Brant/Brent Goose - Branta bernicla
The brant, or brent goose (Branta bernicla), is a species of goose of the genus Branta. The black brant is a pacific North American subspecies.
It used to be a strictly coastal bird in winter, seldom leaving tidal estuaries, where it feeds on eel-grass (Zostera marina) and the seaweed, sea lettuce (Ulva). On the east coast of North America, the inclusion of sea lettuce is a recent change to their diet, brought about by a blight on eelgrass in 1931. This resulted in the near-extirpation of the brant. The few that survived changed their diet to include sea lettuce until the eelgrass eventually began to return. Brants have maintained this diet ever since as a survival strategy. In recent decades, it has started using agricultural land a short distance inland, feeding extensively on grass and winter-sown cereals. This may be behavior learned by following other species of geese. Food resource pressure may also be important in forcing this change, as the world population increased over 10-fold to 400,000-500,000 by the mid-1980s, possibly reaching the carrying capacity of the estuaries. In the breeding season, it uses low-lying wet coastal tundra for both breeding and feeding. The nest is bowl-shaped, lined with grass and down, in an elevated location, often near a small pond.
The brant goose is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds applies.

Lagangarbh Hut is situated north of Buachaille Etive Mor near the River Coupall. It is owned by the National Trust for Scotland and has been occupied and maintained by the Club since 1946. It was extensively refurbished in 1994.
The hut is a former crofters cottage that is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland and is available to rent for visitors who really do want to get away from it all.
Typically with central entrance hall and stairs ahead, two rooms up and down, left and right. The roofing is still the local Ballachulish slate which covered much of Scottish housing. The walls are of thick stone, built to withstand the battering of gales.
This gorgeous tree used to have a perfect crown. It lost its leading vertical branch and now appears split. On a gloomy day I could not help but feel a bit blue for the tree.
I'm on the mainland of Menominee Park looking across Millers Bay toward Ame's Point at the end of the breakwater that protects the bay on the left. Monkey Island is on the right. Immediately to the lower left is the Millers Bay Restoration Site, a project that is restoring and maintaining native prairie vegetation on the lakeshore.

The two forms of black-tailed deer that occupy coastal woodlands in the Pacific Northwest of North America are subspecies of the mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). They have sometimes been treated as a species, but virtually all recent authorities maintain they are subspecies. The Columbian black-tailed deer is found in western North America, from Northern California into the Pacific Northwest of the United States and coastal British Columbia in Canada. The Sitka deer is found coastally in British Columbia, southeast Alaska, and southcentral Alaska (as far as Kodiak Island).
These two subspecies thrive on the edge of the forest, as the dark forest lacks the underbrush and grasslands the deer prefer as food, and completely open areas lack the hiding spots and cover they prefer for harsh weather. One of the plants that black-tailed deer browse is western poison oak, despite its irritant content. This deer often is most active at dawn and dusk, and is frequently involved in collisions with automobiles. (Wikipedia)
This is the Columbian sub-species. Based on maps of sightings in iNaturalist, the Sitka sub-species is not found on Vancouver Island.
There were three deer roaming the parking lot at our hotel. They then just ambled across the road to the flower beds on the other side, totally oblivious to the traffic. Thankfully, no collisions ensured.

The Dr. Eugene Clark Library is in Lockhart, Texas. When I wasn't taking pictures of commodes..:) I was taking architecture pictures. Lockhart isn't a large city but it has some great looking old buildings. Here's some info on it:
This unique and historically significant building was built with a $10,000 bequest from Dr. Eugene Clark. Dr. Clark was a native of New Orleans, and his father died on the battlefield during the Civil War when Dr. Clark was only three.
In 1896, Dr. Clark left Lockhart to study in London and Vienna. In 1897 he returned to Texas to set up practice in San Antonio in his new specialty -- ear, nose and throat. While practicing in San Antonio, Dr. Clark became very ill. He went to New York for surgery. On his way to New York he came through Lockhart to see his old friends. In New York his condition was pronounced incurable and he left to return to the only home he had known in New Orleans.
On his death bed, with Mr. Purcell and Miss Young by his side he dictated a will specifying that the citizens of Lockhart should have a library and lyceum. His will left $10,000 to the people of Lockhart, of which $6,000 was to be used for construction, $1,000 to buy books and the remainder was to be put in a trust to maintain the building and purchase new books.

