Not a ladybird which might have been a slightly more appropriate "supermodel" for International Women's Day because of its name, but an equally pretty Cryptocephalus bipunctatus. The whole supermodel thing is a relic of the past anyway, but unfortunately, we still haven't freed ourselves from questionable beauty "ideals" that often come across as beauty dictates. Social media and "influencers" don't make it any easier, especially not for the younger generation that is exposed (and exposes itself) to what one might call the "daily dose of beauty brainwash", recently taken to the next level with the all-new "beauty filters".
In Berlin (and in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, one of Germany's Northern federal states), March 8 is an official holiday, but not (yet?) in the other 14 of our 16 federal states. So this Wednesday – where all shops, schools, etc. are closed (and the weather is too ghastly to go outside – winter made a snowy-wet, cold reappearance) – feels like a very quiet, lazy Sunday, and I have too much time for writing rants instead of simply letting you enjoy this adorable, brightly orange beetle, a member of the so-called "Fallkäfer" (Cryptocephalinae) subfamily of the leaf beetle family. The name "Fallkäfer" (a beetle that falls or drops) derives from their distinctive habit of dropping abruptly when disturbed. This image also is a true oldie, I've taken it back in June 2017 at the beautiful public park Britzer Garten. The focus is ever so slightly off and more on the plant than on the beetle itself, but I think it's still sharp enough in general.

I was used to see my Amaryllis* plant blooming 2 symmetrical flowers, one opposite to the other. This time it blossomed three and the third and last (in the middle) just flowered this morning.
*Correct botanical name of these flowers above: Hippeastrum (genre Amaryllis).
Shot today in manual modality, in natural in-door noon light with my glorious Fujifilm XS-1 and its potent hyperzoom Fujinon lenses 624, an almost vintage camera exemplair bought last year pristine in box from the collection of a photographer. A great camera, a little complex as it's needed every time a manual set up and equalization of colours but apt to give true tones and such detailed textures in the things photographed that usually escape to the eye sight.

Nellie McClung was one of the “Famous 5,” a group that included Emily Murphy, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Louise Crummy McKinney and Irene Parlby. In 1927, the five activists petitioned the Supreme Court (Canada) to have women declared “qualified persons” who were eligible for public office as senators. Although the Supreme Court decided against the petitioners in 1928, the British Privy Council overturned the decision the following year and officially declared women “persons,” remarking that the exclusion of women from all public offices was “a relic of days more barbarous than ours.”

Inspired by the sight of David Bowie's producer-engineer Tony Visconti embracing his lover by the Berlin Wall, the song tells the story of two lovers, one from East and one from West Berlin. Bowie's performance of "'Heroes'" on 6 June 1987, at the German Reichstag in West Berlin has been considered a catalyst to the later fall of the Berlin Wall. Following his death in January 2016, the German government thanked Bowie for "helping to bring down the Wall", adding "you are now among Heroes".
"'Heroes'" has received numerous accolades since its release, including inclusion on lists of the greatest songs of all time; Rolling Stone named the song the 46th greatest ever, and NME named it the 15th greatest. Bowie scholar David Buckley has written that "'Heroes'" "is perhaps pop's definitive statement of the potential triumph of the human spirit over adversity"
This pandemic times, and being tomorrow/today the International Woman's Day, I would like to dedicate this photo to all the women that have been heroines, the school teachers, the janitors, the policewomen, the food delivery women, the people working at pharmacies, the lab technicians, all the women that have to work outside despite all the restrictions, the single mothers and the wives that need to have extra patience with all the kids in the house, all of you that make this life more beautiful, all the nurses and all my fellow colleagues and all the health workers, specially, my wife, all the ambulance drivers, all the girls that had to sacrifice their happiness in the parks in order to stop the spread of the disease, and finally, all the people that uses mask everyday.

I like big words and big ideas told about women for women and by women.However, I mostly think of the average woman, the invisible hero, the woman with depression , who - at the same time -must dodge and embrace her own mental illness , her own inner monsters and cope with her life in so many difficult and different levels.
