The Austin Sheerline was a luxury vehicle, manufactured between 1947 and 1954 in the UK. They were purchased for a number of different uses from ambulances just like this one to funeral hearses, limousines and even an ice-cream van.

This particular vehicle was manufactured in 1955 by Herbert Lomas Ltd at their Wilmslow (Cheshire) factory on an extended chassis. It weighs over two tonnes. This weight, coupled with the weight of a full cab of staff and all the necessary equipment meant that these vehicles were very difficult to steer.

The Sheerline was designed by Austin during World War Two, but production did not begin until 1947 because of the national focus on war production. It was a luxurious vehicle in the style of the contemporary Rolls-Royce or Bentley but at a much lower price, around two-thirds that of the equivalent Rolls-Royce vehicle.

Inside the ambulance, surfaces were made to be easily cleaned and modern steel frames meant stretchers could glide in smoothly, ensuring a more comfortable travel for the patient. The back can accommodate another stretcher with the row of seats folded down. These vehicles were simplistic but focused on comfort for the patient.

Originally purchased as a works ambulance, Austin Sheerline XPJ 898 later became part of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service fleet and has been refurbished into the livery of Sheffield Ambulance Service. The vehicle is on display at the National Emergency Services Museum, Sheffield.

IMG_7929r Collins Co., Collinsville, CT. Connecticut 19th century ax factory.

The Collins & Company factory opened in 1826 with the purchase of an old gristmill and a few acres of land along the Farmington River in Canton. The company started small with eight men, each making eight axes per day. ... The emerging factory town became known as Collinsville.

The Collins Company Axe Factory, was a manufacturer of edge tools, such as axes, machetes, picks and knives. Collins machetes were the brand of choice in South America. Collins tools were used almost exclusively for the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway, and axes and picks made their way across the country to be used in the California Gold Rush. Admiral Peary carried Collins tools to the North Pole.

Typical of New England mills, the Collins Company axe factory was sited on a river (the Farmington), and their production was powered by utilizing the water's strength to turn turbines and power machines. The numerous old buildings ramble along the riverbanks intertwined by an intricate maze of sluices that run throughout the site. The company closed its doors in 1966, but the factory buildings stayed standing and are now rented out to local businesses

The metamorphosis in manufacturing....it imperative for companies to rework their strategies to become globally competitive. The 4 week strategic plan we prepared had one objective....to have fun and learn. Our strategy was aimed to de-risk our approach and do it at night. Our technology and development plan was to light up the old Guyndah as you have never seen it before and keep a handle on costs. Finally, our human resource strategy was centered on creating a collaborative approach and team providing provisions for fun and excitement.

HMQS Gayundah was a flat-iron gunboat operated by the Queensland Maritime Defence Force and later the Royal Australian Navy (as HMAS Gayundah). She entered service in 1884 and was decommissioned and sold in 1921. She then served as sand and gravel barge for Brisbane Gravel Pty Ltd until 1950, when she was scrapped. In 1958, Gayundah was run aground at Woody Point at Redcliffe, to serve as a breakwater structure.

While in Arizona, I had the opportunity to visit the DaDee Manufacturing facility. I met Refuse Arizona the week before at Waste Expo and we were able to arrange a tour at the DaDee Manufacturing facility. On my way to their facility I saw The Scorpion FE Mack LR from Waste Expo pull into the Mack dealership in Phoenix, it was neat seeing that truck twice in one week in two different states. Once I arrived at DaDee Manufacturing Refuse Arizona gave me a tour that started at prefabrication and went all the way to final assembly. I had a great time learning more about the DaDee products and seeing them in person.

Big thank you to everyone at DaDee Manufacturing, they are truly an innovative company with products of the highest quality. And a special thank you to Refuse Arizona for the amazing tour, it was an honor meeting you and Waste Expo and talking about the Waste Industry.
