There are over 90 species of sundew. The majority are found in Australia and South Africa, but they also grow in hot, humid areas of Georgia, Florida and other similar climates. The plants prefer acidic soils and are usually where there is a bog or marsh and often grow on top of sphagnum moss.

A male Ruffed Grouse displaying for three hens perched up in a Balsam Fir Tree in the Hersey Lake Conservation Area located in the Township of Tisdale in the City of Timmins Northeastern Ontario Canada

Description

The scientific name for the Ruffed Grouse is Bonasa umbellus. Both terms are from the Latin: Bonasa means good when roasted and umbellus, a sunshade. This refers to the ruff or dark-coloured neck feathers that are particularly large in the male. When he is in display before the female, these are erected and surround his head almost like an umbrella. By nodding his head and ruffs, and spreading his tail and strutting, the male identifies himself to the female and encourages her advances.

The male Ruffed Grouse is about the size of a bantam chicken and weighs about 500 g. The females are smaller. Unlike the chicken, the grouse has a broad flat tail that is usually held down but that may be erected and spread into a half circle.

The dappled and barred plumage ranges in colour from pale grey through sombre red to rich mahogany. In the east, most grouse are predominantly grey, although some are red. Greys are in the majority in the central parts of the continent, and on the west coast most grouse are reddish brown.

The colours worn by the grouse are related to their habitat: the dark-coloured grouse inhabit dark forest, as on the coast; grey grouse live in lighter bush. This camouflage helps protect the grouse from their predators.

Males are hard to tell from females at a distance, but they are larger with larger ruffs and a longer tail. In the male the broad band of dark colour in the tail is usually unbroken.

The Ruffed Grouse is frequently called the “partridge.” This leads to confusion with the Gray, or Hungarian, Partridge, which was introduced to Canada from Europe. The Ruffed Grouse is only distantly related to the Gray Partridge, which is a bird of open areas, not woodlands.

The Beachcomber or ‘Stone Me’ and Others

I have over the years come across a few of these stone characters, and not only confined to the East Coast of England where I found the majority. They have been discovered in The States, France and Kent. A bit of a random order I know. Some have come home with me but in the main I have left them in situ. No stones were harmed in the making of these images and the ones who did come home did it willingly.

There has been a development, I have noticed faces looking at me embedded in other materials. I know, a bit left field. But I thought they needed to be identified. I haven’t yet seen any walls with ears but you never know. Is ‘Big Brother’ still watching?

Sleeping in the mountains in Ibitirama

It is the point chosen by the majority to spend the night before going up to Pico da Bandeira on the Espírito Santo side. It is well structured, has sinks and benches, male and female toilets, a clean and organized area for the tents, wooden tables and benches spread out for visitors. It has no electric light. A good point of support for resting before the climb, for sure, but if it gets too cold during the night, don't hesitate to follow the advice of the locals: go inside the toilets, you'll certainly be more sheltered and protected from the cold. Also beware of the raccoons that frequent the place looking for food.

PS 1 Don't forget to pack food well to avoid unpleasant surprises.

PS 2 The fogs come very fast. We didn't have sunset that day. On the one hand, it was good, as we did the reconnaissance trails without sun.

Commonly known as moth orchids, is a genus of about seventy species of orchids in the family orchid. Orchids in this genus are monopodial epiphytes or lithophytes with long, coarse roots, short, leafy stems and long-lasting, flat flowers arranged in a flowering stem that often branches near the end. Orchids in this genus are native to India, China, Southeast Asia, New Guinea and Australia with the majority in Indonesia and the Philippines. A few to many, small to large, long-lasting, flat, often fragrant flowers are arranged on erect to hanging racemes or panicles. The sepals and petals are free from and spread widely apart from each other. The lateral sepals are usually larger than the dorsal sepal and the petals much wider than the sepals. The labellum is joined stiffly to the column and has three lobes. The side lobes are erect and more or less parallel to each other and the middle lobe sometimes has a pair of appendages or antennae. 54107

White-tailed Deer fawns are born April through July, with the majority of fawns born in June. Most first-year does will have one fawn each year, but twins or triplets are typically seen thereafter. Until they are strong enough to keep up with their mothers, deer fawns are left alone while their mothers go off to feed.

As the deer runs to escape it wags its tail from side to side to show this white flag to alert other deer of a potential threat. Male deer are called bucks; females are called does; babies are called fawns; and young deer are called yearlings.

