Today we played our own Venice episode of The Amazing Race. We created a list of challenges after breakfast, set off for Venice at 10:30 am to accomplish them and were the first and final team to reach our checkpoint back at the Villa around 11:15 pm. The water shuttles were a bit confounding but we have a good understanding of the different lines now that we have used them all day to plot the most efficient routes around the islands. Our challenges included locating and visiting the inside of the huge church at Salute (at the mouth of the Grand Canal), finding two bookstores that Evi had given us directions to, to ask about a particular Venetian cookbook, finding the Hard Rock Cafe Venice, finishing Matteo's souvenir shopping for family plus something special for himself (which he accomplished in about 20 mins in Venice and 20 minutes back in Murano, quite impressive and he found great bargains on locally handmade items - attaboy!! we also had challenges to climb the Rialto bridge and take pics of ourselves w Detroit tigers cap, go on a gondola ride, find someplace along a canal serving sea bass and lobster for dinner, and finally checking in at the checkpoint so we could pack for tomorrow's departure for Munich. All challenges completed! It was exciting to see Matteo take the map in hand, decipher it using major landmarks and lead the way through the streets and canals of Venice. He has great navigational instincts and with this newfound confidence (after only two days in Venice I might add) he's unstoppable!
Our favorite part of today was a relaxing gondola ride through the canals of Venice, we were both on the grand canal as well as many back canals where we were the only thing afloat. The gondolier did a great job gliding us past lots of buildings that were in famous movies so Matteo was loving every minute of that, of course. He was excited to experience a 'once in a lifetime' gondola ride but we are already talking about what we would do next time and who we would bring on the gondola with us (seats five). We think Bachan should come to Venice and do a different gondola ride every day, with different combinations of people in our family joining her on these daily excursions!
A lamp I made from an old National Geographic map of Brazil. It uses a single 12" long cold cathode lamp and runs on 12 VDC.
Map Postcards had their own charm, not all that useful for finding directions but often nicely coloured with visual appeal and interest.

I always get lost in the Technodrome in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles NES game. And once I find my way, I get owned by the astronauts. But it's a nice map, I think. One reason I draw my own maps is because looking at a ROM-captured map can be hard to see exactly what the paths are because there's so much detail in the foregrounds and backgrounds. Sometimes my maps of paths are single lines (like Metroid and Aria of Sorrow) and sometimes they're outlined hallways like this. The hallway look is easier to follow, but harder to draw. The proportions keep getting messed up.
This irreverent map of the United States was first drawn in 1936 by Daniel K. Wallingford. Later artists would do similar satirical renditions (including a famous New Yorker cover in 1976); previous artists were more socio-politically themed. The date of this particular printing is not specifically verified, but is believed to be a 1937 reprint.