Sergey Tabachnikov (born April 17, 1987, Samara, USSR) - guitarist, musician, leader of the Nobody.one group. Without any musical education, he became one of the most popular guitarists in the country.
Tabachnikov plays compositions that are completely different in style. But critics and viewers alike agree that his work is nevertheless closer to instrumental and blues rock. He began playing the guitar at the age of 11. Sergei is self-taught, he does not advise others to use the services of teachers, believing that if you wish, you can learn to play on your own.
Sergey Tabachnikov, in addition to his musical career, maintains his blog on YouTube, in which he uploads reviews of guitars and accessories to them. The videos are very popular among both novice musicians and professionals due to their interesting presentation style and specific humor.
Sergey takes the performances of his group more than seriously. The funny guy from the video about guitars disappears somewhere and a professional musician appears on the stage who completely surrenders to playing the guitar.
The Nobody.one group is actively touring Russia and the CIS countries, participating in many festivals, including the invasion. However, speaking of popularity, unfortunately, the group is known only to a narrow circle of viewers, but we hope this situation will change soon, and the general public will learn about the talented guys and their leader!
The frontal portion of St. Vitus Cathedral situated within the Prague Castle complex. Great example of Gothic architecture and is the most important church in the Czech Republic. The present day cathedral was founded in 1344 and contains the chapel of St. Wenceslas where the relics of the Saint are kept. Some Renaissance and Baroque elements were later introduced as the building was completed. The cathedral is now owned and maintained by the Czech government.
Kinderdijk maybe a show for tourists and history lesson for Dutch kids but it also a home village for the 15 families that live in the mills leaving all but 4 of Kinderdijks 19 mills inhabited.
The park keeps two of the uninhabited windmills on display as museum exhibits and they are staffed by wooden clog wearing staff millers that give a fascinating overview of the innerworkings of the mills.
As fun and unique as living in an UNESCO site would be there is a practical purpose to the occupation of the mills in Kinderdijk and that is maintenance, the mill are much easier to maintain if they are kept functional and that requires someone to release the sails and run the machinery when the conditions require it.
The children of the mills are taught from a very young age to avoid the wind sails that may come as close as 30cm from the ground when in operation, these type of mills are called bonnet mills and the top portion rotates with wind direction.

I liked this one of the gallinules and did a photoshop treatment of mainly the water. I tried to maintain the integrity of the original and add something to spice up one of the most common species in my area.
* Given that Spurn Point is relatively close to Hull I guess it's surprising I do not go there often. It is the oddest and wildest part of East Yorkshire with huge skies. However I find it too desolate to really enjoy, though some of my friends who are serious birders love it . This shot was taken on the narrowest parts of the spit. On the left hand side is the North Sea and on the right the waters of the Humber estuary . The little wooden cabin is a shelter in case a high tide cuts you off from the mainland which is not uncommon. You can see the lighthouse which is about four miles further along the spit.
Its a hard place to describe so I will borrow some text from the Yorkshire wildlife trust .

Spurn Point (or Spurn Head as it is also known) is a narrow sand spit on the tip of the coast of the East Riding of Yorkshire, that reaches into the North Sea and forms the north bank of the mouth of the Humber estuary. It is over 3 miles long, almost half the width of the estuary at that point, and as little as 50 yards wide in places. The southernmost tip is known as Spurn Head or Spurn Point and is the home to an RNLI lifeboat station and disused lighthouse. It forms part of the civil parish of Easington.
Spurn Head covers 280 acres above high water and 450 acres of foreshore. It has been owned since 1960 by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and is a designated National Nature Reserve, Heritage Coast and is part of the Humber Flats, Marshes and Coast Special Protection Area.
The peninsula is made up from sand and shingle as well as Boulder Clay eroded from the Holderness coastline washed down the coastline from Flamborough Head. Material is washed down the coast by longshore drift and accumulates to form the long, narrow embankment in the sheltered waters inside the mouth of the Humber estuary. It is maintained by plants, especially Marram grass . Waves carry material along the peninsula to the tip, continually extending it; as this action stretches the peninsula it also narrows it to the extent that the sea can cut across it in severe weather. When the sea cuts across it permanently, everything beyond the breach is swept away, only to eventually reform as a new spit pointing further south. This cycle of destruction and reconstruction occurs approximately every 250 years. The now crumbling defences will not be replaced and the spit will continue to move westwards at a rate of 2 metres per year, keeping pace with the coastal erosion further north.