It wasn’t until I started going through my ties to choose one to wear for an event a few days ago that I realised just how many feature a dot of some sort. Geometrical shapes featured heavily with parallel lines and circles in the majority! So this is just an interesting trio incorporating dots in the design.

There are over 7,000 wasp species living in the UK, comprising a huge variety of solitary and social species. The majority are parasitoids, which have young that eat insects or spiders alive. However, the most commonly seen wasps are the black and yellow social species.

Colonies of social wasps are considered annoying pests - they often nest in manmade structures and deal out painful stings if you get too close. Yet despite our grievances, the ecosystem actually relies on these underappreciated insects.

So what are the benefits of wasps?

Natural pest control

Wasps are probably best known for disrupting summer picnics, but they are actually very important in keeping the ecosystem balanced.

Without wasps, the world could be overrun with spiders and insects. Each summer, social wasps in the UK capture an estimated 14 million kilogrammes of insect prey, such as caterpillars and greenfly. Perhaps we should be calling them a gardener's friend.Wasps are generally apex predators - so if they're not doing well, it indicates that there is something wrong with the world.'

Wasps are hugely beneficial to their native ecosystems due to the sheer amount of insects they capture. But their voracious appetites can cause problems if a species spreads or is introduced to new areas and their numbers aren't kept under control, such as in New Zealand, where there are no native social wasps.

'Where common and German wasps have been accidentally introduced to New Zealand, they've been stripping caterpillars out of forests. This is having a huge ecosystem impact and the native birds have been declining.'

What do wasps eat?

Adult wasps don't eat the prey they kill - they feed it to their young. Social species capture insects, chop them up and carry parts back to the nest.

Some solitary species are more sinister. For example, most spider wasps paralyse arachnid prey using a venomous sting. Their larvae then eat the victim alive. There are almost 5,000 species of spider wasp worldwide, including 44 species in Britain.Wasps use their venomous sting to subdue prey and defend their nest. They also use it to defend themselves.

Wasps sometimes sting us as they see us as a probable threat, even if we don't really pose one.

Unlike honey bees, wasps don't lose out by stinging us. Honey bees sacrifice their lives as their stings have a set of tiny barbs that hook into the skin.

'Honey bees have weak attachments in their abdomen. So when it pulls away the sting remains attached to you and it basically pulls away the entire muscle system around the sting. It's a bit brutal,' explains Gavin.

Wasps have smooth stings that can easily be pulled out of the skin by the insect - with the exception of a few South American species. If they run out of venom, they simply make more.

Sea otters spend the majority of their day taking it easy, resting by floating on their backs. Groups or "rafts" of sea otters congregate in calm, quiet waters. The highest number of sea otters recorded in such a raft totaled over two thousand animals - that would have been quite a sight to see!

This one would float peacefully, stretch a bit and preen, then resume the "position." Sounds like a great way to spend a lazy, Friday afternoon!

Have a blessed weekend! Thank you so much for your views and comments! They are greatly appreciated!

"A record-setting polar vortex, which brought intense cold to a majority of the American heartland, has led to massive blackouts in Texas as significant amounts of generating capacity have been knocked offline."

It was an emotional roller-coaster for a lot of us since Monday. Instead of a planned 15-45 minutes rolling blackouts, only a fixed number of locations were picked for prolonged (days) blackouts during the coldest days throughout TX. Some homes had no power nor water, some had power but no water, but many never had an outage. Was it fair?

We don't mind helping out by enduring some inconveniences, but we don't want to be the only ones who bore the pain, for days!

On top of no power, our area also experienced a sewer plant outage and a brief period of natural gas outage.

The roads were icy in parts, numerous road closures, traffic lights out, businesses/gas stations closed, water and food shortage for many, the frigid temperature, the freezing rain, some burned furniture to stay warm, etc. etc.. The past 3 days was one big nightmare, one thing piled on top of another.

However, we were "lucky" considering our lowest temperature was only at ~18F (-7C). Dallas/Fort Worth area saw a low temperature of 1F (-17C). When we got our power back, our inside temperature registered at 49F (9C). What would theirs be?

There were many houses damaged by frozen water pipes, at least one burned down probably from using the fireplace to get warm, a family died from carbon monoxide poisoning by running the car inside their garage.

