Late in the evening, as the Makar Sankranti sun sets, the
night festivities begin. People release paper lamps from their terraces. The sky is now filled with floating lights. Our necks ache as we try to take in the spectacle around. It is a surreal moment.

Kite flying for Makar Sankranti is a family event. Entire families gather together on the terraces, roofs or any other part of their house exposed to the sky. Those not busy flying are busy in preparing the kites. The kite contests are very intensely fought. It requires a lot of concentration to not lose sight of your kite. Controlling the flight and motion of the kite so high up, is no easy task. The kite that flies the tallest is the star of the day!

As one leaves Rajgad, one has to negotiate this patch. In summer time it is totally exposed, it gets a bit more funny to get down.
We decided to break our trek to Torna into two parts, 1st part to halt midway of the route and cover the other half the next day.

Gangasagar is a Hindu place of pilgrimage. Every year on the day of Makar Sankranti (January 14), hundreds of thousands of Hindus gather to take a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganges and the Bay of Bengal. This picture was taken a few days later; animals come by to look for leftovers.

*St Andrew Square was built in 1770 and is part of the New Town design.The centrepiece of the Garden is the fluted column of the Melville Monument,commemorating Henry Dundas,1st Viscount Melville,a politician described as the uncrowned king of Scotland.
Its construction has a literary link as the grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson,the world-famous author and poet, was a lighthouse engineer,and he was consulted about the foundations for the 150ft monument when it was built in 1823.
*In the 1780’s, during the Scottish Enlightenment period,St Andrew Square was free from the inconveniencies of the old city and was the most fashionable address in the New Town.
On 4th April 2008,the Garden with the wonderful pool and the pathways around,opened to the public for the first time in 230 years and dedicated space to Poetry.

Il piccolo borgo di Makari gode di una posizione davvero unica, arroccato sui rilievi della Valle degli Ulivi si affaccia sul golfo omonimo a pochi minuti dalla spiaggia di Baia Santa Margherita e dalle calette di ciottoli più belle della zona. La costa, rocciosa e frastagliata, è ricca di piccole insenature dove è possibile in estate fare il bagno. Qui si trova la cala del Bue Marino, eletta spiaggia più amata dagli italiani nel 2016 da LegAmbiente.
Wie der Zoo Duisburg heute mitteilte wurde der Tiger El Roi am Freitag den 30. Sept. 2022 eingeschläfert.
El-Rois motorische Fähigkeiten waren aufgrund seines für eine Raubkatze hohen Alters von 18 Jahren stark eingeschränkt gewesen, auch sein Appetit habe zuletzt nachgelassen.
Da sich sein Zustand in der letzten Woche altersbedingt deutlich verschlechtert hatte, entschlossen sich die behandelnden Tierärztinnen gemeinsam mit den betreuenden Tierpflegerinnen zu dem schweren, aber unvermeidbaren Schritt, El-Roi gehen zu lassen", schreibt der Zoo auf seiner Facebook Seite.
El Roi wurde am 27. Mai 2004 im Münchner Tierpark Hellabrunn geboren und lebte seit 2006 in Duisburg. Gemeinsam mit seiner Partnerin Dasha sorgte er mehrfach für Nachwuchs. Während Makar und Arila (beide Jahrgang 2016) schon seit längerer Zeit in anderen Zoos ein neues Zuhause gefunden haben, leben seine jüngsten Kinder Kasimir und Malinka (beide Jahrgang 2021) noch in Duisburg.

El Roi, I will miss you
As the Duisburg Zoo announced today, the tiger El Roi was euthanized on Friday, September 30, 2022.
El-Roi's motor skills were severely limited due to his high age of 18 for a big cat, and his appetite had recently decreased.
"Since his condition had deteriorated significantly in the past week due to his age, the treating veterinarians, together with the attending animal keepers, decided to take the difficult but unavoidable step of letting El-Roi go," the zoo writes on its Facebook page.
El Roi was born on May 27, 2004 in Munich's Hellabrunn Zoo and has lived in Duisburg since 2006. Together with his partner Dasha, he repeatedly provided for offspring. While Makar and Arila (both born in 2016) have long since found a new home in other zoos, his youngest children Kasimir and Malinka (both born in 2021) still live in Duisburg.
