While waiting for your favorite target bird, the eagle, to come along there is always other interesting wildlife to shoot. This Lake Darner (I think this is the name) was sitting next to us during our down time. So I decided to take him into my photo shoot for the day. When viewing full screen this looks very interesting.

This was taken with a Canon 7D MKII, 100-400L, @ 400MM, ISO 400, f8 @ 320fps. Location was at Three Lakes Wildlife Managment Area.

Enjoy!

The red-bellied woodpecker is rather misleadingly named -- the conspicuous red color is not on this bird’s belly, but rather on its head and neck. Males have a striking red forehead, cap and nape, while females have a red nape. Both sexes have bold black and white bars on the back.

Red-bellied woodpeckers pick at bark rather than drilling for insects. They eat seeds, insects, and fruit and often feed on oranges in Florida’s orange groves. Red-bellies are regular visitors to bird feeders where they aggressively chase off other birds.

Red-bellied woodpeckers are notorious for drumming on metal and wood siding around houses. When trying to attract a mate they will tap on anything that resonates, including metal gutters, TV antennas, and even cars.

I found this male at Dinner Island Ranch Wildlife Management Area in Hendry County, Florida.

The Southern Outer Banks of NC 11 months afte Hurricane Florence. Vegetation has returned and the sand is beginning to collect. It provesagain, coastal managment is best left to nature. Thanks for your visits, comments and faves. Have a terrific weekend.

This public land is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) here in the United States. It is used for multiple purposes, including (as seen here) mining operations. This is parched and barren landscape receives very little precipitation. Such conditions create hostile living conditions for both plant and animal life. But if you happen to be a photographer, it really makes for some really unique sunset photos!

Railway bridge that carried the former Newton Stewart to Whithorn Railway between Newton Stewart and Causeway End station .The line to Wigtown opened in 1875 and to Garlieston and Whithorn in 1877. For the first ten years it was run under private contract by Thomas Wheatley who came from the North British Railway. Following his untimley death in 1883 the remaing three years transfer of managment passed to his son WT Wheatley. The line then became part of the Portpatrick & Wigtownshire Joint Railway until the grouping in 1923. Motive power being provided by the GS&W and Caledonian Railway.

This is a scene I have relived many times... carefully making my way along a dirt two-track trail looking for a place to camp on public lands in Wyoming for the night amongst the sagebrush. These lands are managed by the Bureau of Land Management and you can basically camp anywhere without paying. That's my kind of a deal!

There are some advantages to camping on BLM instead of Forest Service lands. BLM has far fewer restrictions on where you can camp and these lands are less frequented by others. And, unlike traveling along Forest Service roads, I've never had a problem turning around on BLM trails. The downside is that BLM lands are basically what nobody else wants... it is usually dry, dusty, barren, and has no shade. That's not always the case, but the general rule.

Baba Yaga (Baba Jaga) is a witch or ogress from Slavic folklore who lives in a magical hut in the forest and either helps, imprisons, or eats people (usually children). She is among the most famous figures from Slavic folklore as guardian of the fountains of the waters of life and is sometimes seen as embodying female empowerment and independence.

Her name is often understood to mean "Grandmother Witch", though this is challenged and there is no universal agreement on the meaning of Yaga. She is first mentioned in a book on Russian grammar in 1755 but is thought to have existed in the oral tradition of Slavic folktales much earlier. Although she is usually the villain of any piece she appears in, she can also offer assistance and is understood as more of a trickster character who encourages transformation than the stock figure of an evil witch

They are lighting the bridge up at night now. I finally made it to shoot the bridge at night. Today at work I was having one of those days that I was sooooo depressed. I mean it was really getting to me. My day got made though when the managment asked me to do a little photography for them tommorow. Just a couple of shots for there presentation but it just really made my day.

