Wikipedia: The Studebaker Champion is an automobile which was produced by the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Indiana, from the beginning of the 1939 model year until 1958. It was a full-size car in its first three generations and a mid-size car in its fourth and fifth generation models, serving as the junior model to the Commander.

St. Louis Car Museum: With the anticipation of the World War II effort to begin, all automotive manufacturers ceased civilian production early into 1942 to focus production on military equipment and supplies. Production of cars and trucks halted on February 10, 1942. Approximately 300 vehicles built up to this period at Studebaker were reserved by the US Government to be utilized only for the Civil Defense Auxiliary and the New York Police Department. To conserve material, the usually chromed components were instead painted. These special vehicles were recorded with Studebaker as Deluxe Champion Model 90 “Black Out” Coupes and Sedans.

Special:

- While visiting the VW factory in 1947, Dutch car importer Ben Pon came up wîth the idea for the Bus (drawn on the back of his cigar box ☺) as we know it today.

- Officially launched on November 12, 1949, the Transporter line did not go on sale to the general public until March 1950. The Typ 2 T1a were among the first “forward control” vans in which the driver was placed above the front roadwheels.

- At first the T1a was only produced in the Wolfsburg plant, but from March 8, 1956 in a new plant in Hanover (VW-Werk Hannover).

- Versions created until 1955 were known as the T1a. These versions are often called the 'Barndoor' versions due to their large rear engine cover.

- The T1b were produced from 1955 through 1963. These versions had a smaller engine cover and smaller, 15-inch wheels.

- The T1c was introduced in 1963 and produced until 1967. These versions had a wider rear door.

- German production stopped after the 1967 model year; however, the T1 still was made in in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil until 1975.

- The varieties were huge, from Transporter, Camper, Delivery Van, Kombi, Microbus, Pick-Up, Ambulance, Ladder Truck, Police Vans, Buses etc.

- The T1 was very popular in the USA (Hippie Bus☺): by 1964 it was accounting for over 63% of all import vehicle sales.

* this car has a later on T2 1584cc flat-4 engine with 50 bhp / 3.800 rpm and torque 104 Nm / 2.400 rpm

Special:

- This first generation 2-door Coupé body Pony Car (1969-1974) was designed by Carl Cameron, built on the Chrysler E-platform (like the Plymouth Barracuda) and assembled in Hamtramck (Michigan) and in Los Angeles (California).

- Everything changed at Dodge (and all car manufacturers) when the 1973 oil crisis hit the United States. The government passed legislation (1972) requiring engines to have the ability to run on low lead or no lead gasoline. Government safety and emission regulations, and increasing insurance premiums meant the horsepower rating and size for all manufacturers was on the decline.

- Engine power was now rated in SAE net horsepower, meaning theoretical horsepower with all accessories in place.

- So this 2+2-seater fixed-head Hardtop Coupé was for now the last series Challenger, only available with two detuned V-8 engines.

- Dodge re-used the Challenger name again for its second generation Challenger from 1978 until 1983.

- They were available as this Hardtop Coupé and as 2-door Rallye Hardtop Coupé (replaced the R/T series in 1972) with a faux brake vent on the fenders and a shaker hood scoop (1972-1974: 16,437 units built).

Special:

- The first high performance, low drag two-seater based on aircraft design principals was designed by Sixten Sason in 1954. SAAB’s management was not interested in pursuing the car, after Rolf Mellde and his team built in secret there first prototype.

- "Sonett" is Swedish for "how nice".

- Although the Sonett II was specially designed for the US market, sales were bad (1966-1970: 258 units built with a 3 cylinder 841cc / 2-stroke engine and 1,538 units built wit a 1498cc Ford V-4). Italian designer Sergio Coggiola drew a new design (adjusted by Gunnar A. Sjögren to use the mid section of the Sonett II and SAAB 96 parts like brakes and suspension), the Sonett III. It still had the underpowered Ford V-4 engine (floor shift now) and was still not a Sports Car.

- The Sonett III, with pop-up headlights, was introduced at the 1970 New York Motor Show and assembled at AB Zweedse Järnvägsverkstäderna (ASJ) in Arlöv (Sweden).

- From model year 1971 this stronger 1699cc Ford V-4 became standard, in order to handle US emissions controls.

- In 1974, unable to handle the more strict automobile emission control in the US, production on the Sonett III ended.

- Production slipped by about eight percent to 619,554 cars as the Great Depression continued, but as Ford's output plummeted by nearly two-thirds, Chevrolet reclaimed first place in the American car sales table.

- The engine, Chevrolets first straight-6 since 1915, was developed by the Chevrolet engineering department under the leadership of Ormond E. Hunt and, later, James M. Crawford and used at first in the 1929 AC International Series.

- The nickname of the engine was "Stovebolt Six," which referred to the engine's slotted quarter-inch head bolts.

- The six-cylinder engine had overhead valves, non-pressurized lubrication, a cast-iron block and a fuel pump to feed the updraft carburetor.

- Chevrolet marketed this triumphant return as "A Six for the Price of a Four".

- This 2-door Coupé 5 Window, styling by Harley Earl, has a three-speed manual “Straight-cut” gearbox + reverse, floor shift controls, a Carter RJH08 updraft carburettor, distributor and coil ignition system, oil pressure, amperage, water temperature, fuel level, speedometer and a trip odometer are centered in the dashboard, pull-knobs controls the exterior lamps, choke, spark and throttle, a hand brake, with pistol-grip release, to the right, a rear-mounted 42 liter fuel tank, a 9 inch single plate clutch and rear wheel drive.

Special:

- The 32 is basically an improved 600/32 with a bigger and more powerful engine and was redesigned by Johan van der Brugghen (W. van den Brink designed it original in 1955).

- The body was re-styled by Giovanni Michelotti.

- DAF was the first car to have a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) system - the innovative DAF Variomatic: a continuously variable gearbox transmission with an automatic two-stage centrifugal clutch in drum (with "het pientere pookje" - "the smart gear stick").

- An interesting feature: putting the car in reverse reversed the entire drive system. This enabled the vehicle, in theory, to reach the same top speed in reverse as forward.

- Advantage: it was the only small, affordable car with automatic transmission.

- Disadvantage: because the car had an unsportsmanlike image, it had often an "image" for the elderly or disabled people.

- The Series 32 was available as this 2-door Coach, as 2-door Panel Van, as 2-door Estate Wagon and as 2-door Pick-Up.

- They were only assembled in Eindhoven - The Netherlands.

- All Swift automobiles were hand-built, so they could not compete with the mass-production methods of Morris, Austin, and Ford, whose similar cars sold for only half the price of Swifts and the factory closed its doors for the last time in April 1931.

- According to the Swift Register, only 212 Swift motor cars of all types are known to survive worldwide (as of September 2010) mostly in the UK but spread as far as South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

- Only a dozen-or-so known P-Types like this automobile seem to exist.

- Besides this Convertible, the P-Types were available as Coupé, as Four-Seater Tourer, as Crusader Saloon, as Paladin Saloon and as Fleetwing Saloon.
