A first magnitude spring, over 100 million gallons of water gush forth daily at Manatee Springs. In winter, manatees swim upriver to spend the night in warm waters of the headspring.

Popular for snorkeling and scuba diving, the headwaters of the spring are also a great spot for swimming. The spring run forms a sparkling stream that meanders through hardwood wetlands to the Suwanee River.

In this picture, the reflections are very distorted, due to the fast current of the water in the run from the spring which gushes a few feet from where that picture was taken

Any fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius-and a lot of courage-to move in the opposite direction. Albert Einstein

There was a storm of enormous magnitude in the middle of the night Friday, July 21, 2006... my father's death anniversary. Lightning and thunder were rattling the house... power lines were falling. We had a power black out and suddenly the sound of everything electric stopped... fridge, tv, air conditioner and all we could hear was the panting of our shaking and shedding golden retriever, Halle Bop. She jumped on the bed... we heard the crashing of branches outside and it continued most of the night. Eventually the storm subsided and we fell asleep. The power did not return until the light of dawn.

The next morning, I discovered one of my outdoor assemblage pieces, an art sculpture, had been knocked over... felled by the storm. My large outdoor works are temporary... I am continually reinventing and reassembling them, season after season, and so I do not actually attach the parts together permanently, but only utilize gravity by stacking the elements. I was in the process of working on one and had just "finished" it for the summer. Although it was big, the storm was fierce enough to knock it over... all this on the night of my father's memorial anniversary.

There is no record of this assemblage (#4), in its previous incarnation... however, the collapsed version with a few very minor adjustments by me, yielded the collaboration between me and god.

The creative process continues... as I inspect and record the felled assemblage with my camera, thereby creating these inspired images.

I felt it was a fitting way for an artist to remember and honor their father's memory.

NASA’s InSight lander recorded a magnitude 4 marsquake last Dec. 24, but scientists learned only later the cause of that quake: a meteoroid strike estimated to be one of the biggest seen on Mars since NASA began exploring the cosmos. What’s more, the meteoroid excavated boulder-size chunks of ice buried closer to the Martian equator than ever found before – a discovery with implications for NASA’s future plans to send astronauts to the Red Planet.

Scientists determined the quake resulted from a meteoroid impact when they looked at before-and-after images from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) and spotted a new, yawning crater. Offering a rare opportunity to see how a large impact shook the ground on Mars, the event and its effects are detailed in two papers published Thursday, Oct. 27, in the journal Science.

Help Chile Overcome the Earthquake Chile stepped up efforts to find survivors of an earthquake registering 8.8 magnitude that struck before dawn yesterday, killing more than 700 people, severing the country’s main highway and damaging 1.5 million homes.

The eartquake was centered 200 miles (317 kilometers) southwest of Santiago near the main winemaking region and close to Concepcion, a metropolitan region of more than 500,000 people. Highways and airports were shut by damage and some copper mines closed. The total economic damage may be as much as $30 billion, or about 15 percent of the South American country’s gross domestic product, according to estimates by disaster- scenario modeler Eqecat Inc.

We need your help to overcome the earthquake.

Mercury (on the right) and Jupiter in a close conjunction just 1.3° apart but very low in the west in the evening twilight, on March 27, 2023. Taken from home in southern Alberta. Mercury was ascending higher each night, beginning its best evening apparition for the year, while Jupiter was dropping out of sight ending its months-long appearance. Jupiter was magnitude -2 this night, while Mercury was -1.4.

I will never forget this day in the desert and the way this storm swept through it. It was fast moving and I stood there with my hands freezing while the temperature dropped. It dropped so quickly, that it snowed in Scotsale that day.

The power behind the clouds and sunset and how it swept through was so incredible and is was sheer luck that I was there capture it. I have never had anything remotely close happen again like this, so I really got lucky that day.

So now, being able to work on this one in color, I just sit here in awe of that day. It was truly a time with such magnitude that it has never left me.

I wish more could see this one photo. I think it's spectacular!

Here is the spiral galaxy NGC 2683 in the constellation Lynx. If you look close, to the right of this glaxy is the galaxy PGC 2030408 at magnitude 16.8. I found a reference nicknaming NGC 2683 the UFO Galaxy, it is about 20 million light-years away from Earth.

