30-second long exposure with an ND filter.

Personally I would have preferred the 4-inch filters so I can drop in after I have set the focus, but I can’t seem to find them in Hong Kong. But I found this variable filter recently: the H&Y ND2-ND400 specifically. It is a screw in, and when set to minimum ND2 I can still see the scene fairly clearly as well as able to focus using the AF on the camera. After I have the parameters set, I dialled it to ND400 and expose everything manually.

I think that I should be able to push a little longer next time. What I observed is that because of the wind, the plants appear to move quite a bit and thus rendering a blur. So next time I would try to do a 2-minute if I am able to.

Meghan going to great lengths to capture that shot of shots that we all hope for on days like this.

More treacherous than it actually looks however; the water directly in front was open and this whole ice ridge was practically moving underneath us. Had it given way we would have had mere minutes to kiss our asses goodbye before succumbing to hypothermia.

No worries, everyone lived. Meg probably got another good shot like

It's somewhat ironic that driftwood features so prominently in a lot of marine landscapes, but there is something iconic about it that keeps drawing you back. It gives great balance to scenes like this. Thank you for drifting my way!

Since my D40 has no bracketing, I have to shoot multiple exposures of the same shot using a really steady tripod any time I want to end up with a useful HDR image. Today was no different.

Early morning low light coupled with the use of an 8x ND filter allowed for 9 exposures, some as long as 20 seconds.

Although it didn't look like it at the time, my sensor was well aware that the clouds were indeed moving which gave this shot an effect I wasn't really expecting.

彩熊 Rainbow Teddy (RT) is super psyched with the EOS M.

“Wow, this camera is the bomb!” RT said. “Finally there is a camera that I can control. I don’t even need a shutter release. I just point and it focuses. And the mirrorless body is light like me [1]. Best yet, I can even reach the lens for zooming.”

Pictured here with the Canon EF 17-40 f/4L USM lens [2], the Canon EOS M is the first mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera produced by Canon [3]. It is effectively a miniature version of the Canon EOS 650D with a simpler physical interface. Like the 7D, it contains a 18 megapixel APS-C crop frame CMOS chip. But unlike the 7D, it's focusing performance is rather poor.

However its saving grace is its ability to do full HD 1080p videography in AI servo mode—which is what SML now uses for lightweight travel use. Also now semi-permanently mounted on tripod to do videography for the Serenity series. Recommended.

Version 2. Mounted on camera

See notes for instructions.

Check out the instructions on the ringlight here.

I'll be adding some sample shots later this week.

My tripod that I ordered finally came in! I ordered the Manfrotto 190XB, but I bought it without a head. But as I was looking for a head I saw the 190XPROB with the 496RC head that I wanted was cheaper than buying them separately. So I'll be returning this tripod and buying the 190XPROB with the 496RC head.

Balancing with the subwoofer [1] as well as the strap for the camera, 彩熊 Rainbow Teddy (RT) mounted the Canon EOS 7D [2] first on the Canon BG-E7 Battery Grip [3] onto the Manfrotto 3030 Pan/Tilt Head with Quick Release [4] on the Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod [5].

“Together with the Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM lens [6], this setup weighs more than 1000 times my total weight,” RT said. “My hands cannot really reach the shutter release on the camera, but thankfully the battery grip has another shutter release which allows me to do portrait photography easy. Perfect for me!”

Once the weather broke we were actually treated with decent conditions. The wind was a bit cold and the ice was literally moving underneath our feet but we got a few good shots once the light showed itself.

Trowbridge falls again. I don't know how many times I can shoot the same location and I always find something new about it that I missed the last time.

A pile of concrete rubble is exactly that. Just a pile of rubble. An eyesore.

It remains that way until someone cleans it up or even better, someone decides to put their talents to use and make that pile of rubble into a work of art.

The unknown artist(s) who created these murals have spent much of their own time and money creating an amazing work of art out of a pile of concrete.

Good on them.

And who says graffiti has to be negative vandalism?

"Empty Road"

Throw away your anger

Throw away the sheath

Charge and spike your heavy guns

Because that ain't no kind of belief

Dream of where it left you

When you were still too young

To know the difference between the faith in your heart

And the politics of looking dumb

It's all I know

This empty road

It keeps me looking for a place in your heart

It's all I know

Said brother are you weary?

Said sister are you safe?

Has this world got you thinking

That it ain't nothing but jailers cage?

Well child there ain't no worries

And child it ain't no thing

Because this world's too old to hate you

And too young to give up spring

It's all I know

This empty road

It keeps me looking for a place in your heart

It's all I know

Out scouting locations for the upcoming local Flickr group meet.

While trying to shoot another riverscape behind me, I never noticed that a lot of the action was happening to the east. Figured I'd get in on the action for this one.

Not my usual style. I don't know why I think that but I do. I'm not even sure if I like this or not.

It's hard to do post production work when you've had many beers'.

I missed a great sunrise yesterday morning and I swore that I would not miss another good one within 24 hours. Got up early (5:00 am), coffee, tripod, gear, headed eastward into the sun.

Ended up at the waterfront and enjoyed a spectacular 20 minutes of morning silence. Just me, my gear and this view.

I'm taking the next 9 days off work so I plan on doing this more often.

Shot from last weekend's "fishing" expedition to the wilds of the boreal forest.

