Ginkgo biloba ( Ginkgoaceae)

Ginkgo biloba, commonly known as ginkgo or gingko also known as the maidenhair tree.

Common name: Maidenhair tree.

Botanical name: Ginkgo biloba.

Family: Ginkgoaceae.

Taken at the Kirstenbosch conservatory, Cape Town, South Africa.

This is a closeup of the leaves of a Ginkgo bonsai in the Japanese Garden at Meijer Gardens.

I planted a Ginkgo in front of my house. It is a very uncommonly used shade tree in gardens here. I wanted to look at it every time I leave home, and every time I return. It reminds me of two important times in my life.

Mature Ginkgo trees grew across from my dormitory during my college days. I walked under them every day to get to class. I remember clearly looking up at them one day when a nearby radio played very loudly that President Kennedy was shot in Texas. Many years later, I saw Ginkgoes again during an educational study trip to Japan, a life-changing event for me.

If I ever move from this house, I will plant Ginkgos again.

Note: Ginkgo is not a native species of North America.

A tall and handsome Ginkgo tree in a bright yellow dress looked spectacular against blue sky with light clouds and the famous Royal Crescent hiding at the back, and with rusted leaves of a horse chestnut tree silhouetting at the top - couldn’t wait to see how this scene will look in B&W. Here in the Netherlands it's autumn with all its wonderful fall colours.

These are leaves of the Ginkgo tree, they are bright yellow but after you dry them they turn kind of brown.

This is 4 cm.

Happy Macro Monday.

The leaves are unique among seed plants, being fan-shaped with veins radiating out into the leaf blade, sometimes bifurcating (splitting), but never anastomosing to form a network. The old popular name "maidenhair tree" is because the leaves resemble some of the pinnae of the maidenhair fern. In the fall they are bright yellow. (wikipedia)

The Maidenhair Trees in Amsterdam's pretty Hortus have already lost their leaves. But here in Paris this one is golden against the blue sky. The tree was brought to Europe from the Far East in the 18th century, and I've mentioned it several times in this stream. It struck me as I was plodding up the hill that Maidenhair and Blue Sky in the present Advent remind of the Virgin whose designated color is blue.

PS Yes, that's the Sacre Coeur on the hill... The lady in red I don't know...

The Ginkgo biloba tree in our park was giving a lovely show at last week’s leaf sweeping session.

Budai Arborétum

Native to China, tree normally reaching a height of 20–35 m (66–115 ft). A combination of resistance to disease, insect-resistant wood and the ability to form aerial roots and sprouts makes ginkgos long-lived, with some specimens claimed to be more than 2,500 years old. Ginkgos are dioecious, with separate sexes, some trees being female and others being male. Male plants produce small pollen cones. Female plants produce fruit-like seeds. (Wikipedia)
