A variety of VIA Rail equipment is seen at the Montreal Maintenance Centre from a passing REM train.
A female bordered mantis (I think Stagmomantis limbata) grooming. This is the time of year we find adults in our yard. In this species, the females don't fly (although they have wings, they're not big enough to get them airborne), so if I spot one I can usually find it again. They are usually either green or brown, but sometimes have markings that are pink or even purple. Photographed on a black background then released where found -- in the garden right outside my front door.
Deep within Healy Canyon carved by the Nenana River the southbound coal train twists and turns in every way imaginable. This section of the railroad is prone to all kinds of maintenance headaches and is often the cause of a service disruption like the one that occurred earlier this year. This is a bit of hike all down hill until the train passes then it is all uphill back to your car.

This photo was taken at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station during the 2014 Winter season.
South Pole Station has a variety of vehicles that need a place to be serviced and stowed. Inside this arch is just that. Its a maintenance facility where tons of supplies are kept, vehicles are serviced and during the winter, kept warm when not in use.
This arch is next to the Logistics Arch.

CCGS Samuel Risley[note 1] is a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker and buoy tender assigned to the Great Lakes area (Central and Arctic Region). Lead ship of her class, the vessel is named after Samuel Risley, the 19th century maritime inspector and first head of Board of Steamship Inspectors for Upper Canada and Ontario.[1] Based in the Great Lakes, CCGS Samuel Risley is responsible for keeping an ice-free passage between Port Colborne, Ontario and Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Ordered in 1983, the ship was launched in 1984 by Vito Steel Boat & Barge Limited at their yard in Delta, British Columbia with the yard number 161.[3][6][7] The vessel was completed on 4 April 1985.[5][6] After completion, the ship sailed to eastern Canada, transiting the Panama Canal and deploying to the Great Lakes.[4] The ship is assigned to the Central Region, based at Parry Sound, Ontario.
The E-L unit was going to Elkhart for maintenance and this is only the second time I've seen this unit. The last time it came through was close to seven years ago. This was taken at Brimfield, Indiana on the NS Chicago Line.
