These contour maps are simple to make - you need a function that takes two arguments (say x and y) and returns a third value (say z), which defines the location of that point on a colour map. If you get the function and the colour scheme right, you can get attractive abstract patterns.

This function is something like sin(x) * tan(y) = z.

The "Woodcut" map of London, formally titled Civitas Londinum, and often referred to as the "Agas" map of London, is one of the earliest true maps (as opposed to panoramic views, such as those of Anton van den Wyngaerde) of the City of London and its environs. The original map probably dated from the early 1560s, but it survives only in later and slightly modified copies. It was printed from woodcut blocks on eight sheets, and in its present state measures approximately 2 feet 4 inches (71 cm) high by 6 feet (180 cm) wide. (There has been some damage to the blocks, and it was probably originally fractionally larger.)

The Woodcut map is a slightly smaller-scale, cruder and lightly modified copy of the so-called "Copperplate" map, surveyed between 1553 and 1559, which, however, survives only in part. It also bears a close relationship to the map of London included in Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum, published in Cologne and Amsterdam in 1572, although this is on a greatly reduced scale.

The Woodcut map was traditionally attributed to the surveyor and cartographer Ralph Agas, but this attribution is now considered to be erroneous.

Exhibition “Preliminaries”: design at the threshold of love.

As an extension of a project on the theme of love, Slott gallery

and Exquise Design® have invited four designers to play out

their fantasies, giving shape and meaning, breathing life into their

conceptions of preliminaries. They have approached this subject

from different and complementary viewpoints that together offer

a panorama of creation like no other seen before.

Arik Levy unveils his work on the spoken and the unspoken of

intimate relations with his series of installations entitled “Confessions”

that includes, among other elements, an examination of

the iconography of sexuality alongside a kind of modern home

confessional. As the theme of the exhibition required that contributions

be solicited from both male and female designers in equal

measure, it is fascinating to observe the ways in which, by sharing

their visions, they complete and engage each other.

matali crasset and Florence Jaffrain carry us away to underwater paradises

with their respective works “Aequorea” and “Belly Love”, creating

soft and sensual shapes that run up against Mathieu Lehanneur’s

torrid yet petrified flames in his “The Power of Love”.

Visitors will also be struck by the singular visions of the four

designers, each of which offers a completely different approach

to objects. With his Confessions, Arik Levy makes the object a

tool for communication, standing in for the fears and concerns

we often find it so difficult to voice. Straddling the boundaries of

design and architecture, matali crasset approaches the object

as a space. Mathieu Lehanneur, working from a more sculptural

perspective, raises the object to the heights of allegory (of the

couple), at the same time endowing it with a mediating role.

Last but not least, Florence Jaffrain tends to make the object an end

in itself, by creating a sofa that might almost be perceived as

playing the role of the lover, becoming an object of desire.

This is a map in the office of the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union in Addis. One of the best maps I have seen with all of the Communities in this area.

Take a close look you might notice a few coffees you have loved in the past---I think almost all the great coffees I have tasted from Ethiopia are on this map.

Detail from a wall-sized map I saw in an Austrian museum. I love the variety of trees and the simplicity of the marks made to create them.

The USGS GNIS place name database was used to make this map. It is a somewhat whimsical search for geographic patterns. It is curious how "Laurel" is found throughout the Appalachian region while "Chestnut" seems more limited to the eastern edge of the Appalachians.

Source data, USGS GNIS placename database and ESRI's state boundary data. Software, ESRI ArcGIS.

A great map card! :)

Title: "Map of Manitoba, published by authority of the Provincial Government, March 1893". This very scarce folded map measures approx. 24" x 24" and shows every section (square mile unit) of land in the province. Compared to the Rand McNally map of approximately a decade earlier, the Provincial map shows the province with more or less its modern muncipal organization into Rural Municipalities. Although the main map does not make a point of including the disputed part of Northwestern Ontario, it does contain an inset map (not shown) showing Manitoba's position in the North American continent in which a sizeable region north of the Winnipeg and English Rivers (i.e. not including southerly areas such as Rat Portage/Kenora) and extending several hundred miles into what is now Northwestern Ontario is clearly labelled "Manitoba".

This copy of the map folds and includes a glued-on title page that indicates that it was intended for distribution at the 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago, Illinois.

The new iPhone location finder is surprisingly accurate. The purple pin shows my apartment, the red pin is marking where Google maps thinks my address is.

The cell-tower triangulation method placed me within about 120 feet (36 meters). The reported address is off by about 350 feet (107 meters)

But then I can see at least a dozen cellular transmitters from my apartment windows, so I suppose these results are not all that surprising.

I didn't get the KIRO AM range map, but I did get a QSL card.

Was interested in how far the daytime signal traveled, tho 6AM is still kind of night.

I used to think the radio waves traveled along the ground in the day, but turns out they still refract in the ionosphere if traveling a long distance (I think). Ionosphere is just not as good of a reflector as it is at night.

If traveling by ground wave, the trip from Seattle to Pullman would be fantastic.

During my childhood years, the family drove that trip to visit my sister, Lillian, who was living in Seattle. More recently, I have biked across the state.

As the radio waves travel, they can sample much of Washington State's varied geography.

Starting on what would be likely the cool cloudy west side, they would cross part of Puget Sound on their way from the KIRO towers on Vashon Island.

Then they would cross the urban metro area south of Seattle, scale the Cascade Mountains and reach the dry sagebrush areas of Eastern Washington. By now, the sun would be baking.

The radio waves would reach my receiver after crossing Palouse wheat fields around Pullman.

If the magnetic waves could bring samples of the geography they traveled through; like the feel of an overcast day or the smell of pine and then sagebrush, that would be interesting, but only in my unusual dreams.