The list goes on and on...

So, what's the "beauty" of a blackout? Perhaps just a clearer view of the night sky!

A very sad experience that I wish no one on earth will ever have to go through, but I'm not holding my breath.

Happy to report that by late last night some of us here in Houston got our power restored for good, and our internet connection was restored a short while ago.

Temperature is gradually climbing back up to normal for the state of TX.

However, the Northeast is having a snow storm right now.

Thanks for reading my vent; may you have a wonderful day, stay warm and be safe!

Carolina wrens are active during the day and spend the majority of their time on or near the ground searching for food, or in tangles of vegetation and vines. They also probe bark crevices on lower tree levels or pick up leaf-litter in order to search for prey. Carolina wrens are wary and are more often heard than seen. When on the ground, they move in jerky hops pillaging through various objects, whether man-made or natural. While moving abruptly, they pause momentarily for chattering or singing. When stationary, they move in twitched motions, jerking their breast around. They also sun- or sand-bathe. Other movements involve being capable of crawling like a creeper and hanging upside-down like a nuthatch. Their flights are generally of short duration, rapid, low-leveled, and wavelike. They are also capable of flying vertically from the base of a tree to the top in a single wing assisted bound. After finding a mate, pairs maintain their territory throughout the year, moving around and foraging together. Both males and females give out alarm calls, but only males sing to advertise territory. Males alone produce the 'cheer' call, which can sound indistinct. In southern regions of their range, the sound males use in alarm disputes is a ringing 'pink' or 'p'dink' sound. Females are the only ones that can perform the paired 'dit-dit' or chatter sounds often used in territorial disputes with predators. The chatter is used exclusively with territorial encounters with male song, and the song can either follow or overlap her mate's song.

The great majority of Summer Tanagers head south into Central and northern South America in the Fall. Very few stay behind like this individual seeing today. The only time I don't ever see them where I live is in the Summer. Maybe this should be called "Tri-seasonal Tanager" for South Florida:)

Unlike the majority of my work, this photo does not start with a story. I prefer to begin with a story or idea, because it helps me figure out what to include and conversely, what to exclude in the final result. Take for example this shot that is more a matter of combining shapes and curves to create a pleasing image. The curving sandy shore, the stoic tree silhouettes, and the distant fading mountains. Attempting to balance these elements, then wait for the evening light, resulted in a challenge onto its own. .

Suffice it to say, while the leading line of the curve takes one into the shot, the rest aids in attempting to balance it. However, this leaves me less satisfied with the final product. Fulfilling the parameters of photographic design, may result in a pleasing picture, but it is less fulfilling. Instead, it is more like discovering a uniquely shaped bottle, than enjoying its contents when we hunger from an insatiable appetite.

The MG A sports car was produced by MG from 1955 to 1962. The MG A replaced the MG TF 1500 Midget and represented a complete styling break from MG's earlier sports cars. The car was officially launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show. A total of 101,081 units were marketed through the end of production in July 1962, the vast majority of which were exported. 5869 cars were sold on the home market, and the MG A was replaced by the MG B.

This 1957 registered MG A, RVE 404, is seen waiting to join a major road in Worcestershire.

This species of the sparrow family spends the majority of its life on the ground where they hop around scratching for insects and seeds. Even around bird feeders they much prefer cleaning up seed on the ground that has been cast out by other species versus perching on the feeder.

Coniferous forests or mixed woodlands will suffice for a breeding territory for this hardy species and a committed pair will raise one or two broods each summer between May and August. A nest can be found on the ground under some protecting vegetation and the 3 - 5 egg clutch will be incubated for 12 or 13 days. At the end of the summer most juncos will migrate south but a number will spend the winter here and forage under our backyard feeders.

There are reportedly some 16 subspecies of juncos and some wintering flocks will contain a number of them and subspecies will interbreed at random. One subspecies is the slate-colored group with slate-colored heads, breasts and underparts with the females often having reddish-brown flanks leading me to believe this bird is a female member of the slate-colored group.

The majority is not always right and conventional wisdom is not always wise. Dead fish go with the flow. Live fish swim against the current. So it is with conscience and courage. So it is with the children of Abraham. They are prepared to challenge the idols of the age.