The Arizona Bureau of Land Managment (BLM) manages 2 wild horse herds of about 250 animals and about 4800 wild burros. Having no real predators the herd can double in size in about 4 years. To try and keep the herd in balance; they allow adoption to capable people and agencies and since 1973 have adopted out more than 207,000 animals.

Speckled Warbler

≠======================≠

Averton Engineering put up some pics with a comment about Woodlands Historic Park. As Peter and Clare descibe it as being devoid of bird life.

Andrew Haysom. EE and I used to wander over the Backpaddock from the early 2000s when there were dozens of species of birds, huge number of Brown-headed and White-naped and Fuscous Honeyeaters. Trees that rang with the calls of Purple-crowned Honeyeaters and permanent Red-capped and Scarlet Robins. (30 pairs would be an under-estimate)

Large winter flocks could be heard travelling over the entire Grey Box forest.

Just on the rise of the hillside was a number of Speckled Warbler, and this is one from back in 2012.

Now with the park surrounded on several sides with housing estates, a change to the managment to suit the endangered Eastern Bandicoot, which has resulted in some significant environmental changes and the Backpaddock has become an avian desert.

I no longer have the desire to walk those wonderous Grey Box stands that taught me so much about birds and photography.

... it's not too late to read about the Bureau of Land Managment's plan to make "zero" the "appropriate number" of wild horses in southwestern Wyoming:

I spent the night in Lone Pine, California on my recent trip to Arizona. I wanted to explore the Alabama Hills and get an early morning shot of Mobius Arch. I was hoping for a little cloud cover, but the clouds never materialized. Mt. Whitney (the highest summit in the contiguous United States with an elevation of 14,505 feet) is in the eye of the arch and Lone Pine Peak (12,949 feet) is on the left.

An innovative and imaginative thinker, Poe crafted stories and poems that still shock, surprise and move modern readers. His dark work influenced writers including Charles Baudelaire, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Stephane Mallarme.

Whoever built this stone ring for a campfire erred abundantly on the side of caution. The landscape is hot, dry, harsh, and utterly barren (although the desert did cool down at night so that it was comfortable sleeping).

Being prepared, I had a lot of water with me in case something went wrong... no telling how long I would have been there before someone eventually found me. This location is just east of the Mexican Mountain Wilderness in Utah.

The next morning, I walked around the area and I also flew a drone. The only living thing that I saw while I was there was a lizard.

Black Oaks, Drifting Smoke. © Copyright 2023 G Dan Mitchell.

Seasonal fire smoke drifts through a grove of Yosemite Valley black oak trees in morning light.

This photograph comes from my recent one-day marathon up-and-back photography visit to Yosemite Valley, timed to photograph the fall colors. Since I start these trips hours before sunrise, I can never be sure of what conditions I’ll find in the Valley. I knew that it was likely to be clear weather with relatively warm temperatures… but I did realize until I arrived and saw the smoke that there would be management fires in the Valley. These fires are a good thing — they reduce the dead vegetation that can produce extremely destructive fires — but they can make photograph difficult. As I passed into the Valley it was obvious that I’d be dealing with smoke!

At this time of year the backlit black oaks trees can positively glow, so I headed to a place where I know that there are some good specimens and excellent opportunities for that backlight. Arriving there, I saw that the fire was right next to and almost around the location. This could have been a very bad thing, but I soon realized that the light passing through the smoke was glowing beautifully and that it made light beams visible. I found a spot with this composition and waited for the light to move across this spot.

G Dan Mitchell is a California photographer and visual opportunist. His book, “California’s Fall Color: A Photographer’s Guide to Autumn in the Sierra” is available from Heyday Books, Amazon, and directly from G Dan Mitchell.

Early fall while wandering through a local forest resource managment area photographing birds I got an unexpect encounter. I noticed this Ribbon snake in a sunny area and as I got lower to take a few images it darted right at this big toad I had not seen. A sad thing to watch indeed but this is nature and I took the opportunity to photograph this wild encounter. After capturing a few images and video I left the snake to digest its meal in peace.
