course how could he get that sort of speed in just a simple kid's Go-kart :-)
LSB 2025-2
A small 1-day build as part of a series of bikes to commemorate my favourite discontinued contest, LSB.
For this, I took a lot of visual cues from the Yoshi bike in mariokart. While not my bike of choice, it has a great aesthetic, so I was pleased when a set depicting it released albeit at a larger scale.
I made this quite a while ago, as part of a shipment of bikes for Bricking Bavaria 2023, but never sent it as it was less likely to survive the trip.
And yeah, I'm aware the photo is grainy.
Mario Kart in the streets of Tokyo near Harajuku! That's Mario in the front, closely followed by Princess Peach. I saw Luigi and Bowser too. What a scene... the kind of random thing that Tokyo delivers! I was watching out for the red shell, but nothing that untoward happened. We talked with a Japanese friend about these Mario Kart races around downtown... he lowered his head and said, quite seriously, "Yes. Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, an augmented reality dark ride opened in Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023. Guests ride four-seat tracked “karts,” attach AR visors, and fire virtual Koopa Shells at Team Bowser characters across scenes based on Mario Kart 8 courses. Coordinated steering triggers drift bonuses, and point totals determine whether Team Mario or Team Bowser wins. The queue is themed as Bowser’s Castle with preshows led by Lakitu.
Universal Studios Hollywood's Super Nintendo World, located in the park's Lower Lot, opened in 2023. The themed land transforms the aesthetics of classic Mario games into a physical, interactive environment using blocky geometries, kinetic animated elements, and augmented-reality gameplay. The land centers on Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge inside Bowser’s Castle and extends outward through multi-level paths, coin-collecting challenges, and Power-Up Band interactions.
Universal Studios Hollywood, opened in 1964 on the historic Universal lot, blends an active film studio with a theme park built around Universal’s film and television properties. Spread across Upper and Lower Lots linked by the Starway escalators, it offers views of working soundstages alongside attractions that use sets, animatronics, motion simulators, and practical effects. The signature Studio Tour moves through real backlot streets and production areas, while themed lands, dining, and retail spaces extend Universal’s storytelling across the property.
With the release of Mariokart 8 Deluxe approaching, I've been thinking about what a Smash for Nintendo Switch would look like and what characters I'd like to see join!