A passage migrant to India that is seen for maybe a month and half during Sep/Oct. This roller migrates from Europe / Central Asia to Africa and the vast majority of birds cross the Mediterranean I believe and make way down South. But the ones from Central Asia / Iran / Pakistan, make their way to India, rest there for a short while, gather energy and then fly to Africa over the Arabian Sea flying a couple of days non-stop. Wikipedia notes a record of a European Roller in a plane hit over the Arabian Sea. The behaviour is similar to the Common Cuckoo which also has a similar migratory pattern.

I was trying to get a decent shot of the bird for over 3 years and finally was able to some fantastic shots. The bird was very cooperative and gave us a lot of time. It suddenly landed on this perch very close to us, and when it took off quickly, I missed most of the flight, but managed to grab a few 8K shots like this one.

The majority of farmers in Thailand are very poor. Farm implements and machinery are very expensive. Henceforth the "E-tak", locally made trucks with Kubota diesel engines ranging from 12.5 to 14 horsepower. They are named for the sound they make as they lumber down the road. Made by various manufacturers, each one looks different and many are decorated in various Thai motifs (but not this one.) No doubt these vehicles are the cheapest thing available to the farmers.

California Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus beecheyi)

As far as I can tell, this one left the safety of ground cover to warm in the morning sun.

"The California ground squirrel can be found in south central Oregon, western Washington and most parts of California... The majority of the California ground squirrel's diet is made up of plant parts like leaves, stems, flowers, seeds, berries and fruits. Occasionally, it will eat insects and small animals... The California ground squirrel is diurnal, that means it is most active in the daytime. It lives in colonies, but the squirrels tend not to socialize with each other. Several squirrels may share a burrow, but they each will have their own entrance. Burrows are made under a tree, log or rock. The California ground squirrel can climb trees, but it spends most of its time on the ground."

The peony is a perennial flower. The majority of peony flowers are hybrids, classified as deciduous tree peonies or herbaceous peonies. The flowers on both varieties come in a wide assortment of hues and colors, including pink, red and pure white.

The peony is a showy, frilly and fragrant flower that comes in single or double varieties. The plants are thickly leaved and have large, deep green leaves. The peony possesses a tuberous root system.

Grown mainly as a decorative plant, the peony also has potential medicinal benefits. According to the journal Experimental Neurology, peony root has shown to be effective in treating neuron damage.

Fun Fact...The peony grows wild in many regions of Europe. The Romans introduced it to England around the year 1200.

Abū ‘Abd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Ismā‘īl ibn Ibrāhīm ibn al-Mughīrah ibn Bardizbah al-Ju‘fī al-Bukhārī 19 July 810 – 1 September 870), or Bukhārī, commonly referred to as Imam al-Bukhari or Imam Bukhari, was a Persian Islamic scholar who was born in Bukhara (the capital of the Bukhara Region (viloyat) of Uzbekistan). He authored the hadith collection known as Sahih al-Bukhari, regarded by Sunni Muslims as one of the most authentic (sahih) hadith collections. He also wrote other books such as Al-Adab al-Mufrad.

Imam al-Bukhari was the great theologian of the East. He collected and recorded about 600 thousand hadith, i.e. legend based on cases of life or some sayings of the Prophet. Out of them, al-Bukhari selected as “flawless” about 7400 hadith to include into the famous “As-Sahih” which became the second most important book after the Koran for the majority of Sunni.

The mausoleum of Imam al-Bukhari presents in all of its magnificence. In the complex that occupies a vast territory, there are mausoleums, mosques, hotel for tourists and pilgrims, souvenir shops and religious literature.

The mausoleum of Imam al-Bukhari is one of the main pilgrimage sites in Uzbekistan. The visiting of three shrines in Samarkand – the mausoleums of al-Bukhari, Shakhi-Zinda and Rukhabad – within one day, is called “small Hajj”.

The Church of St Germanus at Rame in the far south-east of Cornwall dates from the 13th century and was consecrated in 1259. It is believed to have been built on earlier foundations, and there are Norman remains here. The church is unusual for two reasons. Firstly, unlike the vast majority of Cornish churches it actually features a spire, and secondly it is lit by candles as it has no electricity. The tall candle holders with their candy-twist stripes can be seen at the end of each pew, while candle holders also hang from the ceiling. There is also a row of them along the top of the rood screen.

A south aisle was added in the early 16th century. The wagon roof of the aisle is original, and from the same period are several carved bench ends.
