We had planted this Magnolia tree in memory of my father. He loved flowers. I think he would have liked this one!

Winter Magnolia Campbellii, Wellington Botanic Garden, New Zealand. A large tree from the sheltered valleys of the Himalaya growing to 30 metres (100 feet) with very large flowers (to 25 cm or 10 inches). This particular very large tree was planted in 1935 and first flowered in 1950.

The Magnolia tree is over 100 million years old. And is originally from China. The tree represents purity. At Buddhist temples there are Magnolias on either side of the entrance.

Magnolia has traditionally been used in Chinese folk medicine. The leaves are high in Honokiol and Magnolol. Substances that contain a stress and anxiety-reducing effect. They strongly lower the cortisol level (cortisol is the stress hormone). Magnolia is also known as a strong antioxidant.
