Over the course of 4 days, May 15-18, volunteers from Qualcomm, local residents, business owners, and artists will converge in the alleyways to take part in their transformation by painting murals, installing signage, marking pathways, installing lights, weeding and planting, and a variety of other designs as determined by the community. This event will culminate into a series of block parties in each project location, featuring music, food, and guest speakers.

On Tuesday, May 7, 2019, EOP hosted a recognition reception for its graduating seniors. At the event students had the chance to to connect with their peers and they also received a commemorative EOP graduation sash, a small token from their "EOP family" to publicly acknowledge their hard work and dedication. This year marks the 50 years of the Educational Opportunity Program and we have commemorated this special occasion with our special edition “EOP 50 years” sash. The sash is a representation of not only the success of our students but the program’s 50 years of changing lives through continuous innovation. We can’t wait to see our graduating students wear it proudly during CSUN’s commencement ceremonies.
Attending the event were also former EOP students receiving their post graduate degree, who were honored with a medal.

Did you know that some of our brightest minds began their CSUN adventure as special admits? EOP leaders saw their immense potential beyond high school grades and with mentoring and support these individuals blossomed into successful college graduates!
Let's also take a moment to honor and celebrate those who were part of our EOP Resilient Scholars Program, designed to provide unwavering support to former foster youth throughout their academic pursuit. These resilient individuals have proven time and again that they are true overachievers, surpassing all expectations along their journey.
As we bid farewell to the EOP Class of 2023, we couldn't be prouder of their remarkable accomplishments and unwavering determination.

Do you know Paul? I hope so. Matter of fact, the chances are that you do -- in the way that I mean.
Paul introduced me to people. Historical people. I entered graduate school, kicking and screaming because history was such a big part of the core curriculum. Why should I be required to take so many history courses when there are so many other topics that are more relevant? I hated memorizing dates, names, and battles. And, why should we measure time by those criteria?
Then, I met Paul. He introduced himself by noting that dates are largely useless. We should know general time frames. And, he proceded to introduce us to the humanness of the people we studied. People with struggles and personal victories. Families and groups with great disfunction, yet they made a difference. People in whose lives ideas and loves were developed.
And, I was changed. In my late thirties, I started reading history. Because I wanted to! I still read it -- differently than before.
Do you know Paul? Your Paul might be Rhonda or Emilio, but it's still the person I mean. Someone whose teaching, coaching, or mentoring changed your life for the better.
I hope that I can possess some of Paul's qualities. The two of us do disagree on some matters. He welcomes disagreement! It's not his opinions that matter, but his ability to release me from my own limitations. Perhaps, when I grow up, I'll be a teacher like him.
Yesterday, ten years after I'd last seen Paul, I attended a workshop he was co-leading. How cool was that!
