A family that I am helping eats with me. Meat is expensive here and malnutrition is a big problem for young kids.
The clothes were given to them by my aunt, and the eldest son's school costs are paid for by my parents and I.

300 people die of HIV/AIDS related cases daily in Kenya.
The HIV/AIDS pandemic in Kenya has great socio-economic effects. The government declared AIDS a National disaster in 1999. Since then AIDS has been streamlined into all government Ministries due to the multi-sectoral of its effects. Nationally, HIV prevalence rate now for adults stands at 6.1%. Women of age 15-49 are 740,000. Children with HIV/AIDS are 150,000 and the number of AIDS orphans (age 0-17 years) stands at 1,100,000.
Each month in Kenya, over 3,000 babies are born to HIV-positive mothers. Kenya’s health system is ill-equipped for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS related diseases.

Congratulations to our high potential EOP students on their completion of their residential bridge experience. Our convocation took place on Sunday, December 4, 2016. Back in the summer of 2015, most of these students were admitted to our campus by EOP as "special-admit" freshmen. This means that CSU rejected these students due to their low grades in high school, but EOP leaders recognized their high potential. For a summer plus three semesters, EOP leaders provided support services, especially mentors, to help these students develop their potential. Now several are young scholars on our campus.

Five months ago, I met this single mother of two while trying to make a difference in a rural village in Bangladesh. This mother was a widow - her husband had died of a stomach disease and she was left to raise two kids. The eldest was currently enrolled in school but, according to the locals, she was seriously considering abandoning them due to financial reasons.
That's where my family stepped in. I'm just a student trying to make a difference - I'm not an NGO or charity. The first thing we did was give this some financial support. My mother and I committed to paying all expenses required to keep the eldest son in school. My aunt provided them with clothes (which is why they are wearing shirts now).
I noticed that this family couldn't afford electricity. And, even during the day, this house was very dark (it was a mud and straw hut). So one of the things I did was give them a wind-up flashlight. You can't get these here in Bangladesh. I bought it for five bucks in Wal-Mart - it's basically a long lasting camping flashlight. The eldest son was able to use it to study at night. He just finished graduated from Grade One.
I also gave them an insecticide treated mosquito net kindly donated to me by Vestergaard-Frandsen ( vestergaard-frandsen.com ). This PermaNet ( www.permanet.com ) is a long-lasting, insecticide treated, dirt-resistant mosquito net. This product lives up to its name! I came and found out that it didn't have a single tear or rip in it. It also had never needed to be washed - but it looked great. I was also surprised to hear that this mosquito net helped fight off a cockroach infestation. Cockroaches used to crawl around their bed at night. Now, the place is cockroach free.
I had flipped the LCD on my camera so I could frame the shot. The first time they saw an LCD screen was when I came to visit them the first time. The two kids were more interested in seeing what was on the screen than smiling. Trust me - they're always smiling off-camera :P

The event was filled with stories and tributes, highlighting the profound influence Professor Omatsu had on individuals, both personally and professionally. As we bid farewell to Professor Omatsu, we cherish the memories and lessons he imparted, carrying his legacy forward. The event served as a testament to the enduring influence of a great teacher, whose service to the community will continue to inspire generations to come.

Ilkilorit - NWI worker are filling the new Biogas with cowdoung and water.
The first installment/pilot has been at Ilkilorit high school, where ICROSS have just opened a new health clinic serving the surrounding Maasai communities. The teachers at the school now use their Biogas up to 5 times a day to cook and make tea and are delighted with how easy it is to use. They no longer have any need for charcoal or their old charcoal Jiko (charcoal burning stove) and the schoolchildren are happy to bring the required bucket of dung each day for their teachers.
The system we have installed in Ilkilorit comprises a heavy duty rubber bag as the digester. It sits mostly above ground and uses PVC pipes for inputs and outputs. Plastic gas pipes tap the gas from the digester and transfer it to the point of use. Early research has shown the waste from one cow (10-15kg per day) is enough to sustain a household of 4 people, meeting their domestic fuel needs for cooking. It is also possible to run a converted generator off the gas that can make electricity to power homes, schools and shops, or recharge batteries.
