Trumpete - Marcio Montarroyos

21/09/1992

Yesterday I posted an album by Steve Grossman, where I wrote that he was part of the trio #StoneAlliance with percussionist Don Alias and bassist Gene Perla in the late 1970s, and that this group had released four albums in that period, including this one with the Brazilian trumpeter #MárcioMontarroyos.

Stone Alliance was a newly formed group of three well-known musicians who organized world tours and new recordings. Stone Alliance was dedicated to the creative force in many styles of music including jazz, Afro-Cuban, rock, and pop.

Márcio Montarroyos (8 July 1948 – 12 December 2007) was a Brazilian jazz trumpet player.

Starting his studies with classical piano, he later went to trumpet and jazz. In the 1970s, he traveled to the US to study at Berklee School of Music. In 1988, the Swiss TV invited Montarroyos to produce two one-hour concerts together with the German guitar player Sigi Schwab, bassist Marc Egan, percussionist Freddie Santiago and drummer Guillermo Marchena. In 1992, the German TV network ZDF invited him, together with Sigi Schwab, to play live concert. In the same year both artists played at the Munich Studio 2000+2

This is my first LP post for 2025, starting with the greatest of all named Arthur Verocai, and mentioning that I was lucky enough to see him perform live last year with our Metropole Orchestra in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdamm, an unforgettable best live performance, there ain't no other!

Saudade Demais is an open declaration of love for Rio de Janeiro and Bossa Nova. The lyrics in most of these songs paint a musical scene of that marvelous city. With that inspiration, nothing goes wrong. The guest musicians in the album augment Verocai’s amazing guitar playing and exceptional songwriting skills. Here we find Raul de Souza (trombone), Marcio Montarroyos (trumpet), Toninho Horta (acoustic guitar), Robertinho Silva (drums), Cristovão Bastos (piano), Luiz Alves (bass) and the wonderful voice of Sanny Alves singing the fascinating lyrics in the album. Alves is a great performer who feels quite at ease with Verocai’s music.

🔥 Brazilian Jazz Countdown: 'Flame' by Azymuth – A Rare Japanese Gem 🔥

As we continue our countdown toward the much-anticipated early morning with Hermeto Pascoal—Tuesday at 7:00 AM sharp—today we’re turning up the heat with a true vinyl treasure: 'Flame' by Azymuth, showcased here in its stunning Japanese pressing, complete with obi strip and insert.

Released in 1984, Flame captures Azymuth at their jazz-funk peak—sophisticated, soulful, and sonically rich. But what makes this album glow even brighter is the presence of two Brazilian legends who bring extra layers of brilliance.

✨ Flora Purim appears on the track 'The Textile Factory' (Fábrica De Tecidos), co-written with bassist Alex Malheiros. Her voice floats effortlessly over the rhythmic architecture, transforming the track into something otherworldly and hypnotic.

🎺 On the title track 'Flame', Marcio Montarroyos steps in on trumpet and absolutely shines. His phrasing, tone, and lyrical touch elevate the composition into a truly cinematic experience. And speaking of Marcio—if you know his powerful collaboration on the album 'Marcio Montarroyos / Stone Alliance', you already understand the depth he brings. That self-titled record, which I also happen to own in a Japanese edition, is a serious jazz-fusion heavyweight—raw, spiritual, and electric.

So whether you’re discovering Flame for the first time or returning to it with fresh ears, let it guide you further into the soul of Brazilian fusion. More treasures to come as we keep the groove going right up to Hermeto’s sunrise set.

🌞 See you tomorrow for the next chapter in the countdown.