10th magnitude NGC891 is thought to be a spiral galaxy(viewed edge on) very similar in size and luminosity to our own galaxy. Located approx 30ly away in the constellation of Andromeda, it is joined in this image by many apparently smaller and fainter galaxies. I counted around 20 when I was expecting only 7 of 14th and 15th magnitude so I must have captured several fainter than 15th magnitude.

Just a couple of shots to show the magnitude of the crowd yesterday for Earth Day Science March. Trump wants to defund the Environmental Protection Agency and has already loosened US Department of Agriculture (USDA) restrictions. In addition, there's been a growing laxation of what it means to have food qualified as organic. So, this effects the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. Trump doesn't believe in alternative energy and would rather bring back increased oil drilling, coal and other pollutants. He doesn't believe climate change exists and this will not only effect those living in America but those living throughout the world. He wants to ignore sound scientific data in favor of his billionaire buddies at Exxon, for example.

The idea that climate change is a partisan issue at this point is alarming. This is the Earth we all live in. It's not just the children of liberals that will be affected by these policies. Trump's own children will have to struggle to survive because of the damage he is doing. And yet, he continues to show wrath towards this planet and everyone on it. Impeach Trump!

On 13 April 1992, a magnitude 5.4 earthquake occurred near the town of Roermond at a focal depth of about 17 km (11 mi). This so-called Roermond earthquake was the strongest seismic event in Western Europe since 1756. Following this earthquake, the water levels of numerous wells located in the Lower Rhine Embayment showed significant coseismic anomalies. The Roer Valley, which crosses three countries (Belgium, The Netherlands, and Germany), is bounded by two north-northwest, south-southeast trending Quaternary normal fault systems. The eastern boundary is defined by the Peel boundary fault, along which the 1992 Roermond earthquake occurred, and the western boundary is defined by the Feldbiss fault zone, which is partly located in Belgium. Evidence of recent tectonic activity along the Feldbiss fault zone is visible on seismic profiles that show more than 600 m of offset in Neogene deposits. Although Ahorner demonstrated the existence of the Rhenish seismoactive zones and recommended a comprehensive analysis of Quaternary structures and background seismicity, coseismic movements were considered to be improbable and active faults remain largely unidentified.

NGC 2022 is a small planetary nebula found in the shoulder of the constellation Orion, it is roughly 6000 light-years away and is roughly ½ light-year across. The magnitude is listed as 12.0. I did manage to capture some details inside this PN.

Orion rising on December 28, 2019 with yellow-red Betelgeuse at centre dimmer than usual as it drops by nearly a magnitude from its normal brightness, during one of its occasional dim episodes as a long-period variable star. It is a red supergiant that varies between 0.0 and +1.3 magnitude. Here it definitely looks dimmer than yellow Aldebaran at top in Taurus, and blue-white Rigel at bottom in Orion. Betelgeuse loolks similar in brightness to blue Bellatrix to the right of Betelgeuse, with both stars forming the shoulders of Orion.

This is a stack of 4 x 1-minute tracked exposures plus a single exposure through the Kenko Softon A filter to add the star glows. All on the iOptron Sky Guider Pro and with the Canon EOS Ra and 35mm lens at f/2.5. Taken from home in Alberta.

Today a 7.9-magnitude earthquake hit central China. The official Xinhua News Agency said 8,533 people died in Sichuan province and more than 200 others were killed in three other provinces and the mega-city of Chongqing. The death toll is climbing every hour. It is a sad sad day.

StarryNightPro listed this globular at magnitude 10.56, I thought it would be a good test for my telescope.

From SpaceTelescope.org, “NGC 7006 resides in the outskirts of the Milky Way. It is about 135 000 light-years away, five times the distance between the Sun and the centre of the galaxy, and it is part of the galactic halo. This roughly spherical region of the Milky Way is made up of dark matter, gas and sparsely distributed stellar clusters.”

This image is composed of 16 x 15 second images at ISO 3200 with additional dark and bias frames. Tech Info: Meade LX90 12” telescope, Antares Focal Reducer, and Canon 6D camera. Imaging was done on August 3, 2016.

