In Afghanistan we visited project sites of Healnet TPO, a Dutch based NGO with years of experience in Afghanistan. We visited project sites in Jalalabad and around to learn more on their midwifery programs that run throughout the government. Their policies have now been implemented by the Afghan government through the whole country.
Castiglione di Sicilia is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Catania in Sicily.
Castiglione di Sicilia lies about 160 km east of Palermo and about 40 km north of Catania. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 3,574 and an area of 120.5 km². It borders the following municipalities: Adrano, Belpasso, Biancavilla, Bronte, Calatabiano, Francavilla di Sicilia, Gaggi, Graniti, Linguaglossa, Maletto, Malvagna, Mojo Alcantara, Motta Camastra, Nicolosi, Piedimonte Etneo, Randazzo, Roccella Valdemone, Sant'Alfio, Taormina, Zafferana Etnea.The municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia contains the frazioni (subdivisions, mainly villages and hamlets) Gravà, Mitogio, Passopisciaro, Rovittello, Solicchiata, Verzella and Castrorai.Passopisciaro is situated 12 km from Castiglione di Sicilia, at 645m above sea level on the northern slopes of Mt. Etna. Nowadays Passopisciaro has a population of about 500 but in years gone by the population was as high as 1500 people. The village can be reached by taking the SS120 Roman road from Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, or by the Circumetnea Railway. Passopisciaro's main industry is wine making, vineyards can be found scattered throughout the entire region.
Castiglione di Sicilia è un comune italiano di 3.402 abitanti della provincia di Catania in Sicilia.
E' posizionato sul versante nord dell'Etna ed è uno dei comuni del Parco dell'Etna e del Parco fluviale dell'Alcantara. Dista 50 km da Catania e 60 km da Messina.Durante i Vespri Siciliani la città, che era feudo e roccaforte di Ruggero di Lauria, venne assediata da parte di Federico III d'Aragona.Nei pressi di Castiglione si trova Santa Domenica, forse la più importante cuba bizantina presente in Sicilia, monumento nazionale dal 1909[1]. L'edificio ha dimensioni maggiori rispetto alle caratteristiche tipiche della cuba. Internamente era ricco di affreschi di fattura bizantina, oggi perduti. La facciata è caratterizzata da una grande trifora e l'interno è arricchito da volte a crociera.
The local council commissioned a private company to bore 2 holes under the Brisbane River and allow traffic to pass through for a price. this is called a tollway :-)
They have gone all arty farty at the entrances, and this is a closeup of part of the ceiling at the entrance to the tunnel. The public was allowed to make a once only opportunity to wander through the tunnel on foot prior to the opening to traffic in a few weeks time.
This may well be the only time in my lifetime that I enter the tunnel.
I spotted this particular device hanging over each lane anf guessed it goes ker-ching each time a vehicle with a toll transponder passes under it. Not a bad little money earner.

Mackenzie and Isabel make paper quilts with the coop from different shapes I cut out of construction and special paper.
There is nothing better than fresh, hand-made pesto :) My Italian boyfriend usually makes it for us but today he shared his recipe with me. It's so easy and the result is great, so much better than the pesto I used to buy.
I think we're gonna have some pasta for supper tonight... ;)

This time of year the frogs begin to abandon the pond. This one had found some pulled pond vegetation to hide in, but headed for the hills rather than go in with the green waste. Good choice.
