Ornithogalum dubium, common names sun star or star of Bethlehem, is a species of flowering plant in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae.

It is a South African endemic.

Ornithogalum is derived from the Greek words ornis meaning 'bird' and gala meaning 'milk'.

As it releases a white sap when damaged.

Ornithogalum species are known to be poisonous.

Magnolia grandiflora is very special.

Thanks to its large, shiny leaves, this evergreen tree is attractive all year round.

From May to September, this exotic-looking tree blooms with white, fragrant flowers, sometimes up to 25 cm in size.

A real eye-catcher!

An unusual evergreen, Magnolia grandiflora boasts large, leathery leaves with a glossy dark-green colour on top and a bronzed, furry underneath.

The gloriously huge, creamy flowers in summer (July/September) have a complex lemon perfume and look magnificent against the dark background.

Due to its evergreen nature and large flowers, this Magnolia is hugely popular.

AAAHHH, their season is coming!

Blooms, buds, petals, shadow and light, colour, joy, it has it ALL?

It is a herbaceous perennial plant growing to 45 cm tall, with simple or branched stems.

The basal leaves are three-lobed, with leaves higher on the stems more deeply divided; like the stems, they are downy or hairy.

The flowers are 3–5 cm diameter, variably red to pink, yellow, or white, with one to several flowers on each stem.

I am NOT a 'WORKAHOLIC'. I only constantly aim to see the end result!

"Just Joey" is a Hybrid Tea Rose and has a fruity fragrance ( to me it smells like ripe raspberries mmmmmm) which wafts from large ruffled salmon blooms, once opened.

This superstar rose is from England. Just Joey roses were inducted into the Hall of Fame by the World Federation of Rose Societies in 1994.

The flowers are well-formed with large, high-centred buds, supported by long, straight and upright stems.

Each blousy flower can grow to 8-12.5 cm wide. Hybrid Teas are the world's most popular type of rose by choice due to their colour and flower form.

With their long stems, it gives them the advantage, over others, as cut flowers.

Most shrubs tend to be very upright, reaching up to 1.8 metres and are recurrent-flowering (flowering constantly during the season, unlike wild dog roses that flower once).

Eschscholzia californica, the California poppy, golden poppy, California sunlight or cup of gold, is a species of flowering plant in the family Papaveraceae, native to the United States and Mexico.

Although the petals look waxy... they are silky soft.

The Peony is indigenous to China, but was imported to Japan so early it is difficult to be certain when the transplantation occurred.

It is a perennial plant with single flowers of white, red or pink which are born in late spring.

The peony was originally introduced as medicine.

In fact, its ancient Japanese name "Ebisugusuri" literally means ‘medicine from China’.

However, due to its beautiful and now mostly double blooms, in time, many decorative varieties were developed.

In Japanese society, it was seen both as a medicine and a source of beauty.

They are about to bloom!

Zantedeschia, usually erroneously called Calla or Arum lilies (only when big and white), they are not a true lily.

It is named after Italian botanist Francesco Zantedeschi.

The Zantedeschia species are very poisonous, capable of killing livestock and children.

All parts of the plant are toxic, and produce irritation and swelling of the mouth and throat, acute vomiting and diarrhea.

All species are endemic to southern Africa.

THE HOLLY AND THE IVY… by magda indigo

"The Holly and the Ivy" is a traditional British folk Christmas carol.

"The holly and the ivy, now are both well grown"

The Holly and the Ivy is thought to have Pagan origins and could therefore date back over 1000 years.

It is most unusual for a carol like the Holly and the Ivy to have survived over the years especially during the stern protestant period of the 17th century.

The Holly and the Ivy have always been taken indoors during the winter, the hope being that the occupants would survive difficult conditions just like the hardy Holly and the Ivy.

The colours of the Holly and Ivy, green and red are traditionally associated with Christmas.

It is now 7.30, still that special mood, little by little more people are appearing, mostly with dogs... and of course the odd photographer!

Raspberries, not only are they delicious but they rank near the top of all fruits for antioxidant strength!

Raspberry derives its name from raspise, "a sweet rose-colored wine" (mid-15th century), from the Anglo-Latin vinum raspeys, or from raspoie, meaning "thicket", of Germanic origin.

The name may have been influenced by its appearance as having a rough surface related to Old English rasp or "rough berry".

From my garden, a few days of lesser weather, the Roses suffered, I watched till I could no more and then brought them in... and here it is, one of them, the showy Just Joey, for our pleasure.

A very big fave! LOL

Few roses are as perfumed as 'Just Joey' a classic variety, with a fabulous scent and stunning depth of colour.

The salmon, coppery-orange flowers have pronounced red veining, with the whole bloom fading to a satisfying copper-buff with age.

For this reason, it was voted Rose of the World in 1994. It is also very disease-proof and undemanding.

The blooms make good cut flowers, but they are also stunning when plants are massed together prominently in a bed.

As a hybrid tea rose, it is best pruned from late winter to early spring.

The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit.