On 12 March 2006, we had a rare snowfall in Shingle Springs, California. The cats insisted on going outside and were a little distressed at the snow and how cold it was. Still, they had to thoroughly investigate it.

They didn't know, but almost exactly ten years late, they moved to Hokkaido, with significant orders of magnitude more snow than we ever got in California (at least at our elevation). However, now, they are not allowed outside under any circumstances without being in a cat carrier.

Bonkers appears to be smelling the snow prior to bravely walking out into it (for about a meter).

The brilliant planet Venus (aka “the morning star”) teamed up with the moon in the evening sky on April 26, 2020, with an angular distance of only 6.7° between them when shot.

The 35mm-equivalent focal length used was as short as 208 mm only (130 mm on an APS-C sensor), in order for both brightest objects to be simultaneously present in one frame, but not at the frame’s extreme far edges (for lens distortion to be kept within acceptable limits). Any larger magnification would separate the two celestial objects. Aldebaran was at a lower altitude than the moon and close to it, yet it was impossible to be included in the frame.

Of course, a beautiful seascape (or other aesthetically pleasing landscape) would have been included as interesting foreground for this shot (and a wide-angle lens would have been preferred), if the strict and totalitarian lock-down (preventing me from accessing the seaside) wasn’t imposed and enforced. At 21:37’, when this photograph was shot :

—Venus almost reached its peak brightness, glowing at a spectacular magnitude -4.23 at its crescent phase (almost “greatest illumination event”). The planet’s altitude was 23° 09’, azimuth 287° 16’ and its distance from Earth 0.46 AU.

—The waxing crescent Moon had a -8.78 visual magnitude, as it was only 12.4% illuminated, at a 20° 14’ altitude above horizon, 281° 13’ azimuth and at a 392,817 km distance from Earth.

Ivan Graziani was an Italian singer author of the first magnitude, excellent guitarist and designer. (In 1963, in Urbino, obtained his diploma in graphic arts) In 1964, with his schoolmates Velio Gualazzi and Walter Monacchi, he founded the Anonima Sound, the musical group with whom he began his artistic career. From 1970 to 1996 in over 26 years, with various record labels, he has recorded about 20 albums. Among his most famous and beloved songs, we remember "Firenze Canzone Triste" "Pigro" "Lugano Addio" "Monna Lisa". He has performed in countless live concerts and has collaborated with Italian artists such as Lucio Battisti, Premiata Forneria Marconi, Renato Zero, Antonello Venditti, Biagio Antonacci and Umberto Tozzi. It 'died in Novafeltria (Province of Rimini) due to an incurable disease. Several initiatives perpetuate the remembrance of the Great Ivan: there is in fact a continuous pilgrimage to his home, where he resides his wife Anna, while their sons, Tommaso and Filippo, go on in the musical activity, including in their concerts, also the pieces of the celebrated father.

Lugano Addio : youtu.be/-3KtATaeA9M

Farewell, Lugano

The white and blue tennis shoes

Heavy bosoms and red lips

And the trench coat

Oh, Marta, that's how I remember you

Your smile, your hair

Still as the lake 1

"Farewell, Lugano", you were singing 2

While holding my hand

"Sing with me", you said

And sing I did

About a place

I had never seen before

You, you talked to me about borders

Custom officers and smugglers

Your tales would warm me up

And "oh yes, my father", you said

"He fought the war here on the mountains"

And then you asked about mine

And I thought of home

My father, sitting on the beach

The nets hung up drying in the sun

The fishing boats on the high seas

Shells and stars

My father's cursing and his pain

Oh, Marta, that's how I remember you

Your smile and your hair

Still as the lake

"Farewell, Lugano", you were singing

While holding my hand

"Farewell", you were singing

And not out of fake naivety

You actually believed it

And now I believe in it too, now that I'm here

Oh, my Marta, farewell, that's how I remember you

Your smile and your hair

Still as the lake

•1.the Swiss city of Lugano lies on the shore of the homonymous lake.

•2."Addio a Lugano" is an anarchist song, written in 1895 by the Italian anarchic Pietro Gori, exiled from Switzerland after he arrived there running away from a sentence of an Italian judge. The song has been quite popular up to WW2, when its lyrics were readapted and sung by both fascists and partisans.

