A nice park with great views and a really steep hill just out of sight beyond the trees going down.

A shot I've had in mind for long while, waiting for a top and tailed train at the right time (though this could've done with being half an hour later), and the sun being out, and me being available... 701501 is escorted over the viaduct at Mansfield by 47749, and hanging on the back on its first run since gaining celebrity status, is 56081. 14/09/22 5Q11 0800 Old Dalby-Worksop Yd.

NS oil train 66X passes underneath the approach signal for Mansfield. With the demise of Oil trains on the Ft Wayne Line, this stretch of the railroad may be in jeopardy.

On a perfect clear late Summer morning, NS train 12V is led by the Pennsy Heritage unit as it splits the position light signals at CP West Mans as they roll into Mansfield, Ohio on namesake rails. These signals protect the diamond with the Ashland Railway's former B&O line which gives them access to the large grain elevator in the background. Thanks to Zach for waking me up and to Scott and Wak for their assistance.

The covered bridge was originally built in Mansfield Quebec in 1898. It had a major facelift last year they did a great job to preserve it for years to come.

After pulling past the Pennsylvania PL bridge guarding CP Mans, NS 171 shoves back into the Mansfield Yard to retrieve the rest of their train with Delaware and Hudson heritage unit #1080 on point. I haven’t had much luck with the Fort Wayne Line west of Alliance in the past, so I’m grateful it worked out this time around.

Late in the day, NS D36 approaches Mansfield, Illinois, the former site of the junction with Conrail's old P&E line, with an SD60E/SD40E combo leading a train of mixed freight, including a Caterpillar load.

After doing some switching, CSX B733 pulls up to the signal at Mansfield Interlocking at the south end of Mansfield Yard. The crew will wait for the light before heading out onto the main to work local customers on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor.

After yet another hospital appointment in Mansfield, we decided to visit this popular Italian restaurant. It is housed in quite a distinctive building with a more modern bar and daytime inside and outdoor seating area added to the left, as you look at the photo. I could only eat their ‘homemade’ soup with crusty Italian bread due to my condition whilst my wife had the chicken skewers. I must research to find out what the original use of this quite building was.

We didn't have a great day for hiking and when we got to the lookout higher above the lake - the clouds had really rolled in obscuring most of our views.

This would an amazing place to shoot at the peak of the fall foliage color season - oh well - maybe another year.

Despite the changes occurring along the Ft. Wayne Line, some places remain unspoiled (at least for now)...

Roughly 15 minutes prior to sunrise, ASRY 30 departs Mansfield for Ashland taking the connection off the B&O onto the EL main. The signals in the foreground belong to NS guarding the diamond at "West Mans".

The MBTA's office car special is at about MP 0.2 as they near the south end of the Framingham Secondary and are about to enter Amtrak's Northeast Corridor mainline at Mansfield Interlocking. They are passing the little used CSXT yard on this section of the line that is normally freight only excepting the occasional football or concert train from Providence to Gillette Stadium.

The train consists of new theater car number 535 (former 1515) named 'Mayflower'. The train also includes the other two office cars number 529 'Constitution' and number 525 'Minuteman' along with 534 (former 1503), one of two specially wrapped revenue geometry cars (only along to meet timetable minimum axle requirements). All four cars are rebuilt 500-series MBBs, among the few survivors of a fleet of 67 cars (33 blind and 34 cab control) built new in Germany in 1987-88. Leading the train are heritage units 1129 and 1030, the former a GP40MC dressed in the 'cranberry' scheme and the latter an F40PH-3C dressed in Boston and Maine Minuteman livery.

The train operated from South Station down the Dorchester Branch to Readville, then via the Franklin Line to Walpole, then down the Framingham Secondary to Mansfield, then Amtrak's Northeast Corridor to Davisville to the Seaview Transportation Company where it was turned on their wye before returning straight back via the direct NEC route. On board were MBTA and Keolis officials inspecting recent track and signal projects and looking at the new platform at Foxboro station recently installed to support the flood of passengers for next years World Cup matches to be held at Gillette Stadium.

As for the railroad, built as the Mansfield and Framingham Railroad in 1870, the 21 mile route between its two namesake points came under the aegis the Old Colony Railroad in 1879 and then the New Haven in 1893 when that system absorbed the OCRR. 40 years later passenger service ended, but for the past 86 years the line has been an important freight route. Passing from the NH to PC, CR and then ultimately CSXT, the line was sold by the latter in June 2015 to MassDOT for $23 million. In 2019 passenger service returned to the four miles of the line south from Walpole to a new Foxboro station adjacent to Gillette Stadium and the Patriot Place complex, and that portion was transferred to the MBTA and is maintained and dispatched by Keolism. The balance of the line is dispatched and maintained under contract by Mass Coastal but still served by CSXT which owns the perpetual freight rights and still runs four freight trains a day on this line five days a week.
