If you have a whole day in Kyoto, go to the Golden Pavillion (Ginkaku-ji), Koyumizu-Dera and Fushimi Inari Taisha. If you only have a couple of hours, only go to Fushimi Inari Taisha. Once you are past the crowds, you will experience calmness and magic from beyond this world. The thousands of vermillion torii gates in the lush green forest, how a sacral place entwine with nature - is beyond apprehension to me even two months later.
If I ever am able to go back to Japan, I'm definitely doing the hike again - it is that good. I loved every second of it - even the packed few hundred meters in the beginning, the huge spiders, how many times I needed to stop to catch my breath climbing. I'd even forgotten I found out my golden earring was missing while I was there.