Engl. The stars in the frame are no more than the 6th (6m) stellar magnitude (many are 7m and even lower). Such stars would never be visible next to the bright disk of the Moon (-13m). But the total eclipse of the Moon revealed a rich stellar environment. Moreover, the difference in the speed of movement between the Moon and the stars allowed us to observe how the stars, "overtaking" the Moon, fade, hiding behind the western (right) border of the lunar disk and later rise above its eastern (left) border. It was amazing to watch the Moon sliding among the star field in a telephoto lens. I also remember the bright colors of the eclipse. When the brightness of the lunar disk decreased to -6m, the red-orange tint of the reflection of the Earth's atmosphere on the Earth's satellite clearly appeared. And at the border of the bright area, a blue stripe appeared, but it was heterogeneous: it was possible to discern a color gradient up to purple shades. The lunar eclipse delighted us with its amazingly beautiful colors! More photos and a more detailed description (sorry, but in Russian only) are available at the link

Rus.

A photo essay in 6 frames documenting my view of the approach of the biggest thunderstorm to hit Toronto since Hurricane Hazel in 1954. All images were shot off my balcony, looking North to the approach of the storm.

You can always tell by the colour of the clouds and the amount of darkness they contain that such as storm as this will be a big one, filled with danger and disaster.

Apart from the great extent of suffering and damage, chaos and disruption that these massive demonstrations entail I take joy in such monumental displays of nature. Every once in a while we humans need to be reminded that we are not the greatest power on Earth. The Earth and all her elements are.

Thunder and Electric storms and the super ionized air create uncanny lights that some would say indicates the presence of the gods. Indeed, with the massive power that was released with that storm and it's sheer, almost inconceivable magnitude, who would doubt it?!

Coyote Hills RP, Fremont, CA

Taken with the C14 and SBIG STXL-6303 at Cerritos College. The moon was still below the horizon, and the sky was cloudless enough for me to do guided shots. There's always moist air to the south from campus, though, and the limiting magnitude was 17.2 for this image. 16 30 s subframes were stacked to create this. An Antlia L filter was used. The position of the supernova is indicated with white line segments.

ASTAP gives a CV magnitude of 11.8

This was essentially maximum brightness for this supernova.

I realize now that I was not setting apertures properly in ASTAP, and all of my previous magnitude estimates are likely too faint.

SMSS J031300.36−670839.3

The apparently anonymous magnitude 15.4 star at the center of this field, from DESI LS DR10, is UCAC4 115-002803 in Hydrus, otherwise known as SMSS J031300.36−670839.3.

Nothing special if it had not been identified as a peculiar star with low metallicity. Indeed, it is the one with the lowest metallicity known so far (Jinmi Yoon et al 2016 ApJ 833 20) with a [Fe/H] ratio <−7.8!

For comparison, in other low metallicity stars, this ratio is on average 3. For just about ten it is between 4 and 5.

This star is therefore very ancient and has an age of 13.6 billion years, that is, it lit up when the Universe was just 200 million years old.

Despite its very low metallicity, it does not belong to the elusive Population III, i.e. the very first stars that formed directly from primordial matter and are responsible for the cosmic dawn.

Glencoe and the awesome drive through it.

A Barred Owl makes its way straight for me! The magnitude and majestic outstretched wings of this Barred Owl are awe-inspiring. The precision of the flight between trees and tree branches is every pilots dream to accomplish this type of flight precision! The silence this bird of prey has with flight is another important feature to allow them to sneak up on their prey. Fossils of the Barred Owl have been found dating back over 11,000 years. This lovely bird of prey stays in the same general area, typically not moving more than 6 miles away.

Owls are great at keeping the rodent population down. So the next time you want to buy that rat poison, think about an owl nest instead. The affect of using rat poison has now also decreased the population of owls. Specifically, the Barn owls (different than the Barred Owl, yet I would image this is for any owl) because the mother owl eats a rodent that has been poisoned, yet not dead, takes it back to the nest to feed the young and WAH-BAM! entire brood of baby Owls dead too. So next time you are at the store for poison, consider an Owl Nest Box.