The Arizona State Capitol in Phoenix, Arizona, United States, was the last home for Arizona's Territorial government, until Arizona became a state in 1912. Initially, all three branches of the new state government occupied the four floors of the statehouse. As the state expanded the branches relocated to adjacent buildings and additions. The 1901 portion of the Capitol is now maintained as the Arizona Capitol Museum with a focus on the history and culture of Arizona. The Arizona State Library which occupied most of the 1938 addition until July 2017 re-opened in late 2018 as a part of the Arizona Capitol Museum.

There are stories that should not be forgotten... Well, perhaps we should never forget. From memories, from the past and from our history we learn. Today I begin to record the result of my investigations. A task that has taken me a year, a long year of wandering between the shelves of the Carnelian Archive, where all the Fairlands chronicles are kept. The dust, the smell of leather, paper and history have been my faithful companions in this search, which is now over. It was something personal, yes. It has already been lost in time and in the silence of my relatives over the years, but I needed to know the truth. And the truth, like a polished diamond with countless faces, is not as simple as they imagined. There is no good or bad, but a mixture of the two whose balance maintains the Universe. Anyway, this is not the time to ramble. I think I should pick up the scattered fragments, hinted at in these flickr posts, and tell the whole story, though maybe not the whole truth, who knows....

From it's most earliest days in the early 1900's to it's sad end in the mid 1950's Packard maintained a signature design element on their grill surrounds. Starting lower on the sides the grill surrounds would bump up and raise in the center, and you will find versions of this on every model of every Packard for every year of Packard's existence. When I first came upon the Reo in the photo the first thing I noticed was the Packard like grill surround, and thinking, in fact, that it was indeed a Packard. Well, that was only true until I noticed the emblem in the center with the letters R E O emblazoned on it. Like Packard in their day, Reo was considered somewhat of a luxury automobile, and as such, they were priced accordingly. I suspect, however, that they didn't have the same panache that Packard enjoyed. So, was the Packard like grill surround on this 1930 Reo a design coincidence, or could you say that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?" REO, the company, was founded by the former founder and owner of the Oldsmobile company, Ransom E. Olds (Notice the first letters in his name REO.) The company started in Lansing, Michigan, and had a long and somewhat successful history producing cars and trucks from 1905 to 1975. In 1936, Reo stopped producing cars in favor of devoting it's time to the end in 1975 to producing trucks.

Although truck orders during World War II enabled it to revive somewhat, the company remained unstable in the postwar era, resulting in a bankruptcy reorganization. In 1954, the company was still underperforming, and sold its vehicle manufacturing operations (the primary asset of the company) to the Bohn Aluminum and Brass Corporation of Detroit. Three years later, in 1957, Reo's vehicle manufacturing operation became a subsidiary of the White Motor Company. White then merged REO with Diamond T Trucks in 1967 to form Diamond Reo Trucks. In 1975, this company filed for bankruptcy and most of its assets were liquidated. Volvo later took over White and thus currently owns the rights to the REO brand name.

A Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeata) attempts to maintain its balance in the windy conditions while walking on the ice covered pond. The temperatures dropped to -10C on Sunday night and most of the ponds froze over in the area to the east of Tofield, Alberta, Canada so it it was investing times photographing these birds on the ice.

My daughter, Jessica, who lives in Estes Park, Colorado and turned 25 today, sent me a few photos of an unexpected group of celebrants who had gathered in her backyard to extend their best wishes. On closer inspection, you will note the bull of the elk herd in the upper right maintaining a rightful and appropriate distance from the females, no doubt making sure they behave properly and don't get rowdy.

