You don’t normally talk about sex in China, so it was fun to see this gigantic installation at Art Basel Hong Kong recently.

Titled “Play - (201301)”, it is a gigantic gothic cathedral made completely out of leather fetish gear. The artist responsible is 没顶公司 MadeIn Company, a contemporary art creation company founded by Chinese artist 徐震 Xu Zhen.

Quite a showpiece. When I saw this a crowd of high school girls were giggling non-stop around the installation. This might be the first and last time they would have ever experienced this—perhaps no one really knew what they are looking at except me?

Avec le soutien de White Rabbit Contemporary Chinese Art Collection, Mr. Shen Qibin et Mr Lin Moru

Il s'agit du premier exercice physique culturel proposé par un artiste (Made In China).

L'exercice est composé de gestes et de positions dérivés de danses, rituels sacrés, mouvements politiques, sociaux et culturels (voir ci-après l'image reproduite sur le mur de gauche et décrivant les exercices)

L'artiste chinois Xu Zhen estime que le geste est la première manifestation de la pensée et que toute croyance s'incarne dans des rituels sacrés ou profanes dont il présente les gestes les plus significatifs regroupés par type dans un ensemble de vitrines.

Dans un espace spécifique, de la salle d'exposition, il propose, sur un panneau accroché au mur, dix exercices que les visiteurs peuvent faire eux-mêmes seuls ou en groupe et qui révèlent les aspects dérisoires des comportements humains stéréotypés.

Réalisé avec le soutien de la maison ZILLI, mécène officiel de la Biennale et grâce au soutien technique de TARVEL (réalisation du jardin de 33 m2, 70 m de chemins, 1600 plantes, 63 espèces)

Avec le soutien de White Rabbit Contemporary Chinese Art Collection, Mr. Shen Qibin et Mr Lin Moru

Ce jardin a été placé au centre du restaurant de la Biennale à la Sucrière, il représente un jardin zen miniature parcouru par de multiples chemins recouverts de petits cailloux blancs. Ces chemins ont des formes qui rappellent des trajets de manifestations et d'émeutes partout dans le monde. L'artiste a voulu montrer que sous l'harmonie apparente du monde évoquée par le jardin zen se cachent de la violence et des conflits auxquels personne ne peut échapper.

A group of high school students circled around a leather castle hanging from the ceiling. At first glance, it resembles something not dissimilar to that of a group of LV luggage bags. So they are all too busy taking photos with their cell phone. A boy was seen explaining what he sees to his female classmates.

There does not appear to be anything wrong with this scene, except that the castle was not made with ordinary leather — these are kinky leather sex toys. If the girls had known, they probably would have all screwed “Eww” and disappeared into Neverland.

Oh the joy of fine art — once elevated to a stage for excellence, no one even thought of the impossible. But it is. Demented? Yes, absolutely — which is precisely why I loved it.