That half hour before and the half hour just after sunrise. The magic hour. My favorite time of day to pack up and go stand in the middle of a semi frozen river.

Today I tried out another new Hoya ND filter and was quite pleased with the results.

Even though the D40 isn't capable of bracketing exposures, proper HDR is easilly accomplished now that I've acquired a good tripod/ballhead set up.

Sure water can look nice and smooth, even calming but don't let it fool you.

After a torrential downpour of rain today I was witness (again) to the relentless power of water as it invaded my basement for the second time in a year.

Not to worry however, the water could not break me because I am stronger.

I plan on getting out in the morning and shooting some evidence of this vast rainstorm we had. Should be a hoot.

20 minutes earlier and it was still dark. Around here, the month of March always seems to provide great sunrises if you're up early enough.

With the onset of warmer weather in the coming weeks, I predict this is not the last of them.

I've had my Manfrotto 190XB for a couple months now and I absolutely love it. The 484RC2 ball head is a major plus!! *hbw*

Taken from distance, I almost had to max out my zoom to get in this close across the water. I never even noticed the ship along side the dock until I got this shot uploaded and viewed on my monitor.

Full color RAW touched up with Camera RAW + B&W conversion. The color version was nice but I'm liking the contrast of B&W when it comes to landscapes these days.

Strange light on this morning. From yellows and oranges to pinks and blues all in the span of 10 minutes watching the sunrise.

I'm really starting to think that the combination of Camera RAW coupled with Photoshop CS3 is almost too perfectly suited for what I do.

Nuisance trees quickly became a natural way of framing this shot after an attempt at finding a better spot to shoot from.

10 second exposure. The sunrise was average and my other first choice spot wasn't good enough to shoot on this morning.

I was transfixed by the sight of these new stems that in their rush to come to life had literally forced their way through the layer of leaves above them. The leaves are now raised about six inches off the ground by what appear to be tender little shoots. Winter's death is strong, but in the end, life wins!

The sun is often quite rude when it makes it's grand entrance every morning. Long exposures during sunrise are always tricky like that especially once the sun has crested the horizon.

I tend to shoot most of them about 15 to 20 minutes before the sun comes up because even though it is constantly getting brighter, I've got enough darkness to allow the super long exposures (30 seconds or more) that I love to take.

This was probably one of the last shots from this morning because once the sun is over that horizon, I'm usually on my way to grab another coffee.

Exposure problems? You better believe it. It was so damn hard to get the right exposure for this shot. Not an overly difficult scene but with the sun coming up directly in behind the clouds and reflecting off of the water, it made for an extremely bright sky and the highlights were practically blown out.

It took a slew of shots (15-20) from this spot before I finally got an exposure I was happy with.

Sky not completely blown, check.

Mist rising off the water, check.

Frost covered foreground grasses, check.

Good enough for me.

Do it justice, view it large

Another frosty October lakeside shot off of the side of the highway. Exposure problems be damned! I shoot enough until it's at least close to right.

Not sure why I didn't spot meter this one.

Probably because I just thought of it now.

"Do not call yourself an "artist-photographer" and make "artist-painters" and "artist-sculptors" laugh; call yourself a photographer and wait for artists to call you brother."

When I purchased my first DSLR I made it a point to pick one thing, learn it and do it well. That thing was long exposed (slow motion) water and it has continued to be one of my most favorite (obviously) things to shoot as I think it adds mood to what would otherwise be a mundane and average photo.

I've picked up a few tricks here and there along the way but it never ceases to amaze me just when you think you've got it all figured out, you learn a new trick that catches you completely by surprise.

Do it justice and View On Black

Shot this spot before but it's been a while.

A lot of water coming down the flood gates on this night. Loud and fast, it's a wonder why that hydro pole hasn't been taken out yet.

I liked this one enough to not touch it with Photoshop. Unaltered, as shot.

You know you wanna view it LARGE

I was going for a kind of abstract feel here trying to work with the contrast between the cool of the ice surface and the warmth of the sky. I ended up using the break wall in a sense to cut the image in half separating the two elements. I dunno. It was real early.

Yes, I had to get in on the action this morning. Another shameless self portrait and although slightly blurred by the constant wind off of the lake, I like the way it turned out.

Ominous. Like the feeling you get in your gut when you walk into a room and run into Fedor and he's pissed off at you.

This storm came out of nowhere so I decided I'd just stand on the beach and see what happened. Sure, there was lightning but I figured if it was my time to go it was a great night to go out.

I tend to tempt fate from time to time. I'm really not sure why.

I think I took this one last June (2008) just after torrential rains hit the area.

I am bloody well sick of snow and shit rain and gray skies, ice and all of the BS of winter. I needed some color so off to the archives I went.

It's funny when you go out intent on shooting a hundred or so shots in the morning and never end up posting them until almost a year later.

I have established that I have far too many shots in the archives. Had I known about this one I would have certainly posted it last year.

You can view it larger here.

Yesterday morning, another shot of the sky. The colors were almost mundane for the first 10 minutes of sunrise but managed to explode into vivid pinks and oranges within a matter of minutes.

Aside from adding my usual border, there has been no post production work on this shot.

These are the colors as seen by my sensor, WB set for cloudy as usual at sunrise.
