Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning.
Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters to homesteaders to scientists to garage tinkerers. They are of all ages and backgrounds. The aim of Maker Faire is to entertain, inform, connect and grow this community.
The original Maker Faire was held in San Mateo, CA and in 2013 celebrated its eighth annual Bay Area event with some 900 makers and 120,000 people in attendance. World Maker Faire New York, the other flagship event, has grown in four years to 600+ makers and 75,000 attendees. Detroit, Kansas City, Rome, Oslo, Tokyo, Newcastle (UK), and Shenzhen are the home of "featured" 2014 Maker Faires (200+ makers), and almost 100 community-driven, independently organized Mini Maker Faires are now being produced around the United States and the world, including right here in Portland.

This year's Scholastic Art & Writing Awards winners from across the US attended the first-ever Maker Prom at the Roosevelt Hotel in NYC on June 5th, 2014. Hive NYC organizations facilitated maker activities, including LED corsages, sonic portraits, and more. The event was also a lead-in to Mozilla's global Maker Party campaign.
A group of North Bay Maker Educators came to Tam Makers to learn how to create automata (a.k.a. kinetic or mechanical sculptures). This special meetup was organized by Adam Singer, technology / maker educator at Davidson Middle School, and my partner Geo Money, engineering teacher at Tam High School. Geo started by giving folks a tour of our incredible makerspace and wood shop, which we use in the evenings for wood working and maker classes at Tam Makers. We then gave a joint presentation about our Art Float for Social Change: earlier this year, we led over a hundred volunteers to create this large-scale, community-built, socially-conscious automaton, to inspire more people to participate in community life.
Geo then invited a dozen maker educators from Marin and the East Bay to create their own automaton, using special parts he had prepared for this occasion. Participants make their automata move round and round, side to side or up and down, using foam cams attached to bamboo sticks, sliding through 3D-printed guides on a wooden box.
This automata workshop was a great way to learn basic principles of mechanical engineering in a playful, hands-on activity that delighted everyone. We hope that students will enjoy creating their own automata as much as their teachers did!
This was one of our most fun and productive workshop at Tam Makers this year, because we were working with such creative and experienced teachers, who shared a lot of practical advice, and created with some really ingenious projects in just an hour.
Featured participants from North Bay Maker Educators include: Sara Bolduc, Claire Comins, Walt Hays, Nate MacDonald, Andrew Maley, Lisa Skinner, Paige Teamey, Jae Tillinghast, Dave Whaley, as well as Edomyas, Fred, James and Mike, to name but a few.

Notes: Thérèse Bonney (born Mabel Bonney, Syracuse, New York, July 15, 1894 - Paris, France, January 15, 1978) was an American photographer and publicist. Bonney was best known for her images taken during World War II on the Russian-Finnish front. Her war effort earned her the decoration of the Croix de guerre in May 1941, and one of the five degrees the Légion d’honneur. She published several photo-essays, and was the subject of the 1944 True Comics issue "Photo-fighter.

Notes: From The St.-Mémin collection of portraits; consisting of seven hundred and sixty medallion portraits, principally of distinguished Americans, / photographed by Gurney and Son, of New York, from proof impressions of the original copper-plates, engraved by M. de St.-Mémin, from drawings taken from life by himself, during his exile in the United States from 1793 to 1814.
Between 1796 and 1810, Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Mémin (1770-1852) created some of the most memorable images in the history of American portraiture. Nearly a thousand Americans sat for portraits, among them Thomas Jefferson, Paul Revere, Mother Seton, Meriwether Lewis, and Charles Willson Peale. Saint-Mémin's popularity rested on a growing appreciation for profiles as a particularly truthful form of portraiture, and his distinctive images have come to epitomize Federal America.
A member of the French hereditary nobility, Saint-Mémin came to New York City in 1793, at the age of twenty-three. He was a former military officer exiled by the events of the French Revolution. In New York, Saint-Mémin turned to the arts to support himself, his parents, and his sister. With some training in drawing and an aptitude for precision, he taught himself the art of engraving. First, he made a few landscapes and city plans. Then, in 1796 he took up the profession of portraitist. His partner was Thomas Bluget de Valdenuit (1763-1846), also of the French military.
The "physiognotrace" technique employed by Saint-Mémin for his portraits had been invented in 1786 by Gilles-Louis Chrétien, and was soon thereafter exploited commercially in Paris by Chrétien in partnership with Edme Quenedey. The Chrétien-Quenedey "physiognotraces" became immensely popular in the final years of the Old Régime and at the beginning of the Revolution, and there were soon to be many imitators. The machine employed by Chrétien and Quenedey enabled them to trace, by means of a sighting device combined with a pantograph, a life-size profile portrait of the sitter. This first outline sketch was then filled in by hand and was, strictly speaking, the physiogno. trace portrait. From this portrait a reduction was engraved on a copperplate, from which prints were then made. The customer usually received the "original" life-size crayon portrait, the engraved copperplate, and a dozen prints.

Maker Faire 2017 was bigger, louder and hotter than previous years. Many of the attractions were still the same, but they felt more grown up. I particularly enjoyed the illuminated art in the Dark Room, such as Peter Hudson’s 3D Stroboscopic Zoetrope. I also enjoyed all the ingenious robot exhbits and the Traveling Spectacular’s vaudeville performance
I gave a talk about our Maker Art classes on Sunday morning. We teach children to create magical worlds together, combining art, tech and storytelling. Our students get really engaged in the process, which helps them develop their creative, problem-solving and social skills.
The presentation was well received by a great group of teachers, parents and kids. I connected with several librarians and teachers interested in teaching Maker Art in their communities. And one mom reached out to me afterwards to say this was the best talk she heard this year.
Maker Faire remains the Mecca for Bay Area DIY hobbyists and it was well worth the trip for me. I made some good connections after my talk and learned more about robots for our next classes. Onwards!

Makers were invited to come by NYCR after Maker Faire NYC 2011. We had a great turnout of hackers from around the world.
Tieton Mini Maker Faire (TMMF) is an event growing out of last year's Camp Mighty Tieton. Mighty Tieton Events and Tieton Arts & Humanities are producing TMMF thanks to the illustrious Make magazine and their community-building, culture growing Maker expos, Maker Faires.
Maker Faires are events created by Make magazine to celebrate arts, crafts, engineering, science projects, and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset. Mini Maker Faires are smaller, locally organized expositions. The goal is to gather talented makers from the entire region and inspire all generations, cultures, and backgrounds to meet, learn, discuss, and share.

Today marks the final day of the Unknown Maker project. This project started in spring 2021 and it started all with a stack of tea towels that were around 100 years old. All the items in the book were found in thrift stores, on fleamarkets or gifted to me. There are examples of crochet, knitting, lace, tatting and embroidery.
All the items in the photographs are hidden in pockets. This collar is hidden in the pocket that is made out of a crocheted tablecloth.
