♫ Mood ~ Shinedown - Simple Man

See No Evil

by Billy Collins

No one expected all three of them

to sit there on their tree stumps forever,

their senses covered with their sinuous paws

so as to shut out the vile, nefarious world.

As it happened,

it was the one on the left

who was the first to desert his post,

uncupping his ears,

then loping off into the orbit of rumors and lies,

but also into the realm of symphonies,

the sound of water tumbling over rocks

and wind stirring the leafy domes of trees.

Then the monkey on the right lowered his hands

from his wide mouth and slipped away

in search of someone to talk to,

some news he could spread,

maybe something to curse or shout about.

And that left the monkey in the middle

alone with his silent vigil,

shielding his eyes from depravity's spectacle,

blind to the man whipping his horse,

the woman shaking her baby in the air,

but also unable to see

the russet sun on a rough shelf of rock

and apples in the grass at the base of a tree.

Sometimes, he wonders about the other two,

listens for the faint sounds of their breathing

up there on the mantel

alongside the clock and the candlesticks.

And some nights in the quiet house

he wishes he could break the silence with a question,

but he knows the one on his right

would not be able to hear,

and the one to his left,

according to their sacred oath--

the one they all took with one paw raised--

is forbidden forever to speak, even in reply.

A clock I received from my Mom a very long time ago.

I was fascinated with it. The way the clock weight moved smoothly and silently around and back and forth.

It is a wind up version and over time, with moves from one house to another, it stopped working. ...Maybe I wound it a bit too much. I still have the key.

Every now and then, I think...well...I will find a clock maker to fix it. I still think I may.....

Not a great holiday for me (again), but here is my mantel.

I deliberately underexposed this and used a warming filter to give it an older tungsten lamp feel more reminiscent of my youth when all we had were incandescent lights in our house.

I found these little pumpkins at the florist, and yes, they are real.

wished to make some changes in my home so I'e decided to decorate my mantel with an old lace I found some years ago in a flea market.

This photo was taken at a place called Big Bear, Ca. It's located in the Southern Rocky Mountain range just north of Los Angeles, California. This is actually a wood carved mantel that was just above a fireplace in one of the lodges at Big Bear. With the Christmas Garland added, it's just in time for the season of Christmas. Happy Holidays everyone!

My wife's decorated mantelpiece. A study of color and shadow. See the star shape on the left? The TV screen on the bottom right could be photoshopped out, but it is so American to have the TV going all the time.

Ein Mantel, den der 2018 verstorbene Dichter, Philosoph und Liedermacher Wilhelm Raabe, genannt "Tiger Willi" getragen hat

A coat worn by the poet, philosopher and singer-songwriter Wilhelm Raabe, called "Tiger Willi" 1947-2018

I was given a tall, white poinsettia for Christmas. Over time its leaves fell off so now the "flowers" live on adorning my mantel.

Original plant in comments.

Bestimmt.

A mantle clock in gilt brass with muse of astronomy.

At Hinton Ampner.

In the 19th century, and perhaps earlier, reverse painting on glass was an art form used in mirror manufacturing, clocks and more. This is from an old Gilbert shelf clock that keeps time and adds its rhythm (need a word origin search for this one) to a quiet room. Nice background for thought and meditation. If you looks close, you can see the painter's technique.

vorne wird er schon richtig speckig