Serenity is maintaining a sense of inner peace even in difficult situations. We gain serenity by accepting the things we cannot change and focusing our energy where we can make a difference.
Fear, anger or desire can create a sense of urgency that triggers us to react impulsively. When this happens, we risk undermining our goals, damaging relationships--even violating our deepest values. By contrast, when we cultivate serenity, we don’t fear our emotions, but we do keep them in balance. We govern ourselves rather than being ruled by external circumstances and our feelings about them.
Meditative practices, contemplation, physical exercise and self-regulation skills all can help us to maintain a serene, peaceful state of mind. This mental state in turn frees us to live thoughtfully and intentionally. When we hold onto our own sense of serenity, we help others to keep theirs.
From a distance it looks like a cathedral, but however it is the former long-distance transmitter "Radio Kootwijk" that maintained the radio traffic between the Netherlands and their former colony of Indonesia.
The "Cathedral" consists of concrete in which no iron or steel has been processed, so as not to disturb the radio signal.
The architect Julius Luthmann was inspired for the design by the German "Telefunken" broadcasting station and the Giza Sphinx, which can bee seen from the "front legs" that formed the entrance.
The "pond" in front of the building was the cooling water reservoir that the immense transformers and generators had to cool.

The Thamarassery-Lakkidi Ghat road, part of the National Highway [NH 212], which connects the region of Kerala south of Kozhikode district with Wayanad district. This scenic road is very well maintained and the view of the hills is a joy to behold.
Some Hadada ibis maintain a pair bonding throughout the year. Commonly, a female, with her wings half-open, approaches a male and touches her beak to his beak. After this brief mutual beak-to-beak touching, she resumes feeding elsewhere among the party. Billing behavior of pairs includes rattling of beaks up and down and side-to-side while nodding heads. When Atlanta built this octagon-shaped public library in 1908, it did so through community support rather than receiving a grant from the Carnegie Foundation as many other communities did at the time.
The library design combines the Neoclassical with an octagonal plan, an uncommon mixture of styles. The building's eight sides are all symmetrical except for the front, which is broken by a classical portico with Doric columns and a round arched entrance. The library is topped by a red tile roof.
The library was designed by Paul O. Moratz (1866-1939), a German-born architect who grew up and lived as an adult in nearby Bloomington, Illinois. Moratz is best remembered for his designs of concert halls, schools, libraries, hospitals, and private residences.
The Atlanta Public Library represents a well-maintained example of turn-of-the-century public construction, combining two significant architectural styles: the Octagon Mode and Neo-Classical Revival. The influence of Chicago's 1893-94 Columbia Exposition and the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo resulted in the widespread use of the Neo-Classical style in public and quasi-public buildings throughout the nation. The Octagon plan relates historically to the Octagon homes espoused by Orson Squire Fowler in the mid-1800s.

Wādī Banī Khālid is one of the best-known wadis in the Sultanate of Oman.[8] Its stream maintains a constant flow of water throughout the year. Large pools of water and boulders are scattered along the course of the wadi. As a geographical area, the wadi covers a large swathe of lowland and the Hajar Mountains.

Long-billed Thrasher (Toxostoma longirostre), Laguna Seca Ranch, Texas.This species is a resident of southern Texas and eastern Mexico, where it maintains territories in dense brushy habitats. In Texas, the Long-billed Thrasher is most common in dense brush in the lower Rio Grande River valley, but at least 95% of this habitat has been cleared.

Sayama Hill (狭山丘陵) is an inselberg or isolated hill like Ayers Rock in the middle of flat Musashino. It is like a green island in the densely populated Tokyo suburb.
Japanese animation movie titled Tonarino Totoro (となりのトトロ My Neighbor Totoro) directed by Hayao Miyazaki (宮崎駿) is a nostalgic story set in Sayama Hill in the 1960s when it was a typical rural area but it is not like the movie anymore.
Sayama Hill strides over several municipalities in Tokyo and Saitama prefectures. This photo was taken in Higashi-yamato city (東大和市), Tokyo.
It is a typical Satoyama (里山), traditional agroforestry, in which a forest is maintained according to the needs of neighbouring communities (里 Sato) that exploit its resources such as fire woods, construction material, food, fertiliser, etc.
