Living the dream. This is the statement for month 3 out of 12. The challenge is getting more and more complicated and every month I struggle to get a task done to meet the requirements. I've given this a lot of thought. I think we (my country) should pass on the Beijing Olympics.

4/6/2008:

In the past, I always wanted to believe the Olympics were about the top athletes in the world getting a chance to compete against each other in good spirit. A primal celebration of peak fitness and achievement. But they aren't. They ARE political.

It finally hit me today that athletes compete on teams of nations. Not simply as individuals who are the best of their sport. A truly non-political event wouldn't take nationality into account. So it DOES matter if the government of the host nation is currently committing gross and blatant human rights abuses in Tibet (for starters).

Two points for the record. One: To a third of the planet's human beings, this is not about you. It's about the behavior of the Chinese government. Two: I'm aware of the hypocrisy of saying this as a U.S. citizen. I know my government isn't squeaky clean either. Dick Cheney, Guantanamo, etc. But screw it. We should boycott the 2008 Olympics.

8/16/2008 update:

I have to say that I'm glad the focus seems to have been primarily on the athletes this past week, that they get this window of time for them. It's been a pleasure to see such excellent athleticism, from Phelps' triumph to Torres' inspirational prowess to Bolt's power to Nastia's grace, etc. and I actually watched and enjoyed the entire women's marathon.
